can't say's Tapu Fini

Born to counter most leads. He said it all. No status / hazard / phazing is going to happen and Nature's Madness crippling switch'in are pretty phenomenal things Tapu Fini does against Hippowdon.

Kanon90's Serperior

Serperior is an all around good lead, and its ability to prevent rocks with Taunt as well as provide offensive pressure/boosting potential against Hippo is pretty clutch. I would argue that Sash with Glare over Synthesis is the better set overall, but Kanon90's set works well as a dedicated Hippowdon counter.

Not sure who to vote for, Venusaur doesn't have Lech Seed and Serperior doesn't have Glare ... Hippo is very likely switching out vs both of these but neither of the nominated sets threaten common Hippo partners that are likely coming in, like Mence or Zard X/Y.

So I'm going with Klaklaka's Gyarados (with Ice Fang as the preferred slash). I really like Lum as it stops Yawn from annoying you, and Taunt stops Whirlwind etc to aid setup. It's still a bit iffy because Rocky Helmet and Rock Tomb screw with you, but I like it better than the other options.

I'd pick anything else if Yawn wasn't a thing, most likely Tapu Bulu. But Yawn is a thing, and it's super annoying. So I vote cant say's Tapu Fini. Nature's Madness also is good against all switch-ins.

cant say's Tapu Fini

This week has lots of good options, but Tapu Fini wins out because it doesn't have to worry about being put to sleep. Plus Nature's Madness is great to punish switch-ins.

Victim of the Week #36 - Tapu Bulu

Next up we have the last of the Land Spirit Pokemon, Tapu Bulu! While it doesn't get as much love as the other Guardian Deities, it's no slouch in battle! Tapu Bulu boasts an impressive 130 base Attack, coupled with Grassy Terrain and good coverage options. It can run a lot of items, such as AV, Z-Crystals, Choice Band/Scarf, Leftovers and pinch berries. Grassy Terrain not only boosts its Grass STAB, but also weakens Earthquake, providing great synergy with mons that are weak to Ground, like Heatran and Toxapex. So, how do you deal with this mon?

Submissions will be closed in 4 days from now. Good Luck!

Venusaur-Mega @ Venusaurite
Ability: Thick Fat
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Leech Seed
- Giga Drain
- Sludge Bomb
- Synthesis

Mega Venusaur's typing and natural bulk means that it doesn't give a shit about what Tapu Bulu could do.

252+ Atk Choice Band Tapu Bulu Wood Hammer vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Mega Venusaur in Grassy Terrain: 40-47 (21.3 - 25.1%) -- possible 5HKO after Grassy Terrain recovery
252+ Atk Choice Band Tapu Bulu Superpower vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Mega Venusaur: 35-42 (18.7 - 22.4%) -- possible 6HKO after Grassy Terrain recovery
+2 252+ Atk Tapu Bulu Continental Crush (180 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Mega Venusaur: 141-167 (75.4 - 89.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Grassy Terrain recovery

While taking absolutely zero from any of Tapu Bulu's moves (asside from +2 Continental Crush, but Mega Venusaur still lives and can heal with Synthesis), Sludge Bomb is a guaranteed OHKO on all non-AV sets.

0 SpA Mega Venusaur Sludge Bomb vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Tapu Bulu: 252-300 (142.3 - 169.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO
0 SpA Mega Venusaur Sludge Bomb vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Assault Vest Tapu Bulu: 168-204 (94.9 - 115.2%) -- 75% chance to OHKO

In addition, Mega Venusaur can deal with some of Tapu Bulu's most common partners, being Heatran and Toxapex. Versus Hetran, Mega Venusaur can stall it out with Leech Seed and Synthesis.

0 SpA Heatran Magma Storm vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Thick Fat Mega Venusaur: 62-74 (33.1 - 39.5%) -- 99.3% chance to 3HKO
252+ SpA Choice Specs Heatran Overheat vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Thick Fat Mega Venusaur: 156-186 (83.4 - 99.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

For Toxapex, Mega Venusaur is immune to Toxic, resists Scald, and can stall with Leech Seed and chip away with Giga Drain.

0 SpA Toxapex Scald vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Mega Venusaur: 12-15 (6.4 - 8%) -- possibly the worst move ever
0 SpA Mega Venusaur Giga Drain vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Toxapex: 37-45 (23.5 - 28.6%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Black Sludge recovery and Leech Seed damage

As a bonus, Mega Venusaur can also deal with non-Flyinium Z Celesteela, Chansey, and Alolan Muk, some other potential partners for Tapu Bulu.

The only thing listed so far that can resist any possible move thrown at it. The EV spread prevents a 252+ Choice Band from 2HKO'ing you most of the time with Wood Hammer, and Flash Cannon can kill 0/0 invested Bulus no problem.

Bulkier AssVest versions get neutered by King's Shield, and a Flash Cannon followed up by Shadow Sneak will usually take care of all but the bulkiest Bulu.

Celesteela @ Leftovers
Ability: Beast Boost
Level: 50
EVs: 244 HP / 44 Atk / 220 Def
Relaxed Nature
- Heavy Slam
- Flamethrower
- Leech Seed
- Protect

Okay if you ask why do I have 44 Attack EV's,
it is for OHKOing Tapu Lele:

44 Atk Celesteela Heavy Slam (120 BP) vs. 252 HP / 12 Def Tapu Lele: 180-212 (101.6 - 119.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252 HP and 12 Defense Tapu Lele lives Mega Blaziken's Flare Blitz and it is becoming increasingly common.

So what does that have to do with Tapu Bulu? Well, it basically OHKO's Tapu Bulu after Stealth Rock:

44 Atk Celesteela Heavy Slam (120 BP) vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Tapu Bulu: 128-152 (88.2 - 104.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock

Meanwhile:
252+ Atk Choice Band Tapu Bulu Superpower vs. 244 HP / 136+ Def Celesteela: 88-104 (43.3 - 51.2%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

Oh, if Tapu Bulu goes for crit and tries again, Heavy Slam will be overkill thanks to defense drops from Superpower.

So what does Tapu Bulu have left? Zen Headbutt? Stone Edge? Wood Hammer? pfft. Nature's Madness might be the brightest option but that means Tapu Bulu doesn't have Choice Band, meaning the chances it can even KO Celesteela becomes even lower. Taunt? Well, then this Steel thingy walls on the feet.

Swords Dance? Well,
+2 252+ Atk Tapu Bulu All-Out Pummeling (190 BP) vs. 244 HP / 220+ Def Celesteela: 172-203 (84.7 - 100%) -- 6.3% chance to OHKO

What a shame. This is not to mention Celesteela can predict this with Protect laugh at it.

tldr; STAB does 0 damage, coverages don't do much either, boosted Z-moves stand next to no chances. Meanwhile, Heavy Slam KO's back or at least significantly cripples it. Switch-ins are annoyed by Leech Seed and will have harder time against whatever the Pokemon Celesteela's team switches to.

basic spd mmence spread, can even switch in on it if it's already pre-mega'd:
252+ Atk Choice Band Tapu Bulu Stone Edge vs. 196 HP / 0 Def Salamence-Mega: 152-180 (77.9 - 92.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
also obviously switches on it with an intimidate while un-mega'd:
-1 252+ Atk Choice Band Tapu Bulu Stone Edge vs. 196 HP / 0 Def Salamence: 150-178 (76.9 - 91.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

from there it can roost spam since it can't actually one-shot bulu with unboosted and unev'd facade, but it's notable for actually Really Liking scald burns while bulu is paired with toxapex, one of the few circumstances where using tapu bulu is acceptable, and Not Minding A Lot when heatran's in its face as if you get a single +1 eq off, it's likely to one-shot

Edit: thank you cant say, this is one of the select few situations where grassy terrain actually helps tran tank earthquakes, this set doesn't love getting tox'd but at least you can just have some fun setup 5050s with toxic protect; fun

the only counterplay bulu actually has is swords dance+rock zmove, or if they have swords dance and crit a stone edge in the single turn of opportunity they have before you dd and can actually one-shot it with facade. hate lucky players

if i missed something obvious please forgive me it's like 12 am but im pretty sure bulu ain't use hp ice. or maybe i just haven't faced the right japan memer...

I hope this doesn't sound rude, even because i don't like to comment the nominations of other players, but since you wrote that gengar gets a free sweitch in, it is needed to point out that Bulu does this damage to Mega Gengar:
252+ Atk Tapu Bulu Wood Hammer vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Mega Gengar in Grassy Terrain: 102-120 (75.5 - 88.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Grassy Terrain recovery

fatal's Celesteela

As Solerme said, Celesteela is really the only thing you can switch in on any of Bulu's STAB/coverage moves. Gengar dies to CB Wood Hammer, Venu is 2HKO'd by CB Zen Headbutt, etc.

RNGIsFatal

Banned deucer.
Outsides Celesteela or incredibly bulky Steel-types, Tapu Bulu lacks reliable switch-ins.

This was a toss between Mega Venusaur and Mega Gengar; each one of them had one notable flaw when checking Tapu Bulu. Venusaur falls to CB Zen Headbutt while Mega Gengar cannot switch in at all.

Despite Mega Gengar not being able to switch in at all, I will vote Leader Wallace's Mega Gengar because it can at least trap and remove Tapu Bulu once and for all. It just keeps Tapu Bulu from wrecking more havocs. Stuff like Blaziken will obviously force out Tapu Bulu and I think this trait is what differentiates Mega Gengar from other candidates when it comes to countering Tapu Bulu.

I can't say I have the best metagame knowledge but yeah. This is what I think.
