[OVERVIEW]

  • Comfey is one of the most interesting sweepers in NU, thanks to its unique ability Triage granting it +3 priority in healing moves.
  • This in conjunction with Draining Kiss allows Comfey to revenge kill fast threats in NU such as Sneasel, Passimian, and Medicham.
  • Comfey also has a decent support movepool to go along with Triage.
  • Access to Taunt and a good speed stat allows Comfey to shut down defensive Pokémon.
  • Then it can use Calm Mind to boost its power and bulk, turning Comfey into a potentially dangerous sweeper.
  • However, Comfey has low physical bulk, meaning that it is susceptible to being revenge killed by strong physical threats like Toxicroak, Klingklang, and Incineroar.
  • It is also susceptible to all of the Poison and Steel-types in NU like Steelix, Klingklang, Vileplume, Garbodor, and Ferroseed.
  • Draining Kiss is resisted by most of the Fire, Poison, and Steel-types in NU such as Delphox, Steelix, and Golbat
  • Because of its middling Special Attack stat and Draining Kiss' low base power, Comfey absolutely needs to set up with Calm Mind to be threatening.

nature: Modest
evs: 236 HP / 252 SpA / 20 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

  • Draining Kiss is Comfey's main attacking move, not just for STAB and healing but Triage grants it +3 priority, allowing it to revenge kill frail offensive threats such as Medicham, Sneasel, and Passimian after +1.
  • Calm Mind gives a boost to its Special Attack and Special Defense, increasing both its power and longevity.
  • Taunt is essential to shut down defensive Pokémon such as Mega Audino and Slowbro.
  • It also allows Comfey to win Calm Mind wars against these Pokémon.
  • Synthesis is so Comfey has a more consistent form of recovery than Draining Kiss.
  • Keep in mind that it has low PP and only heals 1/4 of your health in Sand, which is very common in NU thanks to Gigalith's presence.
  • If that is an issue for you, then Giga Drain can be used instead of Synthesis alongside Life Orb.
  • Giga Drain isn't crippled by the weather and it does roughly 40% to Steelix on the switch.

Set Details
========
  • 252 Special Attack EVs and a Modest Nature give Comfey as much power as possible.
  • 20 Speed EVs are there to outspeed max speed Jolly Incineroar as well as speed tie with defensive Miltank.
  • The rest of the EVS are placed in HP to give Comfey as much bulk as possible without compromising its power.
  • Pixie Plate is the most reliable item to use, as it boosts Draining Kiss' power without any recoil from Life Orb.
  • Life Orb is another option to give Comfey more power without the need of setting up.
  • Fairium-Z is another option for the item on this set, making Comfey immune to Trick, less suseptable to Knock Off, and giving Comfey a decently powerful Twinkle Tackle to thwart would-be counters such as Toxicroak and Incineroar from switching in at +2 after Stealth Rocks.
  • Keep in mind that using a Z-Crystal comes with a high opportunity cost.

Usage Tips
========

  • Comfey can be used early and mid game to out prioritize any attack from would-be sweepers like Zangoose, Medicham, Sandslash, or Sneasel and revenge kill them with Draining Kiss.
  • Comfey finds it easy to set up on bulky Pokémon such as Slowbro or Miltank and against Pokémon that are likely to switch out against it, such as Altaria, Passimian, or Guzzlord.
  • Taunt should be used against any bulky Pokémon that carries a status move: paralysis and especially Toxic cut its sweep short.
  • Synthesis only has 8 PP, so use it conservatively.
  • Also, be cautious of using it against a Sand team, as it cuts Comfey's healing from 1/2 to 1/4 of its HP.
  • Draining Kiss also only has 16 PP, so be sure Comfey can actually sweep before using it.
  • Keep in mind that Draining Kiss is also a 50 BP move, so be sure that Comfey can actually revenge kill a foe before using it.
  • Calm Mind is essential to Comfey's sweep, but thanks to its Special Attack investment, it won't need too many of them to get the job done.
  • Even so, it's always best to calculate how many boosts you need to sweep your opponent.

Team Options
========

  • Like all sweepers, Comfey greatly appreciates residual damage provided by entry hazards.
  • Ferroseed, Steelix, and Garbodor make ideal partners as they are immune to Toxic and proceed to set up Stealth Rocks and Spikes.
  • Steel-type partners in particular that can switch into the Steel-type attacks aimed at Comfey also make good partners. Steelix in particular is a great choice for this as it can set up Stealth Rocks and threaten them in return with Earthquake.
  • Ground-types such as Steelix, Palossand, and Rhydon also make good teammates due to thier ability to threaten the Fire, Poison, and Steel-types roaming around NU.
  • Psychic-type partners like Medicham and Delphox are also good at keeping the Poison-type Pokémon that threaten Comfey like Toxicroak, Garbodor, and Vileplume at bay.
  • Fire-types like Incineroar, Houndoom, and Delphox also threaten the Steel-types of NU for Comfey with thier STABs or Nasty Plot.
  • Incineroar in particular is a great partner as it can weaken physical threats with Intimidate and Will-o-Wisp and provides a slow U-turn for Comfey to come in, and it in return appreciates Comfey's ability to threaten Fighting-types.
  • Wallbreakers such as Vanilluxe, Medicham, and Sneasel can break down the various walls Comfey has difficulty breaking, making its time sweeping much easier.

[SET]
name: Choice Specs
move 1: Draining Kiss
move 2: Giga Drain
move 3: Trick / Hidden Power Fire
move 4: U-turn
item: Choice Specs
ability: Triage
nature: Modest
evs: 236 HP / 252 SpA / 20 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

  • Draining Kiss is Comfey's main attacking move, allowing it to revenge kill frail offensive threats such as Medicham, Sneasel, and Passimian thanks to Triage.
  • Giga Drain is the second move of this set, threatening bulky Water-types, Rock-types, and even does up to 46% to Steelix should it come in.
  • Trick can cripple defensive Pokémon such as Slowbro, Miltank, or Palossand, allowing Comfey's teammates to have an easier time against these walls.
  • Hidden Power Fire is another option to nail Steel-types such as Steelix, Klinklang, and especially Ferroseed.
  • U-turn allows Comfey to escape from danger and is slow enough to pivot a teammate in safely.

Set Details
========
  • Choice Specs boosts Comfey's Special Attack by 50%, allowing it to act as a dangerous revenge killer without needing to boost with Calm Mind or the recoil from Life Orb.

Usage Tips
========

  • This Comfey is designed to be a wallbreaker that can be use early to mid game to revenge kill frail threats like Sneasel, Medicham, or Passimian without the need to set up.
  • However, Draining Kiss is a weak move so make sure Comfey can KO the foe before using it.
  • Choice Specs is going to lock Comfey into one move, so be cautious about what move you lock yourself into.
  • Giga Drain is a safe play if you are facing a Slowbro, Palossand, Diancie, Gigalith, or Steelix on the switch.
  • Use Trick if you are against a defensive Pokémon that cannot afford to be locked into one move or is crippled without its item like Miltank, Palossand, Ferroseed, or Golbat.
  • If Comfey predicts a switch that resists Draining Kiss or Giga Drain, it is generally safe to U-turn into a teammate that can easily take care of the threat that switches in.

Team Options
========

  • Like the Calm Mind set, Comfey appreciates partners that lay entry hazards to make its time wallbreaking easier. Ferroseed, Steelix, and Garbodor all can set up Stealth Rocks and Spikes for Comfey.
  • Pokémon that handle Comfey's Poison and Steel weakness such as Steelix, Delphox, Incineroar, and Medicham are great partners so it has a much easier time wallbreaking.
  • Ground-types or Rock-types like Gigalith, Diancie, and Rhydon are good partners since they keep Fire-type Pokémon at bay.
  • Since Comfey is very vulnerable to physical attackers, Pokémon like Slowbro, Incineroar, and Steelix can stomach physical hits aimed at Comfey and retaliate back with thier STABS or by inflicting status such as burns from Scald or Will-o-Wisp or Toxic, making Comfey's job much easier.
  • Since Comfey struggles a bit with special walls, wallbreakers like Sneasel, Medicham, and Passimian are great partners for it.'
  • Comfey's ability to revenge kill all of the Fighting, Dark, and Dragon-types in NU is appreciated by Pokémon like Slowbro, Heliolisk, and Mismagius.
  • Clerics and status absorbers are needed since this Comfey absolutely hates being afflicted with status. Mega Audino, Heal Bell Diancie, Miltank, and Blastoise make good partners.
  • Set up sweepers like Scrafty, Vivillon, and Calm Mind Delphox also appreciate Comfey's slow U-turn to come in and start setting up.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============
  • Hidden Power Ground is a appealing attack to deal with all the Fire, Poison, and Steel-type Pokémon that threaten Comfey. Similarly, Hidden Power Psychic can be used to threaten Vileplume and Golbat. However, Hidden Power is weak without a boost from Calm Mind and it also requires Comfey to sacrifice running Taunt, Synthesis, or Giga Drain.
  • Aromatherapy can be used to heal Comfey's partners of status, but the low PP of the move does not make it worth replacing Taunt.
  • A more defensive set utilizing Substitute and Leech Seed is an interesting option to gain residual health back, but it is not reliable and Leech Seed does not get the boost in priority from Triage.
  • Defog is another support option to clear all entry hazards away from the field.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Steel-type Pokémon**: Every Steel-type Pokémon is a threat to Comfey because they not only resist Draining Kiss, but can proceed to OHKO Comfey in return with thier STAB moves. Curse Steelix and Klinklang set up in its face and proceed to KO Comfey with Gear Grind, Gyro Ball, and Heavy Slam. Because Draining Kiss is a contact move, Comfey will be hurt by Ferroseed's Iron Barbs. Ferroseed also threatens Comfey with Gyro Ball.

**Poison-type Pokémon**: Poison-type Pokémon such as Garbodor, Vileplume, and Golbat all stomach a hit from Draining Kiss. Vileplume can then proceed to threaten Comfey with Sludge Bomb and Garbodor OHKO's Comfey with Gunk Shot. Toxicroak is the only Poison type threatened should Comfey set up. If Toxicroak comes in on Comfey, it is 2HKO'd by Draining Kiss and 1HKO'd by Twinkle Tackle after Stealth Rock. However, Comfey cannot setup on Toxicroak as Gunk Shot annihilates it.

**Strong Physical Attackers**: Because Comfey has poor Defense and low HP, most strong physical attackers threaten it. Pokémon like Klinklang, Steelix, and Incineroar can hit it hard with neutral hits before Comfey can even set up.

**Fire-type Pokémon**: Similar to Steel and Poison-type Pokémon, Fire-type Pokémon resist Draining Kiss and proceed to threaten it with strong STABS. Delphox is notable since it can cripple Pixie Plate Comfey with Trick. While Incineroar and Houndoom do not resist Draining Kiss, they too can fire back with very strong STABS and threaten to do massive damage with thier STABS. They do not appreciate coming in on a boosted Twinkle Tackle, however.

  • This in conjunction with Draining Kiss allows Comfey to revenge kill fast threats in NU such as Sneasel, Passimian, and Medicham.
  • Comfey also has a good movepool and stat distribution to go along with Triage. NGL its stats and movepool are pretty bad (only stab/grass attacks, I guess it has good support options though)
  • Access to Taunt and a good speed stat allows Comfey to shut down defensive Pokémon.

  • While it has an decent Special Attack stat, Draining Kiss' relatively low power means that Comfey absolutely needs to set up with Calm Mind to be threatening. Would call its special attack middling, or some less praising qualifier tbh; just note that a combination of low move power and middling spA mean that it needs to set up before it can do damage

  • Giga Drain lets you actually hurt lix, doing nearly 40% with LO to the standard Lix

Set Details

  • 252 Special Attack EVs and a Modest Nature give Comfey as much power as possible.
  • 20 Speed EVs are there to outspeed max speed Jolly Incineroar as well as speed tie with defensive Miltank.

Move this down, place less emphasis on it, Life Orb and Pixie Plate both are more reliable, and a Z-move has a fairly high opportunity cost atm.
  • Pixie Plate is a viable option to boost the power of Draining Kiss should your team already have a Z-move user.
  • Life Orb lets you hit hard without setting up, as well as letting you do good damage to Lix

Usage Tips
========

  • Comfey is best used late game when all of its checks are weakened and/or gone. Really? Triage Draining Kiss is an insanely useful revenge kiling move
  • Although ideal late game, Draining Kiss can also be used early game to out prioritize any attack from would-be sweepers like Zangoose, Medicham, or Sneasel and revenge kill them. Don't Emphasize the late game stuff as much, its really useful in mid game just to threaten out frail stuff.
  • Calm Mind is essential to Comfey's sweep, but thanks to its Special Attack investment, it won't need too many of them to get the job done.
  • Even so, it's always best to calculate how many boosts you need to sweep your opponent.
Overall, this section needs to emphasize that Comfey can, and should be used in the Mid Game, as the ability to revenge kill like half of all the frail stuff in the tier (Sandslash, Sneasel, Medicham, Pass, etc.) is just super useful, and the section currently seems to suggest that you should only use it in the super late game.

Team Options
========

  • Steelix in particular is a great choice for this as it can set up Stealth Rocks and threaten them in return with Earthquake. Combine this with the previous bullet.
  • Comfey's ability to handle Fighting, Dark, and Dragon-type Pokémon is also appreciated by bulky Pokémon like Palossand, Miltank, Slowbro, Guzzlord, Rhydon, Druddigon, and Drampa. Not 100% sure how I feel about this section.
  • There needs to be a bullet here about stuff that comes in on lix, as that is by far your most common counter. See Rotom, Slowbro, etc.
  • Wallbreakers such as Whimsicott, Medicham, Passimian, Clawitzer, Guzzlord, and Vikivolt can break down the various walls Comfey has difficulty breaking, making its time sweeping much easier. The Important thing for Comfey is the ability to wear down Steels, Fires and Poisons, most of these mons don't really do that.
  • Wallbreakers such as Vanilluxe, Medicham, and Sneasel can break down the various walls Comfey has difficulty breaking, making its time sweeping much easier.
Rewrite this section, seperate the different stuff more clearly, as its incredibly busy, and you can def make a few bullet points redundant. .

==============
Choice Specs should be a second set.
Draining Kiss
Giga Drain
Trick / HP Ground
U-turn
is something basic

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

  • Because of the prevalience of Sand, Giga Drain is an alternative to Synthesis as it has more PP, is not crippled by the weather, and gives Comfey an easier time against Steelix. Moved onto Main Set.
  • Hidden Power Ground is a appealing attack to deal with all the Fire, Poison, and Steel-type Pokémon that threaten Comfey. This should also mention HP psychic, which hits Poison types.
  • However, it also is weak without a boost from Calm Mind and it also requires Comfey to sacrifice running Taunt or Synthesis. Combine with Previous bullet.
  • Aromatherapy can be used to heal Comfey's partners of status, but the low PP of the move does not make it worth replacing Taunt.
  • Leech Seed is an interesting option to gain residual health back, but it is not reliable and does not get the boost in priority from Triage. Make sure to explicitely mention that this is in a sub-seed set, or at least mention a sub=seed set.
  • Defog

While Incineroar and Houndoom do not resist Draining Kiss, they too can fire back with very strong STABS and threaten to do massive damage with thier STABS. Implement this and tag me so I can give it another look over. Sorry to have to put so much work on your table, but Mon is fairly important in the tier atm.

It's okay, quziel. No worries about the work load. I've always wanted to contribute to Smogon and if a large workload is what I have to do, so be it. :)

Anyway, I've implemented the changes you suggested and am ready for another look-over.

Sorry, but there were concerns raised within the QC team about your metagame knowledge, and I'm afraid we will be reassigning this. I hate to do this, and I don't want you to take it personally, but we need to ensure our analyses are created by people who are experienced in NU, especially for such an important mon.

blast edit: to elaborate, you had to be explained in detail what both sets ran, meaning you simply don't have enough experience with Comfey to be trusted with its analysis. If you're still interested in analysis writing, I encourage to to use the resources in the NU forum to get a better grasp on the tier; you're more than welcome to try again once you feel you know the tier well.
