So I want to start trying Pokemon again but I have no idea what the metagame is like. Can anyone give me a quick description.

it's not really something you can describe since it keeps on changing all the time. Try lurking in the RMT section, might give you a taste for what alot of people are running these days!

Asking for a description is no good. It's really hard to describe something like this. Seriously, just throw together a team and start battling. You'll get a feel for it soon enough.
One piece of advice, though, go check out Shoddy Battle's usage statistics so you know what's being used. It has the most used Pokemon for October and November as well as the most common leads. Have fun ^_^ (Assuming you're playing on Shoddy Battle.)

I'd go do that regardless of what medium you're using to play the game. Check that, the RMT forum and just browse some of the discussions then throw some things together to try stuff. You'll get more complete answers that way.
