Clefable [QC 0/3]

Jabiru

formerly ThatCabbageGuy
[OVERVIEW]

  • Clefable looks to semi-stall its opponents by setting up and ignoring opposing setup through its ability Unaware before chipping down opponents. As such, it typically fairs best into bulky offense and loses to hyper offense and stall.
  • Whilst none of its stats are exemplary, its bulk is sufficient with setup to wall a wide variety of threats.
  • It has a great ability in unaware which allows it to ignore opposing setup so it is free to setup completely unopposed.
  • However Clefable does struggle against attackers which can hit it super effectively and against mons which can outstall it.

[SET]
name: Psychium Z
move 1: Reflect
move 2: Magic Coat
move 3: Moonlight
move 4: Charge Beam / Moonblast
item: Psychium Z
ability: Unaware
nature: Bold
evs: 248 HP / 152 Def / 108 SpD

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

  • Reflect: Z boosts def, shuts down physical attackers
  • Magic Coat: Z gives priority +2 to spd, niche usage in reflecting status (notably taunt or toxic)
  • Moonlight: Gives recovery, chosen over softboiled for compatability with Unaware. Notably also allows for increased sustain under sun, walling zardy
  • Charge Beam: allows Clefable to take down some Pokemon with sustain, notably winning matchups against magearna and slowbro however loses any ability to beat either ground-types or zeraora.
  • Monblast: allows for solid output of damage vs most targets

Set Details
========

  • The defensive ev's of hp and def are the minimum required investment to live a zardx flare blitz to set up z reflect and then heal. The remainder of the ev's are dumped into spd to give the best matchups vs various special threats. Additionally it results in Clefable having exactly one more point in Special Defense than in Defense preventing Download users such as Genesect from gaining a boost to Special Attack.
  • The ability unaware allows clefable to ignore setup which would otherwise beat it.
  • Depending on whether your opponent is a special attacker or a physical attacker, Pzychium Z allows you to use z-magic coat or z-reflect, respectively.

Usage Tips
========

  • In the vast majority of its matchups, Clefable should boost its defenses using the appropriate Z-Move, Z-Reflect if its foe is a physical attacker and Z-Magic Coat if they are a special attacker.
  • However some difficulty can arise when the foe has ambiguity in whether they are running a physical or a special set, or if they are . For the former scenario such as when the opponent has a Charizard, which could be a physical Mega Charizard X or a special Mega Charizard Y, or a Dragonite, which commonly uses both physical and special sets, a prediction has to be made depending on which set you consider to be most likely. Against mixed attackers, such as Mega Diancie you'll want to be boosting both defenses by using your Z-Move with Magic Coat and using reflect in its regular state, which of the two you use first depends mostly on which attack you're expecting to get hit with. However if unsure, it is usually better to use reflect first as Z-Magic Coat's priority makes it slightly better for setting up later on.

Team Options
========

  • Good teammates for Clefable are ones which can cover its weaknesses in poison and steel types. To this extent, ground types such as Zygarde and Donphan work really well, with Clefable covering their weakness into threats like Mega Charizard X or Primarina.
  • Other great options include pokemon which can cover its weakness to stall strategies such as Kew, Slowbro or Chansey, as the likes of Zeraora or Meloetta can whilst covering their weaknesses to the likes of Dragonite or Kommo-o

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

  • Clefable has a very wide movepool, which results in a lot of other options it can feasibly run. Notable options include counter which can be combined with unaware to help clefable threaten the strongest physical attackers in the tier such as Tapu Bulu and Victini, amnesia which can replace magic coat however it fails to provide so immediate an impact without priority and gives Clefable no options to play around taunt, and cosmic power whilst boosting both defenses helps against mixed attackers and frees up a move slot, Clefable doesn't have sufficient bulk to rely on +1 boosts. Power up punch can be used instead of charge beam on the main set so as to maintain the ability to hit ground types and Zeraora however it lacks sufficient potency to be able to break through things like Magearna and Slowbro.
  • The final consideration is in ability choice, running magic guard protects Clefable from the likes of leech seed and poison which would otherwise beat it. Additionally by not using a hidden ability, namely unaware, Clefable is able to run soft-boiled which has more pp and thus provides more recovery. Finally, in not using unaware, Clefable gains the option to lower its opponents stat stages with the moves charm and confide, whilst these are good options and allow for repeatable setup, there isn't the same level of versatility as provided by the Psychium Z set.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Super Effective Attackers**: Poison and Steel types, such as Naganadel, Mega Venusaur, Mega Metagross, Genesect can often OHKO or at worst 2HKO Clefable with their respective super effective STAB attacks.

**Nukes**: Some pokemon in the metagame such as Tapu Bulu, Victini and Archeops simply deal too much damage for Clefable to be able to reliably bulk and outsustain.

**Stall** Clefable struggles to take on pokemon such as Chansey or Type Null as they are able to outlast Clefable either in terms of sustain or pp.

Thanks for putting in some good work for this. As soon as you finish Checks and Counters, please put the analysis into bullet point format so QC can analyze it more easily, then you can change the title from wip to qc 0/3 ThatCabbageGuy

clears throat
Shyom's AMQC this ain't an official QC you can choose to add stuff or not
Bolded is additions, strikethrough is stuff that should be removed, underline needs to be edited in some way, red is comments. Copied from Alakazam (TDA)

  • It has a great ability in unaware which allows it to ignore opposing setup so it is free to setup completely unopposed ignoring.. add Pokemon that use setup to their advantage like Crustle and Shell Smash or Dragonite with DDance.
  • Add how Clef beats a majority of the "meta-defining" mons such as Mega Gyara, the Zards, and Dnite.
  • However Clefable does struggle against attackers which can hit it super effectively and against mons which can outstall it. Make this two bullets and add examples.

Format needs fixing, check other analyses like TDA's Incin analysis (link)
  • Reflect: Z boosts def, shuts down physical attackers such as?
  • Magic Coat: Magic Coat boosted with Psychium Z gives priority +2 to spd wording change maybe, niche usage in reflecting status (notably taunt or toxic) remove the parentheses.
  • Moonlight: Gives recovery, chosen over softboiled for compatability with Unaware. Notably also allows for increased sustain under sun, walling Mega Charizard Y
  • Charge Beam: allows Clefable to take down some Pokemon with sustain, notably winning matchups against magearna and slowbro however loses any ability to beat either ground-types or zeraora. I think putting Moonblast before Charge Beam is better. Beats GolPhan, LandoChomp, more stuff basically.
  • Monblast: allows for solid output of damage vs most targets Put this above Charge Beam

Overall, just format problems

Edits: Seismic Toss does actually seem kinda useless (well for me), and fixed the whole Moonlight + Sun interaction, it does indeed heal for more

Good AMQC, except that there's nothing wrong with his formatting. He's in bullet point and the markdown is accurate

edit: unless you meant, like, awkwardly worded sentences

Like move name capitalization or referring to typings (Ground-types) with the dash and everything unless those shouldn't be taken note of, also yes, awkwardly worded sentences.

Okay. That would be referred to as just bad grammar and spelling xd

check this out. Theres a lot of texting language in your analysis that will need to be removed sooner or later.

So this is my first part of my qc check. Implement this and tag me when you do, alongside any questions or objections you may have, and I will do a second part of my qc.
