Battle Spot Rotom-C

[SET]
name: In the Cut (Defensive Pivot)
move 1: Leaf Storm
move 2: Volt Switch
move 3: Will-O-Wisp
move 4: Thunderbolt / Thunder Wave
item: Sitrus Berry
ability: Levitate
nature: Modest
evs: 252 HP / 196 Def / 60 SpA

[SET COMMENTS]
Rotom-C is an excellent pivot with a unique set of resistances and coverage. Leaf Storm is Rotom-C's strongest move, hitting Pokemon like Tyranitar as well as Quagsire and Gastrodon particularly hard. Its access to Will-O-Wisp allows Rotom-C to cripple physically offensive threats like Mimikyu and Excadrill, while Volt Switch offers momentum against defensive switch-ins, as most Ground-types are too threatened by Leaf Storm to block Volt Switch. Thunder Wave is a secondary status option that can cripple Pokemon like Dragapult and Hydreigon that could otherwise switch in relatively freely. However, Thunderbolt lets Rotom-C hit the likes of Corviknight and Toxapex harder, and being able to use an Electric-type STAB move without being forced to switch out has some value, too.

When using Rotom-C, it is important to leverage its unique typing to its advantage. It is one of the best Rotom formes to face Mold Breaker Excadrill, as its Grass typing lets it be neutral to Mold Breaker Earthquake. In addition, Rotom-C excels in gaining momentum against defensive teams that include Corviknight, Quagsire, Rotom-W, Toxapex, and more. In fact, it checks just about every Water-type in the game—the spread above allows Rotom-C to have favorable rolls to KO Dynamax Gyarados with Thunderbolt after Stealth Rock and avoid the 2HKO from Max Airstream against Dynamax Gyarados most of the time. However, Rotom-C is very weak to opposing Dragon-types like Hydreigon and Dragapult, relying on a Thunder Wave on the switch to truly threaten them. For this reason, it enjoys partners such as Tyranitar, Corviknight, and Sylveon to cover its weaknesses. It also pairs well with sturdy Ice- and Fire-resistant Pokemon such as Toxapex and Milotic. However, as a niche Pokemon, it is obligatory to be keenly aware of when to bench Rotom-C against its common weaknesses to Dragapult, Galarian Darmanitan, and Hydreigon.

[SET]
name: Nasty Plot
move 1: Nasty Plot
move 2: Leaf Storm
move 3: Thunderbolt
move 4: Dark Pulse
item: Sitrus Berry / Lum Berry
ability: Levitate
nature: Timid
evs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

This set takes a more aggressive approach to Rotom-C. Rotom-C provides a unique set of resistances even as an offensive Pokemon, allowing it to use Nasty Plot and threaten the common Electric-type checks Gastrodon, Seismitoad, and Quagsire, often paired with Corviknight to create a strong defensive core. Leaf Storm and Thunderbolt are near-obligatory STAB moves for offense. Dark Pulse is a coverage move for Dragapult that also happens to turn into Max Darkness, a move that lowers the opposing Pokemon's Special Defense so its follow-up attacks hit harder. This is particularly notable, as Rotom-C is unable to benefit from the terrain boosts due to Levitate. Sitrus Berry is an option to set up Nasty Plot effectively, but Lum Berry can let it absorb status-inducing moves like Yawn while setting up against Pokemon like Hippowdon and Quagsire.

This is a more aggressive Rotom that is great at beating other defensive cores, which commonly bring Pokemon weak to Rotom-C such as Corviknight, Toxapex, Gastrodon, Quagsire, and more in combination with each other. However, its lack of defensive investment means that it is a poor option against common attackers. Rotom-C can be easily revenge killed by the likes of Hydreigon, Galarian Darmanitan, and Cinderace, which are all highly metagame-relevant threats. This type of Rotom-C is thus commonly paired with Mimikyu to check all those Pokemon, and it is also paired with Speed-boosting sweepers like Excadrill and Dragapult that can boost past all these fast attackers with a single turn. While these Pokemon with their high Speed are more likely to be walled by the likes of Corviknight and Quagsire, Rotom-C will be able to KO things from this matchup.

move 2: Thunderbolt
move 3: Volt Switch
move 4: Dark Pulse / Trick
item: Choice Specs / Choice Scarf
ability: Levitate
nature: Timid
evs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

Rotom-C is able to use its Electric-type STAB moves a lot more freely compared to its other Rotom formes, as it is actually capable of threatening the common Ground-types with Leaf Storm. This allows Choice item sets to use Volt Switch to pivot, deal chip damage, and yield favorable matchups. Leaf Storm and Thunderbolt are near-obligatory STAB moves that let Rotom-C break the common defensive cores that often employ Corviknight and Ground-types to check the other Rotom formes. Choice Specs can also use Dark Pulse for Dragapult, but Trick is an option that allows Rotom-C to switch up moves and cripple a wall, which is particularly relevant given Rotom-C has a lot of anti-stall properties.

Rotom-C loves strong attackers and sweepers that take advantage of Volt Switch. Rotom-C will reliably lure out and pivot out of the few Pokemon like Dragapult, Hydreigon, and Ferrothorn that resist both Electric and Grass, as very few Electric-immune Pokemon also resists Leaf Storm. For example, a Choice Scarf Darmanitan-G can be sent out after the Volt Switch against all of these Pokemon and threaten an immediate KO. Togekiss is also a strong partner for being able to set up on all three of those Pokemon.

Ive been using Rotom-C, this set in particular, on my main team and Ive been pleasantly surprised how useful its been, particularly vs Excadrill. While Excadrill takes liberties on every other Rotom forme, this one is able to reliably burn and chip it, making it setup fodder for things like Togekiss. Great writeup, Id QC stamp if i could!

While I do think Specs is actually pretty nice, I think we can save that for the full analysis. Otherwise, I think you covered the most common Rotom-C set pretty well, so QC Apporved 1/2!

I’ve been seeing a decent amount of - and really enjoy using - standard nasty plot. STABS + dark pulse is amazing at breaking common stall builds (pex + corv + quag + corsola). you can even run a combo of the two sets with plot + wisp + volt + storm. add some kind of NP set and i’ll do 2/2

this is updated - should i do an Overview / everything else that's done because this will be a full analysis or what?

Slight nitpick but I'd put Choice Specs Rotom-C as the first slash before Choice Scarf in the "choiced" set analysis, its a good bit more viable in my opinion. Hitting harder is more important than hitting hitting fast, as most the time it wants to serve as a slow pivot anyways, and it outspeeds basically every one of the major targets it wants to Leaf Storm anyways.

I know cant say said he was going to give this a QC 2/2 awhile back but I figure I'll just give this a quick look too even though I think there's not much to add at this point. A few comments are in bold, otherwise consider this QC 2/2.

Pretty good overall. Work on any repeat issues you notice when reading through this check in future analyses.
