Togedemaru is one of the best pivots NU has to offer. Between its Choice Scarf-boosted Speed and convenient defensive utility, Togedemaru can situationally switch into threats like Indeedee-F, Abomasnow, and Unfezant and threaten to revenge kill them. As a result, Togedemaru is very good at finding opportunities to generate momentum with U-turn as it forces slower foes out. Its last moveslot is rather flexible: Toxic is great to cripple walls like Cofagrigus, Lanturn, and Quagsire that it can't break past, while Nuzzle provides more team-oriented utility and punishes switch-ins such as Gourgeist-S and Silvally-Fire more effectively. Encore is also an option to disrupt setup Pokemon like Dubwool and Calm Mind Alcremie. Lightning Rod is the preferred ability because it helps Togedemaru switch into Rotom-S and Rotom-F more consistently, although Iron Barbs is justifiable on teams that already have an Electric-immune Pokemon.

Togedemaru's applicable to any build that isn't full stall by virtue of its combination of Speed and defensive merit; as a result, it will very rarely not meaningfully contribute to a match. Because it's not very strong, wallbreakers such as Abomasnow, Toxicroak, and Choice Band Sawk help to weaken or remove checks like Cofagrigus and Sandaconda; in return, Togedemaru can safely bring them in with U-turn and check Flying-types. Additionally, Togedemaru struggles to get by Ground- and Grass-types like Sandaconda, Galarian Stunfisk, and Ferroseed, so it benefits from having teammates like Silvally-Water and Silvally-Fire. Silvally-Water, as well as other options like Wishiwashi and Rotom-F, can also form a great VoltTurn core with Togedemaru.
