[SET COMMENTS]
A wide set of resistances and great defensive stats lets Ferrothorn serve as one of the best hazard setters in the metagame as well as a great defensive pivot. It has a generally positive match-up against Pokemon like Toxapex, Amoonguss, Hippowdon, allowing it to consistently find opportunities to set up hazards throughout the match. Its access to Spikes helps Ferrothorn find its way onto bulky offense and balanced team archetypes that benefit from the extra damage racked up throughout the match. Knock Off provides great utility for Ferrothorn's team, as it can remove items off of potent threats, especially including the Heavy Duty Boots that makes Pokemon like Dragapult and Rotom-Heat immune to its hazards. Body Press makes it tough for Excadrill, Urshifu-Single Strike and opposing Ferrothorn to switch-in freely. Leech Seed gives Ferrothorn a semi-reliable source of passive recovery, and combined with Body Press, lets Ferrothorn pressure Corviknight and Mandibuzz, who otherwise would be able to use Defog with little drawback. Gyro Ball can also be used as another source of consistent damage. Thunder Wave can be used to cripple offensive threats like Dragapult, Clefable and Hydreigon and generally make it harder for them to switch in comfortably.
However, Ferrothorn relies on Leftovers and Leech Seed to heal, which can sometimes be unreliable, especially since many Pokemon carry coverage moves in order to damage it, such as Zeraora's Close Combat, Toxtricity's Drain Punch and Clefable's Flamethrower. In addition, it's quad weakness to Fire-type attacks is a major design flaw in an otherwise well-built machine, so Pokemon like Rhyperior, Tyranitar and Hydreigon make for good partners. Knock Off is a threat to Ferrothorn's Leftovers, so Pokemon like Clefable and Toxapex can serve as effective teammates. They can also absorb Fighting- and Fire-type attacks, respectively, allowing them both to form an effective defensive core with Ferrothorn. Overall, however, the best partners for Ferrothorn are those that can take advantage of the unique set of utility options that it provides. Offensive threats like Sand Rush Excadrill and Rillaboom greatly appreciate the extra damage generated by a few layers of Spikes. High-powered offensive threats, like Kyurem, Dragapult, Urshifu-Rapid Strike and Volcarona are also great teammates for Ferrothorn. In addition, Ferrothorn fits well on Rain team thanks to its ability to check Electric-types, while the rain weakens the power of Fire-type attacks that would otherwise roast it.
