13 year old commits suicide thanks to fake Myspace account. Discuss

I think both parties are to blame. The Meiers for not educating their daughter about the dangers of the internet and obviously the Drews for their prank.
Actually, if you read the article fully, the Meiers DID try to teach her. They banned her from the conputer after creating fake MySpace accounts, and tried to moniter all of her online chat. The mom was quite suspicious of this fake Josh account and tried contacting the police, but they said that the information couldn't be released until a crime has actually been committed. I don't think they deserve that blame at all.

I'd agree 100% with you on that...except it is also noted that the parents still allowed Megan to even have a myspace account. Not that it is the direct cause (cyber-bullying can take place in other forms), but with all the slander that myspace gets, I make sure my younger siblings don't use myspace until I can be assured they are responsible enough.

I don't think the Drews were punished properly. It's sad that in this day in age, shunning and basically mob rule achieve punishment were legality and government did not. This will just get worse as we move into the future, because laws made 100 years ago start to fail when applied to the internet.

could this have been considered 3rd degree murder? it wasnt intentional, and they didn't really mean to make her kill herself. it could also be considered 2nd degree if you think about it.
i think the reason the drews were not properly punished is because of all the harrassment and damage caused to their family.

I don't think they should be charged for her death directly, but rather for the psychological pain they inflicted on her. Of course, I'm no law-talking-guy (Mr. Hutz, you mean the lawyer...).

They shouldn't be charged with anything.

The trouble with this so-called "psychological pain" is that different people react in different ways to things. Maybe another person would have just moved on with his life, rather than killing herself. Maybe somebody else would have killed herself after receiving a comment on myspace saying that she was ugly. It is preposterous that somebody should be liable for another person's responses to their nonthreatening, benign writing.

The girl had a choice whether to kill herself, and she chose to. Nobody tampered with her mental faculties in any way. She was not, for example, secretly given psychotropic medication. There was no crime here.

those fucking drews should be in jail this just disgusts me

EDIT:ColinJF,WTF?they are totally accountable and should be punished severly its not her fought she was already depressed and that shit pushed her over the edge

this pretty much sums up my views on this subject

I'm inclined to agree with Colin to the extent that nothing illegal happened. Making up a persona on the internet is not illegal. Telling someone they are worthless and they should kill themselves over the internet is, while viciously immoral, not illegal. The issue is more that parents shouldn't neglect the impact of the internet on their children. The girl was obviously in great distress, yet her mother apparently did nothing to try and soothe her. Unfortunately, people tend to favour censorship over education when it comes to things like the internet/videogames - this will just encourage more kids to be banned from the (mostly harmless) internet.

not by law maybe but screw the law they should go to jail just look at this from a moral point of view
Apparently you have a lot to learn about the justice system... For example, you can't go to prison without having been convicted of a crime. That's pretty basic.

That's why I specified that they shouldn't be directly charged with the death in any way. However, you cannot deny the fact that they intentionally put her in distress, intentionally antagonizing her. If a government tortures a man for a false accusation of terrorism, would they not be liable for the effects it had on the man?

i dunno if i believe that. this whole "emotional state." it seems like doctors claiming their patients are depressed all willy nilly. "youre fat and you have no friends? well, thats clearly not your fault, have some pills!"

Who the fuck kills themselves over someone they've never even met.

Seriously I missed the point someplace, the boat left and I was not on the boat.

This is just natural selection getting rid of people too stupid to belong on the planet.

Hence why I don't have a MySpace. People are too obsessed over it, and I was shocked when I went on a friend's to see how much drama I avoid. What a piece of shit site in general, and incidences like this happen more commonly than it's thought (although the parents usually don't conspire over it).

Yes, at first glance, this seems like a disgusting statement, but I'll have to back it.

The suicide of the girl was unfortunate, and I do want the people that tricked that girl to pay, but they legally did not do anything wrong. Lying is not a crime, and lying over the Internet is common. Granted, what they did was cruel, but they did not break the law.

Unless anyone can prove that they were trying to get the girl to commit suicide...

If anyone gives me the names of the people that did this, then maybe I can help teach them a lesson. (Yeah, I hope someone gets the joke)

I dont agree with the above statement (the quote by Trax). Those people got into this girls head, and played with her emotions. She fell in love with that fake boy, and love can make us all act like idiots.

Naturally she formed a close bond, and when her dream boy started acting like an asshole and told her to gtfo, she would be horribly distraught.

If you're dumb enough to kill yourself then...well...I am not exactly sure I have any reasons to tell you not too.

Its "life that can only get better" vs "go to hell"

I personally choose life...at least i will be able to get back at people if I am alive. AND, what kind of retard forges a "special relationship" with a guy they have never met, never seen, and has only spoken too with MySpace? MORON!

Also, I totally agree with TRAX's natural selection comment. We need to implement some kind of "required IQ" before a person can legally have a baby. Man would the world become a better place!

Killing yourself is usually influenced by depression, not stupidity in most cases. It is often a cry for help. There have been very intelligent people that have killed themselves.
