Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl - Release 19th Nov 2021

I've never seen a game's hype cycle so prominently show off non-dex mons like BDSP's, first with the Grand Underground and now this. I'm seriously wondering if they're just gonna say fuck it, pull a Renegade Platinum and let you catch nearly the entirety of the Gen 4 493 within the main game

Considering almost every game in recent times has let you use well over 300, if not 400 mons in-game ever since BW2, I would not be surprised at all if they let you use just about everything from Gens 1-4 on an in-game story playthrough of BDSP. It aligns well with recent games giving you a ton of Pokemon to use in-game as that has been the case a lot in modern times. BW2 had 300, XY had 450ish, ORAS had 200 but plenty of NatDex ones unlock before the post game adding a lot more in the process, SM has 300, USUM has around 400, and SwSh has 400 in the base game and another 200 or so in the DLC, nearing 600 usable mons in total.

So it would not surprise me in the least if they just go fuck it and let you get just about every Gen 1-4 mon available for an in-game playthrough. It would align with the massive variety newer games have been giving for in-game runs.

If you go to the eShop page via the Switch, it mentions that there is touch screen support at the bottom, though this isn't on the webpage so I can't get a screenshot. If I remember correctly SWSH had no touch screen support at all, so this is a nice option and is probably related to the poketch, but hopefully they let you use the touch screen for more things in general.

The mention of a Pokemon Nursery instead of Daycare on the Manaphy page implies that it's going to be the modern style with only breeding and no EXP per step. They also mention Ditto on that page, so that'll probably also be available via the underground or some point before Solaceon Town instead of postgame, as there wouldn't be a point in telling you it takes 10 hours to get to the nursery when you don't have access to Ditto.

EDIT: Also, the eShop page says that "The Mystery Gift menu option will appear in the X menu after you unlock the feature in the Pokémon Brilliant Diamond or Pokémon Shining Pearl game. (This occurs after about two hours of gameplay, though individual gameplay time may vary.)", confirming that Mystery Gift will be available from the ingame menu, similarly to LGPE and SWSH.

On a related note (hopefully, maybe the page still hasn't updated) if I wasn't already gonna get Brilliant Diamond cause of Dialga, I'd definitely get it for Rampardos. Despite being terrible competitively I still feel like it'd be good for a casual playthrough (especially with that attack stat) and it looks cool...compared to Bastiodon, who is terrible competitively, terrible casually, and looks awful for the most part.

We also got a reveal of some of the version exclusives.

Not having played DPP I can't really tell if there's differences going on here.
Not actually a reveal, incidentally, it was on the website after the trailer.

Interesting how they specify the mascots, fossils and stunky/glameow but not murkrow and misdreavus... Possible chance at being in both games now? That would b pretty epic
I wouldn't read too much into it other than just wanting to focus on a handful of exclusives rather than listing them all out.
Probably helps the 6 listed are all "unique" to sinnoh, in the sense they aren't attached to previous gen pokemon

What are you guys doing in terms of teambuilding for your BDSP in-game teams? I know for me, I'm really excited to try and replicate what I did for my in-game team when I was a kid. That consisted of Infernape (who I solo'd with because I didn't know how to train anyone else), Garchomp (I remember that I couldn't figure out how to get, but I got a level 100 one from a GTS trade after probably a year of searching/trying to find a good trade lol), Staraptor (who I didn't put on until post-game when I found a shiny one), and Gastrodon (West Sea). I'm saving the team variation for Legends Arceus, but I can't think of the last team members who would fit. That's partially because there are some new pokemon who weren't in the original DPPT shown and I'm just indecisive lol.

So, I guess this post is asking what methods are you using for teambuilding/who do you plan on using, and who do you think would be good fits for the last 2 slots I can't decide on?

For me the only Pokemon I know I'll have so far:

Torterra, Garchomp, and Floatzel. I hope they have more fire types to offer besides Houndoom or Magmortar cause I'll need something to counter that nasty Ice weakness that appears twice (three times if you count Freeze Dry lul)

It's worth noting that Murkrow/Misdreavus are the only Sinnoh dex exclusives remaining that weren't specified. The rest were postgame-only in DP

Now I'm curious how far they're willing to go with this. The Jigglypuff screenshot seems to imply postgame Trophy Garden mons being available before you beat the league, and if I'm correct on that then does that insinuate some of the non-Plat dex mons will be in the region itself too? Is there a chance at NPCs having these Pokemon? What happens to Poke Radar/Swarms/postgame locations like Stark Mountain? Questions, questions...

I mean my assumption has been just abotu every pokemon above ground will be available in the underground

That jigglypuff could have just been from the underground for all we know and they just decided to showcase it because they weren't double checking which one would actually be "normally" available (that is, Clefairy)

I don't plan my teams before playthroughs, but I'll probably do what you did and try my childhood Platinum team (never played DPPt) but that I might change up some stuff to be different.

My preliminary teams for each version! BD is on the top and SP is on the bottom. For BD I went with Sinnoh Pokemon that I've never used in-game before, and SP is my "classic" team that I used the first time I played through Platinum as a kid (underleved HM slave Bibarel included ofc). These might change as time goes on (particularly the BD one) but this is what I have so far :3

Anyone else find it really funny there's just a random ass Magmortar hanging out at the bottom of the Manaphy page?
There's a random pokemon at the bottom of (or "bottom") of most of the pages. There's a shinx at the bottom of the pre-order page, bidoof at the bottom of the quick ball page and garchomp at the bottom of the pokeball page.

Just seems like space filler ot make you see a pokemon and go "wow, a pokemon!"

I think it's just funny for me because of how goofy I think Magmortar is, so it sticks out more compared to a cute Pokemon like Shinx or Garchomp

I've heard Garchomp be called a lot of things. "Cute" was never one of them.

Not disagreeing with you since it's subjective. But yeah that's definitely a first lol.

Edit: I guess maybe you meant a cute Pokémon like Shinx and an iconic one like Garchomp without outright saying it. But upon first glance I interpreted otherwise.

Infernape is pretty much gonna be my starter of choice when I play BDSP. While I love all three of Sinnoh's starters to a fairly equal degree, Infernape is still my favorite of the three and it always has been and I am excited to use it again: perfect blend of being epic and badass while being an absolute beast in battle, nothing to lose in doing so. Call it basic but of course I will use Staraptor again because I have an innate psychological obligation to use the regional bird even if HMs don't exist (Corviknight was an immediate pick for my team when I played Shield), and Luxray will join my team as well. As for the remaining slots, I will probably use Budew and other mons like Gastrodon, Glaceon, and maybe stuff like Drapion depending on availability. Depending on EXP Share I may instead use around 9-12 team members that I rotate: so more than six Pokemon in a playthrough will be worth it. Glaceon, Roserade, Rampardos, Floatzel, Gastrodon, Hippowdon, Lucario, and Drapion are all fair game imo.

I will likely end up with a Fire-type starter theme for the entirely of Gen 8 lmao. I chose Scorbunny as my starter in Shield, I will pick Chimchar in Brilliant Diamond just as I did in OG Diamond, and for Legends: Arceus I plan to pick Cyndaquil as my starter because it's one of my favorite starters and my starter of choice in HGSS so that's an easy one. Fire-type starters FTW!

It's too early for me to plan my team for this game without knowing what all is available. I do plan my teams beforehand, but it's clearly not the original DP or Platinum dex so it's kind of guess work.

I do know I will choose Infernape though, on account of it being my favorite Pokémon ever and one of the best in-game starters ever. Though with Sinnoh's trio you really can't go wrong.

Well, my own tastes are very… some would say limited, but I think consistent is a better way of describing it. I just know what I want. I almost always play with some riff on this team.

It’s composed entirely of favorites and each member is meaningful to me personally and it’s also decently well-balanced with a good mix of power, speed, bulk, and coverage. And I believe all of them have been confirmed to be present in BDSP—except maybe Ninetales? But at any rate, if any one of them are unavailable or only available post-game, I’ll probably sub in either Cherrim or Roserade because nostalgia + grass coverage OR just play through with 4-5 members and let a new face surprise me.

So, I guess this post is asking what methods are you using for teambuilding/who do you plan on using, and who do you think would be good fits for the last 2 slots I can't decide on?
I think Roserade looks like a good fit here for one of those final slots. It’d give you Grass coverage and a way to hit Fairy types effectively. For the other slot, maybe Togekiss? You’d be a little ice weak but you do have Infernape. I think you already have a really offensively solid squad to begin with though so you should probably just pick a couple favorites or whatever looks interesting to you. (Or don’t plan the last two slots and just let them be filled naturally?)
