A staple of hyper offense teams, Orthworm's main role is to enable sweepers to safely enter and set up behind a Substitute. Orthworm looks to switch into walls such as Corviknight and Toxapex to safely use Shed Tail to bring in setup sweepers such as Dragonite and Polteageist and threaten to sweep the enemy team. Sitrus Berry is necessary to ensure that Orthworm remains above the 50% health threshold to use Shed Tail or to stay healthy after using it, while Regenerator provides longevity so that Orthworm can use Shed Tail repeatedly. A Relaxed nature paired with 3 IVs in speed allow Orthworm to be slower than Corviknight, letting it use Shed Tail after the latter used U-turn. With a high Defense stat, Orthworm can also serve as a decent IronPress user. Alternatively, Orthworm can also run Spikes or Stealth Rock to provide chip damage for its teammates. Metal Burst can surprise attackers who expect Orthworm to switch out. Orthworm partners with setup sweepers such as Dragonite or Talonflame, which benefit the most from a free Substitute. Due to its low Speed and Special Defense, Orthworm is threatened by common special attackers such as Gengar and Iron Moth, which prevent it from setting up Shed Tail. Orthworm appreciates fast teammates that check common special attackers such as Greninja that can outspeed and threaten them in return.
