NOC Smogon Mafia Mafia (Won by the Mafia)

neon isnt necessarily town so maybe this is actually correct. we have a 1/5 chance of hitting someone good which is sick + a 100% chance of getting neon out of the game (well ok maybe he has some bullshit but still)
Can you elaborate on what your beef is with ‘neon’. Is this just a revenge angle from a prior game or is there a more tangible reason to want him gone (I.e. does he have a history of trolling as village / throwing games?). I haven’t played in a while so any help catching up on player dynamics / metas would be appreciated.

I generally am of the opinion that a day 1 no vote is silly in NOCs, it’s just too conservative. Even if we misvote as long as there is good discussion and several alternatives under consideration then we can see who steered things where later on.

Opening read on pulsar is slight town because the stream of consciousness felt genuine to me and I think that it is less likely a mafia (or third party) would open with that vs. a townie. I dislike their proposed no vote strategy but I don’t think the suggestion was made out of malice / from a mafia perspective.

If people could post reads early and often that’d also be good, even if it’s just a soul read or a vibe check the whole point of day 1 is to see who is buddying with who and (more importantly) who is avoiding who. Even if we are wrong in some of our reads it’ll be a lot harder for mafia to hide their teammates in the ‘neutral’ reads bucket if we are proactively trying to sort.

Alright I’m out for most of the day but will try to make a post with updated reads when I’m off work. Please keep my thoughts above in mind because NOCs often end up being decided by Day 1 (not necessarily the vote outcome, but the player dynamics established during it).

For now vote Jalmont because the last time we played together he was a bit lazy so I think this is an optimal start of day kick in the pants. My vote will stay here until Jalmont posts reads on everyone who has made a meaningful post.

yeah i just had the idea hey maybe its all power roles based on flavour and that works w my role
I think we should keep role discussion to a minimum, at least early on. There’s very little point in the absence of any night results and all it does is help the mafia winnow down who to target.

Ooh it's 5 am but I love random insomnia.

To quickly address some things pulsar said:
-No lynch is almost never right on Day 1
-Yes the "1" is almost certainly a 3rd party with kill power and some protection (though I've designed some weird ass neutrals without kill power in the past)
-People almost certainly shouldn't claim until at least a couple days in.

Sam Neon is a bit young and prone to some amount of trolling/gamethrowing but honestly I've read these games it's no worse than the average deadfish inactive.

certainly - neon has some history of trolling (has been going since before i started so i don't know the full extent). he's also kinda just annoying. @ some pt it got to the point where he was temporarily banned from playing due to this
(neon being imaginaryneon if that isnt clear)
i think (correct me if im wrong) whatever faction he's been on has lost every game? could be wrong

all of this tracks. i dont think jalmont is really lazy last game he was hauling ass, and in general he seems on the more active side of things. but as good a player to kick in the pants as any other ig. totally agree w the post a lot of reads.

yeah i don't have the mafia experience (this is my 5th game or something) to say if hes awful or anything. frankly most of my problem with him is him being young i have a niece i can talk to if i want a 14 yo's existence in my life and im quite pleased with that much thank you.

if someone whos been around a little longer wants to give a more accurate rundown thatd be great. as far as i go uhh im newish and dont know shit lol

the main reason i was thinking no lynch is i remember some talk about that being correct early last game (a 9v2v2 where i was scum)

yeah i just had the idea hey maybe its all power roles based on flavour and that works w my role

Just gonna nip this in the bud real quick. Please don't crumb or claim what your role is if it's not going to materially add results information, or start a line of conversation that would do the same. This is something I'd normally consider towny behavior because it's something you'd do less often if you had a team helping but you did this exactly in your last scumgame so it's actually something that I'm taking note of.

right that makes sense, my understanding from last game was that it was bad because i was specifically claiming a powerful role (alignment cop), rather than the more general 'i am claiming a power role'

At least outside of specific low count MYLO scenarios, certainly not D1 is what I meant
ye i think my view of mafia is kinda skewed because the first game AG mentioned a possible line where no nk from the maf side was best & from there on i continually think about the null case probably way too much lol

There are degrees and levels, and beyond that psychology and WIFOM of whether crumbs and claims are a lie, but yeah doesn't really help to just give away info to the scumteams who start out with a lot more of it and can coordinate actions. You want them to waste disruptive actions and kill the wrong people etc.

Part of how we catch them in the late game is by getting them to claim results which aren't consistent with what we can prove to be true, which gets easier the more of our roles we hide from them for a few cycles. Especially if this is "older style" as IPL puts it.

Now Rostam, I don't think I've seen you around here before. Have you played Smogon Mafia? ORGs?

We've had NOC and OC running concurrently in the past, but OC (Outside Communication) mafia was a lot more popular. The Old OC style games were characterized by roles and mechanics being more important to solving and surviving. Flavor was important as well, and it was actually customary for mafia teams to write fake role PMs for themselves to try and fit into the town claims. There was a sort of evolution on this formula where some games would have aliases that were the targets of night actions and associated with users/items/locations, moles and other bastardizations that made claiming harder, that kind of thing.

I really really should sleep, I have a meeting in 4 hours. But wanting to doesn't make it so.

This is my first game of forum mafia but we played a lot of mafia/social deduction games in general in uni. Forum version is a bit of a different beast I imagine but mafia underestimate me at your own peril

Fair enough but even if he doesn't contribute much to solving if he has town equity he can still be a headache for mafia in the endgame.

Oh believe me, I'm not in the business of underestimating anyone! Welcome to Circus, lot of great people and creative games here, hope you enjoy it

Pulsar continues her metamorphosis into the town leader, which mainly began when she was checks notes scum. We’ll see how that goes but already the assumption Neon’s town could easily be a perspective slip, or I mean it’s a perspective slip regardless it’s just whether it comes from “Neon has only ever been troll town in his life he can do nothing else” or whether it’s because he’s not on pulsar’s team with her

Gonna say rn that some people are entering this game with pre-game reason to vote me out (I’ve just been surviving scum twice in a row, fairy and Blazade both found that to be very frustrating since fairy scum locked me early both times and went late herself and Blazade specced and deeply wanted me out). I wouldn’t say this after just one game, but after 2 in a row there’s an emotional reason to vote me out and I expect that to be impactful.

But we straight vibing anyway:boi:
