First one of these I've made in quite some time, actually. The tiers are organized by chronological order of games and are generally based on how fun each stage is and how well it goes with the games they're included in.

madison embodies everything that is the midwest and is the easiest S tier for that reason alone. decent urbanism in an otherwise mediocre city, severe alcoholism problem, more bars than grocery stores, unhealthy obsession with sports, the wisconsin accent, simultaneously too nice and too rude to everyone

Madison is the Midwest's version of LA. Let me know when you move here.

EDIT: actually I think this is a bad comparison. I do still think Madison sucks though.

piranha plant deserves f tier. the entire point of the character being in smash is that it dosent deserve it, and its funny.

id let ridley in d tier slide, because he is absolutely not a family friendly character, but you put bayo in c, so no.
you put the first mother rep in d, and the second mother rep in f? you do realise that earthbound was the inspiration for undertale, right.

this is a very exclusive club. If you even want to consider being up here, your game has to be on the mount rushmore of video games. Obviously, mario is first, and steve is at second, because it is arguably the most important game of the 21st century, and made a lot of money. speaking of money, pikachu is up third, because pokemon is the highest grossing video game franchise of all time. sonic single handedly destroyed nintendos monopoly over the video game industry, and donkey kong is THE arcade game.
A tier
if you are widely recognisable, or your game was pretty influential, you qualify for this. Link Ryu, Samus, and Simon just barely didnt make the cut for s tier, link because his series isnt particularly influential, and the other three because, while they were influential, they werent particularly iconic.
B tier
if you are above average iconic, you are here.
C tier
where the masses go
D tier
if you dont deserve to be in smash, and are taking up the spot of a character from a series thats iconic, new to smash, or influential, you are here.
E tier
you very much dont deserve smash
F tier
You really have to screw up to be here. there are only two fighters here. Piranha plant is f tier in a good way: the entire point of him being in smash is a joke. he is just some guy who dosent deserve smash, and thats what makes him great. On the other side of the scale, you have rob, who only technically qualifies as a video game character because he was in mario kart ds

There's an argument that said namesake is Symphony of the Night specifically since earlier Castlevania games generally had linear levels. Which would make the representative character Alucard or Richter, not Simon. Of course, Richter is ranked even lower.

Wanted to voice my opinions on a number of specific characters, if you guys were interested
  • Marth & Roy: At least for the purposes of Melee, these two are the entire reason Fire Emblem games started being localized in the first place, so that warrants higher ranks.
  • Every Brawl veteran: All of them with the exceptions of Toon Link and Wolf had story importance in said game’s adventure mode, provided some like Olimar had less than others preventing a higher placement
  • Legend of Zelda characters (especially Ganon): Overall they should be pretty high, but how inspired their movesets are can make rankings incredibly inconsistent
  • Melee clones (Pichu, YL, Dr. Mario, etc.): Aside from Roy and my extreme Pichu bias, these are probably some of the worst picks in the series overall. (Seriously, the only viable one in Melee is Falco anyways). Ultimate Pichu’s update history was so crazy that I unironically think that version specifically deserves a higher ranking than in Melee.
