If you're new to competitive battling, I think it's best to read up some info/lurk. Smogon and Serebii are both full of useful articles that you can read up and prepare yourself.

For example:

http://www.serebii.net/games/mechanics.shtml - this area has some stuff about the game mechanics (don't use its IV calculator though)

http://www.smogon.com/dp/articles/intro_comp_pokemon - this says it's an introduction to competitive battling so I assume that's what it's going to be doing

Anyways, just lurk lurk lurk and read read read. I didn't need any tutoring and I'm sure people like you can do that too.
