Really? I thought it was only confirmed you couldnt trick mega stones when one of the pokemon is mega evolved

Can you trick a mega stone onto a pokemon to block another pokemon on your opponent's team from mega evolving? For example, if I'm fighting a life orb gengar, could I carry a gengarite alakazam to trick gengarite onto the gengar, blocking my opponent's mega stone holding, unevolved lucario...
