[SET]
Nasty Plot Breaker
Hydrapple @ Heavy-Duty Boots /Dragonium Z
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 204 SpA / 52 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Nasty Plot
- Giga Drain/Leaf Storm
- Fickle Beam/ Draco Meteor
- Earth Power
[SET COMMENTS]
Hydrapple is able to use its solid bulk typing and special attack to be a breaker with great defensive utility. Regnerator allows it to switch in on resisted or neutral moves repeatedly and land powerful stab moves or set up on mons like Ogerpon-Wellspring and Urshifu-Rapid Strike. Leaf Storm and Draco Meteor offer immediate power whereas Giga Drain and Fickle Beam allow for more versatility, as the special attack drops from the former two attacks means switching between moves or using coverage is less practical. Fickle Beam can also be used to break past would be checks like Blissey through sheer luck due to its chance to deal double damage. Earth Power allows you to majorly chip steel types like Gholdengo or Kingambit 52 52-speed EVs allow you to outspeed uninvested Kingambit and Mawile while keeping an offensive presence. Dragonium Z alongside Draco Meteor allows you to threaten OHKO’s on what might be able to threaten it otherwise, such as Landorus-Therian or a 75% chance on Mega Charizard Y. Heavy Duty Boots, on the other hand, allows it to more easily use its ability to switch in repeatedly. More bulky teams would prefer Heavy Duty Boots to let it switch in more times and threaten its strong special attacks throughout a long game, whereas frailer, more offensive teams would rather have the more explosive power of Devastating Drake or Bloom Doom
Hydrapples natural tendency towards heavy duty boots and its combination of defensive and offensive utility make it well suited towards bulky hazard stack. There it’s STAB combination is able to threaten much of removal, forcing Moltres and Zapdos to use a Roost gifting free turns. It can also threaten both Great Tusk and Iron Treads with Giga Drain and Earth Power. Additionally it is difficult for non attack booster Great Tusks to switch in on even on Nasty Plot or as the Hydrapple is switched in as Ice Spinner cannot KO Hydrapple from full health. Both its Z sets and Heavy Duty Boots sets can work, depending on how offensive the team is.Hazard setters like Mega Tyranitar,Gliscor, and Heatran enjoy no longer fear giving Ogerpon Wellspring or Urshifu rapid strike an entry point as Hydrapple switches in on most sets and can set up a nasty plot on their STAB. Mega Tyranitar and Heatran also enjoy Hydrapple switching in on Landorus -T and threatening with its STAB. Despite Hydrapple’s high bulk often allowing it to stay in on pokemon with Super Effective coverage like Great Tusk, it is generally threatened by pokemon who can threaten it with their STAB such as Weavile,Garchomp,Tapu Lele, and Iron Valiant. Because of this Hydrapple naturally partners extremely well with Steel type partners that can fit on hazard stack, such as Mega Scizor,Ferrothorn, or Gholdengo. The former two are able to use knock off making Hydrapples repeated entry points and attacks more threatening by forcing hazard damage each time. Gholdengo also helps in that regard by denying removal with its Ghost typing and ability Good As Gold denying most relevant removal.
