Hello everyone, and welcome to RBY Grand Slam IV! RBY Grand Slam is a five-Open into Playoffs tournament to decide the strongest RBY Lower Tier player of the year! Previous editions and winners can be found below.

This year's format consists of five separate tournaments: The RBY Ubers Open IV, The RBY UU Open IV, The RBY NU Open IV, The RBY PU Open III, and the RBY ZU Open I. Players will be awarded points for their performance in each Open; the point system can be found here. After the conclusion of all Opens, the top eight players will advance to playoffs: a single elimination, best-of-five series to determine the champion of RBY Grand Slam IV.

Signups for each Open will be posted after the second round of the previous open. The signup dates are as follows:
Please note the Opens have changed order to better accommodate other concurrent tournaments and reduce burnout.

In addition, all Opens will award points towards RBY Lower Tiers Circuit III!

Replays will be required for all matches. If a tier shift occurs during a round, it will not be taken into account until the following round.

Be sure to join the RBY Discord to discuss and spectate the tournament!

This is not the signup thread. Signups for each tournament will be posted in new threads on the dates above. Sign up to play in those. Do not post "in" here.

Although it did not matter, I do think that for next year RBY grand slam it is worth considering following similar drop rules as the normal grand slam, where playoffs is locked at the start of playoffs and not at the start of the open (since this is the status quo). Players are currently playing almost 2 month old tours, that do not exist anymore. Except if there is a good reason for keeping such strong tier locks, which I am unaware of. I understand that old gen lower tiers communities are smaller and change less compared to newer gens, but when you allow tier drops you have to accept that tier changes can happen mid tour and players of these tiers should be able to adapt accordingly.

But that is just my two cents, since as a tournament main I got very confused about the current rules.

I don't agree, these tiers don't change as rapidly as current gen and I think you should play the playoffs in the same tier that you played not that long ago

It is possible that for some of the tiers there will have been literally zero tournaments since the tier shift. If this is the case and we don’t lock the tour for playoffs, then literally your first tournament game of the metagame will be a bo1 game in the playoffs of one of the two biggest LT tournaments of the year, essentially giving you no time to adjust. Therefore I think it is good that the tiers are locked throughout the entire tour.

The tiers played in playoffs are the tiers that the players signed up to play and the tiers that they demonstrated their skills in. It makes significantly more sense from a competitive standpoint for the players to play the tiers that which they've already played and demonstrated expertise in than to just wing it in a tier that has had virtually no play or development. Adapting to a new meta is a skill, sure, but then we would be neglecting the skills the players actually used to get into the playoffs. What is probably the most prestigious multi-tier RBY individual tournament is not the place for two players to fumble their ways through a new tier in real time. I imagine most people would rather watch (and play as) two players trying to innovate and outwit each other in a meta they both know than see who happened to get a better read on the early meta and made fewer line errors.
