Smogon Champions League is a team-based tournament where 10 team managers draft their team from a pool of players and duke it out in 8 current generation metagames for nine weeks to make it to playoffs, where the top four teams face off to determine the winning team and to claim the green trophy.

SCL V Hosting TeamVertigo, goldmason, Nashrock, Princess Autumn, Ticken, UT

A reminder of rulings that hold true for this edition, and some new ones:
  1. Managers are allowed up to two (2) assistant Manager.
  2. Teams are only allowed three (3) retained players from last year's SCL.
  3. Retention rights may not be traded.
  4. Players may not be traded at any point.
  5. Midseason signups are restricted to people that signed up for the original auction.
  6. The minimum number of players in a team is 14.
  7. The maximum number of players in a team is 20.
  8. There will be a severe penalty for any team that picks up a known alt of a banned player, or any player masquerading as another person to lower their cost in the auction. This has not been a big issue in the past, but it is important to establish that both parties will be penalized immediately and harshly if they are found doing so.

Player sign-ups will go up at the same time as or shortly after this commencement thread is made. When a prospective player signs up, they are expected to also note which tiers they are interested in playing during the tournament. In order to ensure the best possible experience for yourself, the managers, and your team, please do NOT sign up for any tier you are unwilling to play. If you would not seriously consider playing that tier in a tournament environment, do not list it. The tiers you put down in your signup are binding for almost the entire tournament, but they will also affect how your prospective manager sees you, and as such they should be as accurate to your skillset as possible. Don't make dumb joke posts about playing tiers you do not care for.

Retain rules:

As stated above, only three retains per team are allowed this year. You may not retain more than three, though you may retain less or no players at all if you wish.

The cost to retain a player on their first year as a retention will be the HIGHER of the following two scenarios (unchanged from last year):
  1. the amount that the player went for in the last auction + 3k (ex. if Aeolus was bought for 13k, it would cost 16k to retain him)
  2. 10k, if the previous price + 3k would end up being lower than 10k (ex. if Jackal was bought for 6k, his retaining cost would be 10k, not 9k)
Remember that a player bought for under 10k during last year's auction will not necessarily cost just 10k to retain. If Aldaron was bought for 9k in last year's auction, he would cost 12k to retain this year, not 10k.

The cost to retain a player that was already retained in the last SCL will be dependent on how many times they have been retained. The fee being raised by +3k with each subsequent retention (ex. if Hogg was retained for 16k last SCL , it would cost 22k to retain him in this one, and 31k to retain him in the next one).

The tier lineup this year is as follows:
  • SV OU
  • SV OU
  • SV OU
  • SV Ubers
  • SV DOU
  • SV UU
  • SV RU
  • SV NU
  • SV PU
  • SV LC
Tournaments Rules and General Guidelines

General SCL Rules & Regulations

The General Manager of a team is essentially the boss of a team. The GM is the final word in all decisions (barring the hosts) regarding his team. The GM decides which players play on the team, who plays in what position, and even handles the team finances. Managers also make sure that the team keeps running on a day to day basis. If a team fails to complete their matches by the end of the allotted time, the onus is on the manager to inform the hosts as to what happened in order to make sure that proper activity calls are made.

Because of these responsibilities, The General Manager is probably the most important part of the team. As such, the position of GM is not one to be taken lightly.

  • General Managers are not eligible to play in the Smogon Champions League. You can either play or manage, not both.
  • General Managers are chosen largely on a subjective opinion of the Tournament Directors as to who they believe would be fit for the position. Being fit for the position includes the knowledge of excellent battlers in the community (for fielding a competent team), having above average activity on the forums, Pokémon Showdown and/or Discord (in order to ensure that you don’t abandon your team), as well as possessing a necessary amount of “gravitas” (If you can’t make a player do what you tell them to, such as play an undesirable metagame, you’re not going to make a good manager).

General Managers are required to acquire two Assistant Managers. The Tournament Director team can veto the selection of an assistant manager, but will not require the General Manager to choose any particular user as their Assistant Manager. The assistant managers are essentially the second in commands for the team. They have almost all of the functions and roles as the General Manager does, the GM just trumps them in head-to-head decisions.

Lastly, the General Manager has the following duties:
  • They shall choose two Assistant Managers.
  • They shall make the hosts aware of any player retentions by the time player signups close (48 hours prior to the start of the auction).
  • They shall be present at the live auction, or appoint someone (preferably either Assistant Managers or a retained player if both AMs are unavailable) to participate in the live auction in their stead.
  • They shall send the hosts weekly lineups.
  • They shall ensure to the best of their abilities that their battlers complete their matches on time.
  • In the event that a match fails to be completed, they shall inform the hosts as to why the match failed to be completed, and what his/her battler did in order to finish the match.
  • They shall communicate any grievances with the hosts.
All players must sign up if they wish to play in the Smogon Champions League, even those who will eventually be retained to their past teams. It is important to note that the Smogon Champions League is an 11 week event and that the activity level of a player is significant. Do not sign up to play for a team if you do not intend to see the tournament through to the end. This includes maintaining a competitive attitude if your team is already eliminated from playoff contention. You never know whether or not winning your end-season matches will make you a more valued player next season, so even if your team isn’t necessarily in the playoff picture anymore, there’s always value in playing your best. Failure to complete matches in a timely manner consistently may result in being barred from entering the Smogon Champions League in future seasons.

For the duration of SCL's regular season, players are not allowed to play in the tiers listed as "NOT played" in their signups post. They will only be allowed to play those tiers starting in playoffs. A tiebreak to determine which teams will qualify for playoffs will be considered part of the Playoff rounds for this rule. We will be enforcing this rule for ALL players, regardless of price tag.

Players that are retained will be locked into the same tiers that they were locked in the year prior. Players retained for a second year in a row will not be locked and can play any tier.

The sign-up list will then be taken and sorted into appropriate lists for each of the 8 metagames. These lists will then be used by managers for the auction.
Total money for teams is 140,000 credits. There will be no holdover on extra credits from previous years - everyone starts with a blank slate and 140k.

In the weeks preceding the live auction, a time will be chosen by all of the General Managers to meet and perform a live auction in order to choose players. Managers will be expected to remain at the auction for the entire duration, which should take approximately 2-3 hours. If a General Manager cannot, for some reason, find any feasible time that he can attend a Live Auction, then the Assistant Managers will be called upon to fill in the spot. If no Manager can fill the spot for the Live Auction… then a new General Manager + Assistant Managers who can find time to make a live auction will be found to replace the old ones.

Once a time is set, all 10 managers + the hosts will enter the place where the auction will be held - likely the Smogtours server. Spectators are allowed to join in to watch the fun unfold, but will not be able to speak. Discussion on the bidding at hand should be relegated to the SCL chatroom or any other appropriate chat outlet.

The hosts will first ask a team to nominate a player. The order by which teams will nominate players will go in a snaking pattern from the highest ranked team from last year to the lowest ranked team, then the lowest ranked team to the highest ranked team. The hosts will then tell the details of said player and bidding will commence, starting at 3000 credits, with the nominating team automatically placing the first bid. The auction will then be in real time. Managers will simply put in their bids in the chat, raising a minimum of 500 credits. If after 15 seconds there are no new bids, the player is sold to the highest bid in the channel. The hosts or utilized bot will provide a 5 second warning before bidding is closed on a player. The updated credit totals will then be posted and then the next manager in the rotation will be prompted to nominate a player.

Managers are advised that placed bids are final, and we will generally not permit an undo in the case of a mistake. Exceptions can be made in cases where a team nominates an incorrect player or if a typo in a bid amount would threaten the integrity of the team as a whole. Please make sure to double check your bids before sending them!

Managers are asked to please have a predetermined list of players you intend to nominate as well as potential bid caps, in order to make the process go as quickly and seamlessly as possible.

Managers: it is necessary for you to field a roster of 12 starters and a minimum of 2 substitutes, with a maximum of 12 substitutes being allowed of which all must be paid at least 3000 credits. This creates a soft cap of 101,000 credits on any particular bid - that is, the maximum amount of money you can spend on any one player and still have enough money left over to pay at least 3000 credits a piece on 13 more players.

Remember that there are midseason free agent pick-ups. It may be beneficial to save some credits in order to pick up players midseason, but remember that no new players will be allowed to sign up for the midseason draft.
It is at this time that the tournament will commence. The league stages consist of a Round Robin tournament. Every team will face every other team once through 9 weeks of play. Each manager will submit to the hosts a roster no later than the deadline of the previous week. This roster will list the starting players and what metagames they will play.

When the week starts, teams' players will face off in their respective metagames / tiers. The SV OU 1 from Team A will face the SV OU 1 from team B, SV OU 2 will face SV OU 2, and so on. Whichever team wins the most battles will be declared the victor for the week. Rather than score based on how many individual battles a team wins, the primary thing that matters is who beat the most teams. As such, points are awarded based only on wins and losses versus teams as a whole, not individual players. Beating a team in a week’s matchups is worth two points, tying with a team is worth one point, and losing is worth none, simple as that. At the end of the round robin, the top four teams in the points proceed to the playoffs and will be seeded into a knock-out style bracket where they will face off until only one team remains.

There are a few regulatory things during the league stages that need to be outlined.

  1. Substitutes – At any point in time during the week, a team may make a substitution for a currently slotted player. In order to do this a manager must post in the thread, tagging the hosts, the opposing managers and the opposing player stating which player is substituting out, and which player is substituting in. A player that has substituted out for a week cannot be substituted back in. In addition, all substitutions are subject to veto by the hosts if the substitution is suspected to be attempting to “game” the system. Substituting in a player who is unavailable to play at any of the times the opposing team has previously offered in order to force a double substitution is not permitted and the player who was substituted in will be required to be substituted out.
  2. There will be no trades allowed at any point during SCL.
  3. Activity decisions – There are inevitably times where two players simply fail to complete a match; however, the nature of the tournament system sometimes makes it advantageous to purposely fail to play (such as when a team is up 6-5 in a week). Because of this, it is necessary to make activity decisions on matches. Hosts are required to make thorough investigations regarding each and every potential failed match during a week. If both parties are deemed to be equally apathetic or enthusiastic about getting the match done, but just have not had the opportunity to make it happen, the match will result in a no contest. However, if it is deemed that one party made significantly more effort than the other in attempting to get the match done, then a win will be awarded to that player. Things that will make it very likely that you will lose via activity include: failing to VM your opponent immediately upon the week’s start, scheduling a match and being documented as missing the match time, failing to provide any concrete times for which you can be reached, failing to respond to an opponent’s VM at all. Please be certain to review the guidelines for a favorable judgement in an activity decision. Note that this is a tournament that requires a very high level of activity and diligence, if you don’t think you can get your matches done, quite simply don’t sign up.
  4. Rule Breaking – There is no excuse for breaking any of the predetermined rules. If you are caught breaking a rule, you will lose your match. There is no lenience with regards to this. Break a rule, you lose. Period.
  5. Reversing Rulings - No ruling will be retroactively overturned once the week following the week that the ruling has been made has ended. This includes: activity rulings / rulings based on rule breaking / anything else under the sun. I'm not going back in time to reevaluate every single decision I've made throughout the tournament on Week 9 because you think you were robbed 1-2 wins along the way and now they're the difference between you and a playoff spot. Any appeals to a ruling must be made during the week that the ruling is made; beyond that, all rulings are final once the week ends.
  6. Recreations – Under some circumstances, generally due to a true disconnection, the host team may determine that a game must be recreated. Ideally, this recreation will take place immediately, but if the completion of the game needs to be rescheduled then a host or tournament director will recreate the game with the same players at a later time. Neither player may be substituted out for the recreation, but otherwise standard rules for activity decisions will apply.
  7. Changes to Tiers - Standard practice is that any changes to a tier that happen after a week is posted, e.g. suspect test or council bans, new Pokemon releases, or standard tiering shifts, will not go into effect until the following week. Any exceptions to this will be announced by the host in the administrative decisions thread.
Sellbacks
Up until week 4 managers will have the opportunity to report players that they believe are not meeting minimum activity requirements and/or sabotaging their team to the hosts. The hosts will review the team situation on the first 2 days of Week 5, and if it is found that the player in question is indeed guilty of one or both, the team will be allowed to sell them back. Reports made on team quitters after the end of Week 4 will not be evaluated until the conclusion of the tournament, with the exception of cases of cheating or team leaking/sabotage. Players who are banned from the Smogon Forums for a duration longer than the rest of the tournament and players who are banned from tournaments for actions unrelated to Smogon Champions League will also be eligible for a sellback.

If a player is sold back, their team obtains 3k of their value as credits to be used in the midseason auction. The only exception to this is players who become eligible for sellback prior to when Week 1 is posted.

Teams who sell back players before the start of Week 1 will be reimbursed with credits equal to 1.5k+half of that player's retention cost or value in the auction. These credits may be used prior to the start of Week 1 on undrafted players who signed up, and players selected will be eligible to play starting in Week 1. Any of these credits that remain unused will be converted into sellback credits for use in the midseason auction.

Midseason Draft
During Week 4, sign-ups will reopen for 4 days. Players that signed up for the original auction and weren't drafted will sign up and a new free agent list will be made. Note: Even if you signed up the first time around, you must re-signup in order to get on the midseason free agent list. Players will not be able to change their 'Tiers NOT Played' in midseason. Whatever was on the original signup remains in effect. After sign-ups close, the host will remind each manager how many credits they have left over from the original live auction.

Instead of having another live auction, an auction will take place on the forums. A manager will post their bids, with other managers having up to 12 hours from the time of the post to make a higher bid on the player. After 12 hours, if the manager has not been outbid, his or her team will be awarded the players. The Midseason auction will last for 5 days during week 5. The players purchased here will be allowed to start playing starting on Week 6. There is no use for credits leftover after the midseason free agent pickups, so it is in every manager’s best interest to spend all of their remaining credits at this time. No players may enter SCL after the midseason auction, except in the case of a team falling below the minimum number of starters due to their players being banned, in which case they'll be allowed to pick players from the undrafted pool until they reach the minimum.
At the end of the league stages, there will be a knockout style playoffs involving the top 4 teams in the points. In the event of a tie in overall points standings, the following criteria is used for breaking ties.
  • Overall Points >
  • Battle Difference (total # battles won - total # battles lost) >
  • Best of 3 - each team picks a unique tier with the winner of the Head to Head matchup during the regular season picking second, and SV OU being the 3rd game. In the event that the two teams tied in the Head to Head matchup, the team with better results against the higher seeds will pick second.
  • Note: a Best of 3 series shall only be used to determine whether or not a team will qualify for playoffs. To just determine seeding among the top 4 teams, the result of the Head to Head matchup during regular season shall be used as the third tiebreak, with a B03 series being offered as a final alternative if teams are tied in every other element.
After the top 4 have been determined, each team will be seeded. The #1 seed will play the #4 seed, and the #2 seed will play the #3 seed. Teams will battle in the same format as during the league stage. At the end of all 10 battles, the team with more wins will advance to finals.

In the case of a tie in playoffs, the advancing team will be decided by a best of three - each team picks a unique tier with the higher seed picking second, then SV OU is the 3rd game.
The tournament will progress in this format until there is only one team left standing, the champion of the Smogon Champions League.

I've been around the communities of Grand Slam tiers so I have some recommendations for managers.

I think that these LC players should always start should they sign up:

Lokifan - Lokifan had the best record last year, and had poor availability in LCPL but recently has won some difficult games and is imo the most reliable pilot. At least 10k, I would feel safest pairing with cheap support because while effective Lokifan can sometimes overcook a team

Tazz - Tazz pretty much always goes even or better and is one of the most experienced LC players. Tazz's only weakness is his bad luck, so I think he is usually better than his records. Tazz is capable on his own or with support. Probably gets retained, but if not probably 15k depending on the LC economy imo.

Starsama - Starsama was great last year and has been great since. I have never teamed with Starsama but by all accounts I know of he is a good teammate. Around/above 10k, seems self sufficient but all managers should talk to him.

Laroxyl - Don't let the 5-5 record in the currently ongoing LCPL fool you, he is on a heater right now and in amazing form after his mid season turnaround. He has played in multiple SCLs and has always been competitive in the pool. He is good in multiple tiers, but his LC value is around 10k to me. Talk to him to find the best support picks to draft, though he does build well.

Eniigma - Eniigma went inexplicably undrafted last year after going positive the year before and farming individual tournaments. This year, his LCPL was very good, but not quite as good as the other top tier records imo. He often builds off meta team comps, don't mistake this for not knowing the LC landscape. He will probably go around even, his unique building style makes him relatively self sufficient but some support can prevent overcooks, though I don't expect it to be an issue. Probably between 5 and 10k.

Eric - Eric works really hard in prep and plays very well in game. Imo he is much better with support, even with a good foundation and metagame knowledge. He has played multiple SCLs in sv with good success. An absolute bargain if he goes cheap. (Edit: Eric plans to not sign up but I'm leaving this here anyway)

Hacker - has had some trouble in the SCLs he has played in but amazing success elsewhere. Should probably go cheap or with support, but he can break through. Probably the builder with the most teams stolen from him, which should tell you he is the single best support pick in the pool. He'll start though, just don't pay 15k like in prior years.

Envy - Envy went 4-5 as a rookie last year and has been playing bw last lcpl. He is knowledgeable in sv, I think he should definitely start but should go cheap. He has a great foundation to build on.

These players should be considered to start should they sign up:

Jake - before my time but supposed to be a legendary boomer. I would say guaranteed start if he LCs on the hype alone but I have done 0 research. Has a trophy, do research if this is a genuine LC signup

Kaboom - Kaboom wasn't great last SCL but is great this LCPL on my team. Very competent, and I fully trust most of his metagame opinions and I based a lot of mine on his. He builds, but put him with people who know the tier. Should always be drafted for cheap. Talk to him before drafting him.

Greedy_eb - this player is cursed in lcpl and always put in oldgens and goes positive anyway. His best tier is current gen LC, and imo he is playing and building well, but needs support if he starts.

LilyAC - no idea if she signs up, but a very skilled veteran who I haven't teamed with. Legendary support, but I have never teamed with her. If she wants to start she probably should, I just don't have enough info to say it's certainly a good idea.

Wail Wailord - no clue if he signs up, but he has quietly been very good in sv in multiple LC sub forum tournaments. Has prior SCL experience in swsh too, so this could be an excellent cheap starter.

JuanSG - he might be retired, I'm not sure because he retires and unretires a lot. He is here because he is probably the player I least like to prep for and play, whenever I play him in tournament I tend to lose badly, I don't agree with all of his metagame opinions but his teams are very smart. He plays great too, so I think he can start. Pair him with support, I'm concerned the 9 week season will be long so it would be good to reset mental if things go wrong. Probably the most underrated player in the pool, though I've not teamed with him.

Bleahey - Bleahey both got top 8 in LC open before losing to the eventual winner, and 4-2 on my LCPL team. He is inexperienced compared to the pool, so I personally feel like he is best as a high quality support pick. He is a skilled player and builder, and could be due for a breakout season if someone takes a chance.

Non LC players I want to recommend if they sign up:

Petros - Petros is, at minimum, amazing support for UU. I built my Grand Slam teams, but he helped test them and also gave me ideas for better ideas or sets. I think he is ready to start though I have no clue of his results so I can't say for sure. Should always get drafted.

Esteb4n - Supported me in NU in the playoffs last week and seems to have excellent NU results. Esteb4n has a very bright mind and I think should start in SCL.

Gulch - Gulch supported me in RU and PU in the playoffs, and that help won me multiple games.

SCL NU Draft Guide

Hello ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to the NU SCL scout guide.
It’s a long one, so grab some food, a drink, and let’s get going.
Keep in mind this list is based on performances across 2024/2025 and likely sing-ups.

Starters

:houndstone: Elias PSY :houndstone:

  • 24 Circuit Champion
  • 24 Seasonal Champion
  • 24 NUPL 4-3
  • 24 SCL 7-3
  • 24 NUCL 7-3
  • 25 NUPL 3-3
  • 25 LTWC 4-2
Best NU player of 2024, no debate, and 2025 has been solid as well. Self sufficient, a unique builder, and a top ladder grinder when tour season hits. He plays the long game, rarely throws matches, and often capitalizes on opponents’ mistakes. You can expect him to bring either his conform balance builds or some suspicious looking HO that, somehow, he makes work.

Will he dominate like last year? Hard to tell, but he’s the one guy I trust never to completely collapse. Worst case scenario? He goes 4-5, which is still fine.

Perfect fit for managers without deep tier knowledge: draft him, leave him be, and watch the wins stack.

He’ll be expensive, but worth every $. Tbh at 10k he should be retained.

:porygon-z: Shengineer :porygon-z:

  • 25 Seasonal Champion
  • 24 NUPL 5-2
  • 24 SCL (Sub) 0-0
  • 24 NUCL 4-4
  • 25 NUPL 5-4
  • 25 LTWC 5-1
Breakout star of 2024. Best new name in the pool by far. I’ve managed him twice: ultra active, creative, always testing and building. Innovation is the name of the game with Shen, that what’s drive him and is the reason he is super versatile and such a hard worker. Most of the time it gives him an edge that on top of his good clicking secure him solid wins. ATM he’s the second best NU player.

Needs occasional guidance to stay focused on scouting and is still building experience, but every tour he levels up, and he doesn’t shy away from high pressure moments. He has all the tools to keep growing and get that first place ranking. If starting, I’m certain he’ll finish with a positive record.

Shen not only delivers wins, but also brings great vibes. He’s a strong team presence, easy to work with, and makes any environment better.

Stories (managing)

  • 25 Swiss Champion
  • 24 NUPL 2-3
  • 24 SCL 3-4
  • 25 NUPL 2-1
  • 25 LTWC 4-1
Last SCL was my first time working with her and despite some pre-tour rumors, I had an amazing experience. She was locked in, passionate, and gave it her all. Her record doesn’t tell the full story she got haxed in at least 3 of those Ls.

One of the most prolific builders around (she is great at discovering broken stuff like NUPL Sun or Fat PZ in the last SCL), a great clicker and emotionally invested player. If she starts rolling, expect a super positive season. If not, make sure you have a plan B to let her reset and come back stronger.

Also helps across other tiers (helped in PU, DOU during Machines’ runner-up run).Stories is 100% starter material and honestly I expect to have a better season result wise than last

:Eiscue: Danny :Eiscue:

  • 24 NUPL 5-3
  • 24 SCL 6-2
  • 25 NUPL 2-1
This is a wild one. Danny had the best W/R % last SCL and is for sure one of the best NU players around. Last season his performance was the highest quality possible, great building and great clicking.

He is a bit absent in recent times but it's Danny… SCL is the tour he enjoys and cares about the most. He will be back to form in no time and be a worthwhile investment. Experienced across multiple tiers a flexible high level player and a star in his main one.

:Gogoat: watashi :Gogoat:

  • 24 SCL 3-6
Watashi is NU royalty. Easily top 3 of all time, arguably even the GOAT. But he hasn't played much for SV NU lately. The last time he played was at the Open where he did fine going to the 4th round and losing to the eventual champion.

It was clear last SCL he needed some building support. Most of his teams were just okay and his wins were more about elite clicking than prep. But with the right builder behind him? That 3-6 could easily turn into a 6-3. The talent and experience are there.

:Muk-Alola: Esteb4n :Muk-Alola:

  • 24 LT Champion
  • 24 NUCL 3-3
  • 25 NUPL 6-1
  • 25 LTWC 2-2
French rising star is an excellent builder and a great clicker, especially for BO. Supported Danny’s big SCL run. One of the best low tier players you’ll find in this pool but a NU star in the making.

His last PL was amazing to watch with the best record while being the SV 1 slot meaning he played vs the best of the best.

Esteb4n is someone that I personally teamed up with before and I vouch for his work ethic and mental. On top of all has deep runs in PU/NU/RU so if you do not consider him NU starter material (mistake) he is one of the best low tier subs around.

:diancie: Diamonds_realm :diancie:

  • 24 NUPL 4-2
  • 24 SCL 1-1
  • 24 NUCL 5-3
  • 25 NUPL 4-2
  • 25 LTWC 2-2
Diamonds debuted in SCL last year with a solid 1-1 and he’s due for a breakout season if given the chance to start. He is another player I managed, and I can vouch he’s active, a great clicker, and builds for himself very well.

He is cold and doesn't truly know what is to go negative in a tour. He is a player that like Elias plays the long game and makes very few mistakes and has no shame in abusing what’s broken.

On top of all he is the best stall player in the tier, adding unique prep pressure for opponents. For his likely low price, the upside value as a starter is huge.

:Breloom: Django :Breloom:

  • 25 Seasonal Runner-Up
  • 24 NUPL 4-3
  • 24 SCL 1-0
  • 24 NUCL 1-1

Django is probably the player with the most NU games this year after Shengineer. One of the smartest players in the pool, his weekly SCL team reviews with me were always spot-on. The deep understanding of the tier shows in his in game decisions and team choices when you scout him.
Although he played RU for most of his SCL, that only adds to his profile as a versatile player, even if NU is his true home.

He enjoyed a hot streak earlier this year and has been putting up solid runs throughout 2025 with many playoff appearances. Given his performance, a starting spot feels well-deserved for our English veteran. Django is a lowkey heat pick who makes those around him better. Unlikely to dominate, but always able to hold his own and give you a solid weekly performance.

The last returning starter on the list. BJ had a fire start in SCL but then the tier swifts happened and disaster struck after that he went on isolation mode to train with the monks of Mt. Silver and got back to mons in the last NUPL and now hitting his form at LTWC where his performance was amazing. BJ always made a few unusual picks work and is well regarded as one of the best of current gen NU so he is a threat on the builder and on the server.

Going for his 3rd straight SCL he should be considered among the great options on the tier. Not only that we are talking of someone with a SCL title and a great teammate.

Last year was a snub not drafting him, one of the most active NU players at the time being a SSNL champ and NUPL champ. After that he disappeared for the rest of 2024.

He came back in 2025 for this year's NUPL where even if he wasn't SV1 he dominated his pool in the way of another title. Another thing to highlight on his last NUPL title is the fact he was the main builder for his team that had great crickers but not many builders and they had huge success in the tier . Tuthur is a valuable asset for any team that get him

zS and Eternally aren’t playing NU this season.

I’m looking for DOU players

If you’re interested in saving the Shogun’s DOU slot, please dm me on smogon your best games with an explanation on your approach to the game (prep, leads, important turns) which will be reviewed by my team and none other than emforbes the greatest smogon doubles player to grace the website.

These replays should include losses too bc sometimes it just doesn’t pan out, but understanding where you come from is very important

Ty for your interest. This is a slot I absolutely want to get right

Sup, if you’re interested in playing for the Foxes/Clodsires, feel free to message alyssabry, .punny, xrn476, or gondraa on Discord. If you have any interesting replays or highlights you’d like to share, now’s its the perfect time.

A Smogon PM also works we’ll read all of them, of course.

After my experience solo queuing dota 2 today, I am looking for support players in high crusader-mid archon to lane with; I play both sidelane roles but prefer offlane. Reach out to me if you are interested.

Additionally, if you are interested in being part of the platoon, reach out to lunarcd (Lunar), Kingler6931 (me), or ta1llow (Quinn)! You can send us a message on discord individually or PM us on Smogon if you prefer. If you are sending a resume or list of achievements of some sort, try to include replays; you can even include shoutouts or testimonials if you are trying to showcase your supporting/building ability.

I'd just like to reiterate this part from Expulso's post last year because I think it applies to basically every manager:
keep in mind 2 things:
1) the odds of being drafted off a DM are pretty low, though not zero;
2) we may not respond to every message, but we'll read and consider everything

Speculating out loud about retains because it's fun and we'll see how many of them I can get right. Not all of these players sign up, and some of them will either lock themselves out of a new set of tiers or indicate new tier preferences, and so as more signups come in we'll get a better idea of who's going to accept retains and who prefers to do something else. I reserve the right to say "not my fault" if I predict that a team picks up a retain and they end up locking themselves to PU.

This activity's especially interesting with OU, I think, because every team tournament there are cheap players putting up great records in the tier, and the big spends are a bit of a mixed bag? Last SCL the most successful 15k+ player in OU was, like DAHLI at 5-3? Then JJ09LIE at 5-4? The tournament-winning Dynamos make this even more apparent because they got 8-2 Niko and 7-4 Pkel for cheap and then 1-7 INSULT cost them 26k. The SPL XVI Classiest similarly got a ton of mileage out of going cheap in SV OU, and all in all it makes the speculation really interesting. How good do you have to be for 20k+ to make sense? For 10k to be genuinely good value?

I do think Attribute is a no-brainer at $16k. One of the most consistent players in the tier, 19-7 in the tier since WCOP2024, and a surefire SV1. The 15-20k range in SV OU in both SPL and SCL covered roughly the mid-to-back-end of the top 10 in cost, and Attribute has outperformed that in both tournaments.

ACR1 at $13k seems possible but unlikely. The 6-2 last SCL was fantastic (if a bit lacking in big-name wins in the tier), the 0-4 in the tier in SPL much less so. It's a case where this is a steal if you see a potential SV1, but I think if you take the middle ground of those two last results there are probably comparable options in the $8-10k range.

I doubt Finch, SoulWind or TheFranklin would get retained even if they were coming off of good seasons. None of the $10k retains seem particularly enticing.
Is Spurrific worth a retain at $23k? The second-most-expensive player in last year's pool ran over the tier with an 8-1 record, but I am not a DOU knower and so I couldn't tell you whether the retain is smart or not, but it at least seems plausible.

3d at $10k would seem like a no-brainer if he could play OU, but he's locked out of it on retain. It's still probably reasonable, 3d's had a good enough year that you can look past the limited low-tier track record. It's hard to gauge how the market will go for tour players picking up new low tiers; you probably wouldn't view 3d like a 2024 bbeeaa, Vert or McMeghan, but maybe $9.5k Fogbound Lake is a comparable? $14k BIHI? $10k fade?

They could take M Dragon at $16k or Malekith at $10k, but that feels higher than their market price in SV. eifo would be $16k, freezai $13.5k, both coming off of rough seasons. The other $10k options don't jump out, although Hiko might not end up being far off.
Skarpherim is a maybe at $16k, I guess? They've been playing everything over the past year, made Slam playoffs, qualified for OLT last year. That said, the team tours haven't gone great, and I'm not exactly sure which tier they'd be picked for, but maybe the UU PRs would put him high? The more I look at this the less convinced I am that the Platoon actually take this.

Despite not being great at SCL last year and the SV being the weakest part of his STour-winning resume, I just figured that the Platoon would take Santu back at $16k and figure it out later. He locked himself out of every tier but RU and LC and indicated an LC preference, though, and I genuinely have no idea what his price will be now, but at the very least no retain here. DAHLI, LpZ, entrocefalo and Scottie are all good players whose retains are probably too high. watashi, crying and abriel are noteworthy names coming off of rough seasons and don't seem likely to get retained, none of the other $10ks seem particularly noteworthy.
I wrote this before Gondra posted in this thread, but yeah, Punny makes sense as the retain at $23k. Went for $20k last year and farmed the UU pool, I think you get your headliner and move on to the rest of your team.

I'm not really sure who else you'd retain. Kushalos had a disastrous season last year at a massive price. Mako got paid coming from an OLT run and then had a disappointing SCL season; I wouldn't rule out a good bounceback, but at $21k? Suzuya and Gtcha have substantial retain costs and weren't great last year. Danny's coming off of a great season, but do you take the $18k? MZ and Starsama had good seasons last year, and especially the latter I don't think would be crazy at $10k, but it's not a no-brainer, and none of the other $10ks catch my eye.
If he's not retired and wants to play PU again, then I think you retain MichaelderBeste2 for $13k. Just based on what record he'll put up combined with the tiebreak upside, it's a no-brainer. There are other moving parts here so I wouldn't be shocked if it doesn't happen, but just on in-game value this makes too much sense.

Likewise, I think hellom at $16k is a lock here if he wants it. The team tour results in 2025 haven't been on the level of the crazy 2024, but like, he also made the top seed at STour and is currently holding onto an OLT qualifying spot, second year in a row. Same as Attribute, a no-doubt SV1 is good value at $16k.

RichardMillePlain is interesting at $10k, right? Like, not guaranteed or anything, but a Slam top 4, 4-0 in WCOP? I can see how gambling on a cheaper slot in Ubers has higher upside but this just seems so safe.

I'll mention Colin at $10.5k last. LpZ went for $14.5k last year with basically the same pedigree and the Slam bonus. Again, I don't know the LC pool well enough to say whether this would actually be good value, but just based on what the retain would save you based on market price, I would be fairly confident that there are savings (although, with no retain trades, how much is that actually worth?)

Even though I'd predict the pdt bounceback, there's no way $37k is justifiable (at least I think that's the retain price). Dr PhD BJ and qsns are probably priced out of retain consideration. Last year I would have highlighted $10k Pais as worth considering, but then SPL happened. DOU-locked zioziotrip is not getting retained at $10k. I guess robjr at $12k wouldn't be crazy, but surely there's better value out there. The other 10ks don't seem tempting.
I feel like Pkel SweeTforU gets retained at $10k. Last season went well and we really haven't seen them much in SV since then outside of a single SPL win. This is a case where it depends on how you personally rate them, and the fact that this Dynamos manager pair personally picked them as a rookie and were rewarded for it makes me think that they'd rank Pkel highly.

The championship Dynamos have a bunch of "maybes", and I'll highlight Niko as one of them. Basically the same deal as ACR1 except with a better last SCL, a less disastrous SPL, and a slightly cheaper retain price at $10k.

I think McMeghan at $23.5k is basically the same value proposition as last year, the extra retain price doesn't really change the math. You believe in the player, you let him loose in a low tier of his choice and trust him. If you thought that was good value last year I feel like most of the variables are basically the same, so it depends on whether the Dynamos are going to try to mix things up.

Kate for $14k? They've had a good year, played well in SV OU in SPL, so I guess maybe? This team has so many options, but I feel like this is getting to a tough price to spend on Ubers, period.

Don Eduardo for $10k is interesting because they've dominated several team tours in a row, but how much do you want to extrapolate results in RBY and GSC? How confident are you in the 6-1 last SCL? On a weaker team I think this would be an easier sell but the Dynamos have so many options that I really have no idea which way this goes. We'll see.

I didn't even mentioned Jytcampbell, whose retain price is at $10k coming off of a monster season. I just feel like the market price is a bit lower. BIHI's retired, INSULT's not getting retained at $29k, 691 is a breakout candidate for me but not really good value at $10k, none of the other $10ks seem like tough calls.
I think mind gaming at $17k is a bargain and it doesn't matter that he can't play OU on this retain. Let him pick a tier and it'll be a carry slot.

Storm Zone at $17k is probably debatable, but like Attribute and hellom I think this is a good price for a surefire SV1. SPL went fairly well, qualified for STour, solidly qualified first cycle for OLT.

The Shoguns have one more retain slot and I feel like there are a few options that it could go (Ubers-locked fade doesn't seem worth $13k to me, $35k is really pushing it for no-OU Vert, a few options are intriguing but probably not at $10k). First there's zS, who looked pretty good at SPL and then utterly dominated WCOP, available for $16k. It's a high price; do you buy zS as an SV1? As a carry slot in NU again, or another tier? Hard to say.

Then there's $12.5k Fogbound Lake. I could see this being the pick, but I could also see this being market value/just above market value, with the Shoguns preferring to gamble more for upside at a cheaper price. It's for sure an option, though. They indicated an LC preference but didn't lock themselves out of anything in either year, so it doesn't rule out the retain, it just makes $12.5k a steeper price tag.

Vert is great but not worth $35k with OU banned. I am skeptical that $13k fade locked to Ubers is good value. There are other solid players in this retain pool but no one who strikes me as positive value at $10k.
Really weird retain class with no sure things. Amukamara at $12.5k seems like the most likely thing, coming off of a 7-2 season, but they were a dark horse last year; how much do you bet on the repeat and what's the right price when you bake in regression?

bagel at $13.5k also seems reasonable, coming off the 5-3 season and the OSDT trophy. Don't really have much to say, looks like an option.

S1nn0hC0nfirm3d is coming off of a fantastic SPL, but $16k is getting into the range where you really want an SV1 slot. With a new Gibles management team I really have no idea how to gauge them here.

I'll also at least throw out Eternal Spirit here, I don't actually think the retain will happen but I don't think $10k is a crazy price at all.

Nat's not getting retained on an LC lock. JJ09LIE's had a nice run of success but $25.5k is a lot. emforbes has been inconsistent and $26.5k is a lot. Hacker and etern are coming off of rough seasons and have hefty fees themselves. Not sure who else is noteworthy at $10k here (although PZZ certainly did their best in WCOP).
This is the retain situation with the most branching paths, I think. Icemaster had a great season last year, and from my knowledge digging through Ubers tournaments for the Grand Slam post is a no-doubt Ubers starter, $12k seems reasonable (but whether you want fair value out of your retains, harder to say).

Lime, likewise, had a fantastic season and is facing a very manageable $11k retain, although I have no idea what the RU PRs will say. I'll flag it because at the very least 7-3 is legit.

Then there's JustFranco, who, again, has been great at everything he touches, most recently making the semis at Slam. He's not locked out of anything, and while $16k isn't nothing I feel like you can just let him pick a tier and it'll work out.

tazz was highlighted as a top LC option a few posts earlier, last season was good and $10k is reasonable, the biggest issue is really just how many retain options the Machines have.

Lastly, I'll highlight leng loi, who was solid in SPL at a sub-$10k price and to my knowledge took on a lot of builder responsibility. The OLT hasn't worked out very well so far but $10k isn't crazy and might allow you to grab some "great clickers who need builder support" at a discount elsewhere.

I didn't even mention myjava. myjava is great, to me one of the best in the OU pool, but I just have a tougher time with the $22k price compared to the other no-doubt SV1s elsewhere. Nails is good but $27k on retain is steep. fish anemometer is good but is $13k positive value? Stories is good but same deal, I feel like the retain price is more "fair" than "good value". There are other solid players here but no one who seems tempting on a $10k retain.
I could copy-paste what I said about Attribute and add it here. oldspicemike feels obvious at $16k to be the top OU option. Next.

Elias PSY is locked to NU, but if he's actually the most dependable option in the tier like the above PR said then that's fine, and $10k's totally reasonable. 7-3 last year was great, and maybe you can bet that the STour run is a sign of things to come and there's TB flex potential here.

Lastly, I don't really know anything about Lokifan, but 8-2 is legit and $10k's pretty reasonable. I'll wait for more PRs to say "definitely" rather than "maybe" but this does seem logical enough.

xavgb's goated but $37k is a lot. GXE's also great but last year was mid and $33k is a lot. TDNT's price seems a little too high for retain consideration. Stareal and Ewin seem like reasonable options too that I'm not certain the Terrors will have space for? sempra probably wouldn't be crazy, none of the others seem too exciting.

TL;DR retain predictions:

Spartans: Attribute ($16k, no Ubers, DOU, LC)
Breakers: 3d ($10k, no OU)
Platoon: n/a
Foxes: Punny ($23k)
Islanders: hellom ($16k), RichardMillePlain ($10k, no LC), MichaelderBeste2 ($13k, PU-locked) if he accepts it
Dynamos: Pkel SweeTforU ($10k, OU only), Don Eduardo ($10k, no DOU, RU), McMeghan ($23.5k) (I'm betting on the Dynamos to go with comfort picks)
Shoguns: mind gaming ($17k, no OU, DOU), Storm Zone ($17k, OU, Ubers, UU), zS ($16k)
Gible: bagel ($13.5k)
Machines: Icemaster ($12k), JustFranco ($16k), tazz ($10k)
Terrors: oldspicemike ($16k, OU only), Elias PSY ($10k, NU only), Lokifan ($10k)

the TDs have struck again with another fantastic decision after the tuthur ban debacle and this one might actually be the best one yet.

as most of you have most likely heard, nat has been banned from the site after being infracted for and i quote “pricefixing”. now this all sounds very bad and like it is deserved BUT there are few pieces that make this ban one of the most ridiculous one i’ve seen in probably my entire tenure on smogon and while i’m usually not one to publicly post this is way too outrageous not to. so let’s break it down:

what has nat done this time exactly? well she signed up to play LC this scl, while locking herself out of every other tier in the tournament. this could be interpreted as a pricefixing attempt had we been following the old rules for this tournament which states that “For the duration of SCL's regular season, players are not allowed to play in the tiers listed as "NOT played" in their signups post. They will only be allowed to play those tiers starting in playoffs.” BUT this specific rule has been changed to prevent pricefixing to remove the addendum about the tierlock being lifted once playoffs were reached, leaving tie-breakers as the only occasion where nat could play OU which is her best tier. now if you want to argue in bad faith you could say that nat being able to cruise for the entire tour by putting a tier she doesn’t to play and then be available for tie breaking in OU when she is one of the better options in that tier is a terrible thing aaah she should be burned alive, but she even made a post in this very commencement thread stating that in fact, SHE WOULD LEARN LC AND PLAY IF ASKED. yes you heard that right, she said that she would pick up the tier to compete as a starter if whoever drafts her wants her to start there. it’s okay guys we can pull the stake back we might not need to burn her after all.

or so I thought, cuz even after that clarification, and the clear statement that she would play, it wasn’t enough for the TDs who decided to tick another box on their bad decision bingo card for the year and banned her, which is completely beyond me and given the amount on support on stours, i’m apparently not the only one completely baffled by this. there’s literally not a single argument to be made against nat here beyond actually hating her, which is not in any case how you should moderate a website like this and if this had any and i mean any impact on the decision (which i sincerely hope and believe it wasn’t the case) whoever made it should get him or herself stripped from any position of power.

anyway that’s all, free nat please and stop ridiculing this website we could make a telenovela out of this

When the Tiers Not Played rule was added to player sign ups for SPL XIV alongside it came a new rule making sign ups with every tier in Tiers Not Played invalid.

To me this rule has always seemed like a roundabout way of preventing people from signing up just to bench, without explicitly saying so. Whether or not players should be allowed to sign up just to bench is a question worth discussing but currently there is no official ruling againts players expressing that desire, so long as they play if their manager asks them to.

Because of this there is no reason why a player who wants to bench wouldn't put all but one tier in Tiers Not Played, as long as they accept the risk that a manager might force them to play it. So long as that is acknowledged there is nothing in the rules againts it.

A clarifaction from the TD team would be greatly appreciated. If there is an "unspoken" rule about this then it should be brought up and discussed in the Tournament Policy sub forum as all other rule changes and hopefully posts and player sign ups made without knowing about it uninfracted.

Please buy my boy Dugtrio Is Broken hes like the biggest mons addict ive ever seen, prob surpasses me on my prime when i used to play 25 tours a week, he offers guaranteed support mainly for ou but being very well able to help almost every tier and hes a good player himself

Also ffs dont let Ash KetchumGamer go undrafted for the third time in a row, yall fucking dumb or what?
I went here to say about the same and it was a good surprise to me that my friends are already doing the right thing. Big preach here.

Both are very skilled and have potential to break the 6-X season, i dont think they will get ignored for the time around as their results were actually good recently, but it was already a crime to see Ash going undrafted in a recent one, so im just making sure everybody is looking at em. Good luck to both and would love to see Envy having a great season as well.

Talking about myself, just would love to play for anyone and will prefer to be in the OU pool. My SPL worked great with the italian blood cause they got how shit works for me very fast, and we matched up very well. My availability is already too weird and it backfires at times, and im not very active in chat at all, but ill try my best to win whenever i can be online. Thats all, have a nice season everyone.
