Welcome to Smogon! Take a moment to read the Introduction to Smogon for a run-down on everything Smogon, and make sure you take some time to read the global rules.
My ranking:
1. Chimecho
2. Baxcalibur
3. Lucario Z
4. Raichu X
5. Raichu Y
6. Zeraora
I’ll be honest, outside of Chimecho (who’s great and I adore it) this has been a batch of Megas that is bafflingly bad. I have to assume that it’s because they’re focusing on safe marketable picks for the DLC and those don’t tend to align with my tastes, but every reveal outside of Chimecho has really underwhelmed me - which is disappointing coming off of ZA’s strong batch of new Megas. I’m still optimistic for the unrevealed Megas, but for the most part, I really don’t like what I’m seeing.
Mega Lucario Z's design will need some time to grow on me. I think it looks like its a bit too big of a departure from base Lucario in terms of feel, which I guess was the intention..... but it feels a bit too different with its new color scheme.
The one thing I like about it is that its colors make it look more like Hatsune Miku lol.
Like a Lot tier: Chimecho, Lucario-Z
Pretty good: Zeraora. Like yeah it's so strangely close to its base form but the thing is the base form looks cool too. So...yeah I kinda like it!
It's fine: Baxcalibur, Raichu X. The designs are goofy but in the classic way megas are. I actually like how Baxcalibur is leaned over again like Arctibax and the dual tails look nice in motion but neither wow me.
Meh: Raichu Y. I think the ear protrusions look better when made fluffier in fan art
Also I'm just gonna say it, the renders make almost every Pokemon look awful. Almost uniformly I've enjoyed how they look in-game or other official materials (I believe I've seen the "pokemon center" art of a few that look nice, the little CG videos, the tcg, etc) way more.
Did you know we already have Mega Dragonite's sugimori art from some scan somewhere? Look how nice it is compared to the awkward render https://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Dragonite_(Pokémon)#/media/File:0149Dragonite-Mega.png
I can't wait for Mega Dimensions to be out so we can get the big sugimori art update.
Yeah we thought we could use Mewtwo in the weapon, even found its mega stones, but it just sort of sat there brooding and wouldn't react to it.
So we left it in containment for 5 years.
(Player unseals Mewtwo) Mable: Ooh, watcha think you're doing? Think you can face Mewtwo? Well, if you do, remember to catch it.
(Player approaches Mewtwo) Mable: Hey, remember what I said, CATCH IT!
(Battle starts... and first thing I do is throw a Master Ball at it while it was charging its first move) Me: So, you made catching it like it's this big deal, like it was going to be difficult or something.
Yes, I used my Master Ball on Mewtwo. They're both purple, have bulbous growths, and start with "M". They were made for each other.
Also shine a bit of a spotlight on what she said before explaining why Mewtwo is here.
Mable: Good, you caught it. Would you like Auntie Mable to tell you why its here? Options: (Top) Please tell me, Auntie Mable. (Bottom) You don't have anything better to do? Me: The Distortion World will start obeying the laws of physics before I call you "Auntie Mabel". (Selects bottom option) Mable: Huh, wasn't the option I was expecting, but I'll tell you anyway. Me: Did you want me to simp for you? I ain't Naveen and you ain't Canari.
Seriously, has anyone simped for Mable? I've seen simping for Canari, Jacinthe, and Emma, even a bit for Taunie, Lebanne, Gwynn, and Griselle, but I haven't really seen anyone where they think having Mable having the option to call he "Auntie Mable" would be an instant pick. EDIT: Apparently there are some *sigh*.
Though the story Mabel tells is interesting as it pretty much implies the XY player never went after Mewtwo. Infact, it implies Team Flare caught Mewtwo BEFORE the events of XY, so it would have been impossible for the player to have encountered Mewtwo in Kalos's Unknown Dungeon if we're now being told it was locked up in Lysandre Labs for five years. Or I guess it just so happened a second Mewtwo decided to go to Kalos and inhabit the Unknown Dungeon?
Honestly, with all Team Flare's tech, I thought they were going to reveal they made this Mewtwo and its Mega Stones (thus explaining why Mega Stones for an artificial Pokemon exists) but it just didn't finish developing in time before they discovered the sleeping form of Xerneas/Yveltal. The Mewtwo in the Unknown Dungeon was another Mewtwo (and since its found holding a Mega Stone maybe imply it broke into Lysandre Labs and stole the Mega Stones right after the Ultimate Weapon incident).
And ZA is the first main line game which had to deal with the canonicity issue concerning the Mortality Duo. Which one did Team Flare catch and use, Xerneas or Yveltal? GF's solution: throwing their hands in the air and saying both. Apparently ZA takes place in the timeline of the imaginary/cancelled Z version. Alright, sure, fine, in the grand scale doesn't really change anything as, unlike in SwSh and SV, the other Legendary doesn't appear. Though, Mable does treat the Xerneas and Yveltal that appear as the ones they captured, yet in XY you had to capture the Legendary for the story to continue (I guess the simplest answer is that Calem/Serena decided to release the Legendary at some point).
1. Lucario Z
2. Chimecho
3. Raichu X
4. Baxcalibur
5. Raichu Y
6. Zeraora
Yeah I love Lucario Z, pretty much everything about it is a hit for me. The way it contrasts with normal Mega Lucario when put side-to-side, the closer Anubis connections, and funnily enough the Hatsune Miku color scheme really works too! It barely beats out Chimecho as a pretty high tier Mega design. Raichu X has grown on me during the past few months, I just hope its actually good... Baxcalibur is cool although it's just regular Bax but finished lol. The last two are still a solid meh from me.
honestly would be pretty funny for Mega Lucario Z to have Mega Launcher, it does learn all the moves that ability boosts. it would be nice if mega launcher randomly also included flash cannon.
in singles this probably doesn't matter that much but terrain pulse is presumably pretty good in doubles?
I think you guys are overthinking things.
Zeraora was fighting a bunch of Poison types, but has nothing to do with Poison, Ground, or Psychic seemingly.

Yeah these theories were thrown around constantly with the base game pre release trailers and nothing came from any of them. I don’t think they do easter eggs like this usually.
I would also like to point out that Mega Launcher goes against a lot of the Mega Lucario Z’s flavor and doesn’t synerize well with Lucario too.
First, Lucario Z is supposed to be more defensive and speedy than the original Mega Lucario. It’s a big trait of the new Mega that it’s “less destructive” than the original Mega. So right off the bat, the ability Mega Lucario Z will (likely) get is more defensive/supportive.
I also trust the flavor stuff is accurate and points in a vague direction. Look at Mega Hawlucha. Promo material said it’d be bulkier and a little more than half of its new stats go into bulk.
Second, Lucario Z also retains its original typing. That means its STABs are Fighting and Steel, and in terms of Pulse moves that’s just Aura Sphere being STAB. Notice how it’s not Fighting + Dark/Dragon/Water? If it were designed with Mega Launcher in mind, I think that it would have STAB on a second Pulse move other than Aura Sphere. That is because Mega Lucario already has Adaptability. Would be hard to sell the new Mega form of a Pokemon when the strongest move of the new form gets only a slightly bigger boost than the original and potentially ends up doing the same amount of damage anyways.
Potential abilities I think that are more likely are Filter, Multiscale, a variant of Purifying Salt, maybe a stronger Friend Guard.
But honestly it’s hard to actually say since the promotional material is all over the place.
I’m basing my ideas off how the promos detail Mega Lucario Z itself and assuming all that stuff about Mega Energy is exclusive to ZA and GO. Assuming mostly because a more defensive mega desynergizes a lot with a temporary form. It’d make Mega Lucario Z significantly worse than the original.

I agree with your point overall, but to be fair, Mega Launcher is currently only possessed by mono-Water types.
Though I’d also raise a point against Mega Launcher in that it’s called Mega Launcher, which I think implies the use of some kind of blaster weapon. Notably, Mega Blastoise has three huge cannons, and Clawitzer has a giant gun arm. Whereas Mega Lucario Z has, um…
(This is tangential, but my god I hope they choose to get some solution for Abilities sorted out by the next Legends game. Or at least announce any new Abilities that come regardless of whether they’re implemented in that game. It’s really annoying having to wait until Champions comes out just to get a full picture of how these Megas will actually function.)
1. Lucario Z
2. Zeraora
3. Raichu Y
4. Chimecho
5/6 Raichu X & Baxcalibur
Ordered partly one which ones I'd consider for an in-game team.
While I have nitpicks with most of them, I like MLZ's color scheme a lot, and the face markings are an upgrade to old Mega Lucario. I don't like the thin dowsing-rod hair, but otherwise a solid design. Zeraora is partly coasting on regular Zeraora being cool and it being nice that we're getting some cross-generational mythical love. I like Raichu Y mostly because it looks more like Pikachu, but I am still not sold on its... ear hair? Horns?
Chimecho is fine, and nice that it got a mega, but I am not a big fan of the "make it look like its prevos" design philosophy that several new megas have. (I've seen MLZ compared to Riolu, but I find that less obvious or blatant than Feraligatr & chimecho).
Mega Raichu X looks too much like regular Raichu, and it's a bit disappointing it's mono-type. I don't necessarily think it should be fighting (though it could) but I get a vampire vibe from it, and think it could have gone dark or ghost. I tied it with mega baxcalibur. Although I like regular baxcalibur fine, and I appreciate the mega looking like it's been impaled with a sword, I don't care for the headgear and overall it doesn't appeal to me.
Considering the context of how moves with names that contain a specific Japanese word that translates to both "aura" and "wave" are what qualify for the Mega Launcher boost, I'd say the possibility shouldn't be ruled out. An ability that increases move damage could also be a good way to compensate for most of the Mega's BST boost (presumably) going to defenses and Speed. This isn't even getting into how Game Freak can just make an identical clone ability with a different name for flavor. They aren't exactly a stranger to that.
Besides, Lucario is heavily associated with Aura Sphere. Giving it a form where that move in particular becomes its best STAB option just makes sense.
That might just be due to a pun? Assuming "wave" in Japanese also deals with water.
