Hobbies I’ve Decided to get Decent at Drawing this Year

Hello, I like drawing, but I’m not very good at it. I’ve decided to attempt to draw a bit over the year to see if l can get better at it. Also, this may sound stupid, but I typically draw with a pin. I decided to use a pencil and, shocker, it makes your drawings look better if you spend some time on it. I don’t think this really belongs in Smeargle Studio so I’m invading Cong sorry. I’m puttting Ref over drawings I used a reference for.

Since I watched Death Note over Christmas week, I tried to draw Light:

I think it turned out ok. The hand definitely was a struggle. Don’t ask me why he looks like a 30-40 year old disheveled man instead of a charming young adult. I don’t know I’m bad at this.

Yesterday I just drew some random stuff:

I find it interesting how many different ways people seem to draw eyes.

Today I decided to draw some Pokemon. So I obviously went with Dhelmise and Ampharos:

I also added some fun colors. I’m happy that the chain leading to the anchor looks pretty good and natural, especially where the chain is smallest. The anchor itself kinda looks flat. I’ve noticed that these drawings typically look flat even when I reference stuff that has depth. I think it’s a perspective and proportion problem or something. I’ve started watching Demon Slayer this year so I thought it would be cool if Ampharos kinda looked like Zenitsu. I thought this would let pretty horrendous because I was drawing something a bit of my scope in my opinion, but it turned out decent. The arms are a bit off but it looks pretty cool otherwise.

Yeah that’s pretty much it. I’ll try to update this thread with random stuff I draw over the year. Also any advice is appreciated!

I recommend studying boring* stuff a lot, and using that to build up your skills as you incorporate it into the fun cool stuff you want to draw. Specifically: perspective, basic shapes/forms, and anatomy. In that order, I guess.

*this is only boring for some people. For me personally it's very fun.

Also that Ampharos is very badass

good start anchor, here's what I would recommend:
if you're very interested in drawing people, I recommend learning the anatomy of the head. General anatomy is always important, but head anatomy imo really allows the character to be distinguishable, especially when you try to draw without references.
as for more cartoony subjects like Pokemon, ig it really depends on what mons you choose to draw, but you can start with perspective. understanding perspective can also help with shading later on, which can really add depth to drawings
