Welcome to the 2025 Monotype Circuit Playoffs! This is what the entire year's Monotype tournament circuit has been leading up to, we now finally have our 16 playoff contestants. The whole tournament will be hosted in this thread. The winner of this tournament will receive the Monotype ribbon they've been playing to qualify for over the past year!

SPECIFIC RULES
  • This is a standard Gen 9 Monotype tournament
  • This tournament will be SINGLE Elimination
  • All rounds will be Best of Five. You may switch teams in between battles of the same set.
  • Matches are to be played on Pokemon Showdown! You must play on either smogtours or the main server. All other servers will not count even if you win!
  • To encourage the development of the metagame, and so that everyone is on an even playing field, all matches must have replays recorded. If neither player posts or at least saves replays of the match, the game will be coin flipped regardless of whoever won.
  • MAKE SURE TO POST YOUR REPLAYS. ALL REPLAYS MUST BE POSTED IN THE THREAD FOR IT TO COUNT!
Standard Rules and Clauses
  • Sleep Clause Mod: Limit one foe put to sleep
  • Species Clause: Limit one of each Pokémon
  • OHKO Clause: OHKO moves are banned
  • Evasion Items Clause: Evasion items are banned
  • Evasion Moves Clause: Evasion moves are banned
  • Endless Battle Clause: Forcing endless battles is banned
  • HP Percentage Mod: HP is shown in percentages
  • Evasion Abilities Clause: Evasion abilities are banned
  • Same Type Clause: Pokémon in a team must share a type
  • Terastal Clause: You cannot Terastallize
  1. Identity: I expect many battles to be completed under alts. This can be bad for tournament security, and thus I will make this clear: If I hear any whispers of identity theft (battling as someone you are not) or proxy battling (helping someone else battle through pm) I will not be pleased and I will take severe actions.
  2. Scouting: Next, I do not want to hear anything about counterteaming, at all. Do not complain about it. I also don't want to hear about any blatant scouting. There is a difference between "[user] is known for using Fire-type" and "let me follow [user] around all day to watch all his battles since I am his opponent". I expect a lot of the former and none of the latter. I give permission to all battlers to ask any person spectating their battle to leave if they do not want them watching. Everyone will have access to your replays from earlier rounds though.
  3. Timer Clause: As for taking long between moves, if your opponent asks you to hurry up, please oblige. If you are doing a damage calc for a key turn that is one thing, but prolonging every move is suspicious and annoying. Don't do it. Furthermore, Battle Timeout is a rule for a reason. If you run out of time, you lose, simple as that. It does not matter what your opponent says. Do not battle if you think you will have to leave mid battle, and instead reschedule for a better time.
  4. Disconnections: Finally, in the case of a disconnect, the decision is in the hands of the player who did not disconnect. The options are: redo the battle move for move, redo the battle with the same teams but different moves, or redo the battle with completely different teams. If the battle was without a doubt over, they may also take the win. Any suspicion that a disconnect was committed on purpose to redo a match may be appealed to me, and if I feel this happened there will be severe consequences, don't do it.

As with most people starting out, the idea of using six dragon types sounded like the best thing ever to 13 year old me. Turns out, I ended up having to play mono in some of my very first team tournaments on Smogon, in PSPL and BLT 2018. I was enjoying the process of collaborating with teammates for the first time, and the experience was made sweeter given I was doing well. We ended up losing to the now extinct chess room in semis of PSPL, and it marked the first time that I was really affected by a loss. Ended up putting aside mono for a long time other than a (mono) blt in between, in which I met floss and dugza for the first time. Decided to randomly sign up for MWP in 2021, and I really ended up enjoying my experience on the pandas with flugza / jojo. Funfact, the following MPL was the first time I ever (unofficially) managed a team, its still crazy that the miniors would have made playoffs if only evigaro didnt up selling.

That following year was when I actually felt that I was good at the tier (because of my results, not because I was actually good lmao). I went undefeated in mono wcop, notably almost choking a 100-0 mu vs attri because of nerves, and a playoff win vs chait. The latter was something I was insanely proud of, because at the time I was obliviously looking at it through the lens of "winning a bad mu with psy vs dark !!!". I also ended up winning my first CA playing mono for Pais in teamballo, back when it was still a discord teamtour. The following MPL was one of my favourite tournaments ever, and it too had quite the backstory to it. I ended up on the wakes because I got snaked by RatZa , and I met so many of my closest friends (to this day!). That tournament was a blast with so many unforgettable memories (needs a seperate post for itself), and it fueled my passion to continue competing in mono seriously.

The mono cup finals loss to mat was one that was really difficult to digest for me, particularly because I played suboptimally. I made bad last min decisions in prep, and made aggressive moves ingame when I had no need to. That tour was a marathon. I remember really sulking in call with plunder after the set, given I really didnt know if/when I'd get the oppurtunity to get there again, particularly due to irl not being as free anymore. This year I decided beforehand that I wanted to qual for circuit because a) I was enjoying SV mono (less mu heavy than SS OU but they wont tell you that) b) because I really really enjoy playing high stakes monotype. Something about there being competitive matches while being able to use your favourite pokemon really scratches that itch.

Mono will always be special to me and this ribbon is something that I'll wear with pride. This is only my second indiv win in so many years of competing, so it does feel very very good to make the final push.
Scarfire carried my ass so many times throughout the year by passing me good teams and by telling me to not use stupid shit (I may have given up on trying to use bug finally). Too many times to actually label them out, but definitely wouldnt be possible at all without your shit.
TheWyvernKing Its crazy how you still fed me free mu's in a diff tier. I really enjoyed using your shit throughout the year
schwipper RoyalReloaded you guys were heat for all your support early on, particularly enjoyed the rain / keldeo x cloyster teams

Dieu Amphibien Playing a tournament set with you is really really fun. There's absolutely 0 room for error ingame, and that surgical precision that I need to beat you is something I dont get to exert very often.
Trichotomy Your consistency is amazing. Was very happy to hear that people were dropping out because I ended up dodging you r1 lol. Thanks for the good calls.
mushamu I remember when we were kids in school building for that mono uu tour together back in 2018. It's really been a crazy long time since then, and I'm glad that we're still in touch. Thanks for the killer red card hatt / sash ghost teams that you gave me in the middle of my r1 set :P
