Announcement OMMPL Format Discussion Thread

Hello all, I'd like to formally announce that OMM will finally have its own PL, though obviously without any CA reward or similar. It's scheduled for around the end of February, but we're working out the date internally still. That being said, there's still a few things to work out:
  1. 6 or 8 teams?
  2. How many formats? We have 9 Official Mashups, but that's not a great number for team tours. Do we use 6, 8, or 10, and do we add a Bo3 format in that format list?
  3. What formats should we include? Should we have a Bo3 format?
  4. Should we have flex slots?
  5. Should we allow oldgens?
  6. How are players assigned to teams (auction, snake draft, blind draft)?
  7. Do we want to enforce franchises (potentially allowing for retains in the future)
  8. How many managers? Should we require 2 or even 3 managers, or no?
  9. Should we allow self-buys, and if so then for how much?
  10. What should the starting budget be?
  11. Should tiers not played be an aspect of player signups?
  12. How should tiebreaks be handled?
Anything else that we missed? Please give your opinions!

1. Either or, probably 6
2. 9.
3. 10, the 10th being Bo3 that has a different 3 OMMs every week
4. What's a flex slot? Flex slot sounds fun.
5. We have enough officials, so unless the Bo3 contains old-gens occasionally, no.
6. Auctions are fun.
7. That sounds fun!
8. 2.
9. Yes, cost of 2 managers should be ~30% of the total budget.
10. 130K could work, mainly just thinking off the idea of 10k per required player number.
11. I don't personally care.
12. First thought is Bo3/5, but we have an odd number of Official OMMs, so technically we could just do all 9.

  1. personally would prefer 6
  2. 10; that way we can have all 9 official mashups + a bo3 format
  3. if 6 then we go with pokeaaa snm lcmnm ggvgc pokebh camove, if 8 then forgo either staaab or mnb imo, if 10 then bo3 last w/ camove pokeaaa lcmnm/snm imo
  4. not this iteration imo
  5. if we have flex slots then yes but only if theyve got proper resources like bwputdaaa and g8tsaaa
  6. auction
  7. interesting concept but imo no, the team names are part of what make pls so fun
  8. 2
  9. yes, 13.5k each just like in ompl
  10. 100k
  11. yes
  12. bo3 - both teams slash 3 formats and protect 1, !randpick with remaining formats to determine 3rd slot

1. 6
2. 10
3. 9 official mashups and a flex slot. bo3 should be something with a ton of resources, development, and flexibility, such as camove vggc because it's vgc-derived
4. nothing in the entire world would make me happier. we have weird stuff here and we should let it shine. keep the players on their toes, and we'll all have fun along the way :)
5. in the flex slot
6. auction pretty please ❤️
7. nah, let us be weird every year instead of locking us in. plus i'm pretty sure the only franchise would end up being absolposters lol
8. 2 managers minimum, i don't see a reason why you'd need 3 and it would cost you a third self-buy
9. yes, we should use a standard benchmark or adjust the percentage based on how many signups there are
10. 100k
11. please disclose this in your signup it will make your life easier, just keep in mind that getting picked will be pretty hard without broadening your horizons
12. what clas said

thanks to everyone who got us this far, proud to see this community grow to a point of a larger team tournament.

  1. 6 if 8 or 10-slot tour, 8 if 6 slots
  2. 6 or 8 is most practical imo, compared to TPP the tiers will appeal to a less wide playerbase so OMMPL has to make do with less starting slots imo. Highly doubtful 60 starter-caliber players (or ~84 draftable players) sign up
  3. 6 slots: Camove/PokeBH/LC MNM/PokeAAA/2 of STAAAB/STABnMega/bo3 Mayhem
    8 slots: Camove/PokeBH/LC MNM/PokeAAA/STAAAB/STABnMega/bo3 Mayhem/1 of STAB Ubers/GG VGC
10 slots: 9 officials + bo3 Mayhem (maybe a bo3 slot and axe mixnboosted, almost never seen that format played or engaged with)

Highly recommend Mayhem, any encouragement of non-OMM signups is worthwhile. Alternatively normal randbats with Mayhem custom rules for better balancing (this makes some Abilities non-shareable)
  4. Probably not, some officials have a very small active playerbase and some metas would be flexed more than others – better to guarantee significant metagame development for everything
  5. Yes if there's demand/flex slots are a thing
  6. Auction
  7. Unsure
  8. 2 tops, 3 would unnecessarily detract from the player pool
  9. Depends on # of slots, ~15k sounds about fair for 10 slots? Somewhat higher if 6/8 slots
  10. 100k
  11. Yes
  12. No opinion

1 either works
2 10 slots
3 the 6 most played ones + 2 flex slots with unofficial ones + remaining official slots. If theres no flex slots i reccomend a lc mashup slot that rotate weekly instead of mnm. Mnm is already in mnnpl and its easy to transition from other lc mashups to other.
4 yes
5 Idts unless very populair formats exist
6 Auction
7 no retains suck if the tournament formats arent consistent
8 2 selfbuys 2 managers
9 10k for each player you have to min draft (8 slots 100k // 10 slots 120k)
11 sure
12 standard

I really would like flex slots with tiers that got resources or a lc mashup slot with rotating tier weekly

1. 8
2. 10, 1 bo3 slot
3. the 9 official + the bo3 (cant remember the 9 rn)
4. flex in bo3, change the bo3 format each week
5. no old gens
6. auctions
7. idk what that is
8. 2 managers
9. allow selfbuys prob 10k ??
10. 120k?
11. no
12. what clas said

  1. 6
  2. 9 or 10
  3. All the officals if 9, if 10 would be cool to include one of the ndoms or ranbtas, dont know how possible that is tho. Bo3 sometimes yes
  4. I do like flexing (not sure what it is)
  5. Only if we do 10 formats
  6. Auctions my beloved
  7. No? not sure what this is or how its great based on the description
  8. 2 max
  9. Yeah, 15% of budget
  10. 100k
  11. Yes, omms can get complicated for some, better to announce what not played imo

Finally got around to this.

1) 6. We don't know how many people will turn up, and OMMs scare away quite a few people. But I am open to having higher player counts.

2) Use 8. At the end of the day, I don't really care how many mashups you cram, but for the love of god please don't make a bo3 slot. If you're not drafting OMM savants like Thr, Aerobee or Clas, you're gonna have to put up with one of 2 things: 1) Dudes who can reasonably build for every tier but will find a way to lose (yours sincerely); 2) Superstar clickers who have 0 idea how to build any of the tiers meaning you need at least 2 players that can build for themselves AND someone else. From my experience, it's a pain in the ass and I really don't want to deal with it as a player or manager (esp considering even the tiers with well-documented resources have so much unknown knowns and unknown unknowns for the average initiate)

3) Camove, PokeBh, PokeAAA, STAB MnM, LC OM (preferably something like STAB LC or LC MnM), STAAAB, AAA Ubers and unironically BWPUAAATD. Listing random metagames here, but ideally something from this pool. We can also include GG VGC Reg G for the doubles crowd.

4) I actually dig this. Ideally, there is a theme behind this rather than it being the slot players are forced to play as a throw slot or because they're too good / versatile.

5) No. Very few old-gen formats get appreciable exploration, and I don't want to sacrifice space for an old-gen slot that could be filled with an active and evolving format. I would allow them in a flex slot on the condition that we know well in advance what oldgen formats are gonna be let in.

6) Auction, but I dig snake draft as well if the community vibes with it. Blind draft is unserious, especially when almost EVERYONE in the pool is an unknown commodity. Even camove vets are prolly gonna have a roughly even W/L when all's said and done.

7) Hell no. Let's actually have franchises first, then talk.

8) 2 is fine. 3 is OD ngl

9) Yes. No prior tours so fixed price (~15-16k)

10) Depends on player count. I would say 90k for 6 and 100k for 8 and 120k for 10.

11) Yes. I would go as far as to say this is the most important part of the player sign-ups here. I know FOR A FACT that someone's gonna forget to draft a PokeBH player and expect someone like Pannu to play.

12) Host rolls 1, opposing teams pick 1 between formats left.
