Hobbies Taking A Trip Down Memory Lane: Toys-To-Life and Figurine Collecting (among other things)

Oh, yeah. We’re doing down that part of Memory Lane.

For a decent while now, I’ve noticed that a lot of my friends back from school like to collect things. Trading cards, physical games, “trend items” like Funko Pops, and my main focus of this thread, the occasional really cool figurine of fictional characters. I’ve thought for some time it would be fun to start getting into a collection of some kind that isn’t just “funny sock collection”. (Half of those don’t even fit me anymore anyways.) And yet, when I look at things that my friends all like that look like they could be fun to get into, nothing quite scratches my itch for exploration. I stopped collecting Pokémon cards a long time ago when the prices and scalping started getting out of hand, and other card games really aren’t much better. The kinds of character figurines my friends like are really neat, but they usually aren’t for any characters or series I actually recognize. That, and I don’t feel like dropping hundreds of dollars on Pokémon Trainer figures on the Internet and risk having something happen to them. And I already have a decent enough physical game collection, though I historically haven’t held onto the boxes for my GBA, DS, and 3DS games to my own regret.

I wasn’t really sure what I could get into, or back into, collecting. Game boxes without the actual games are much easier to find than the games themselves, I feel like, but again, that’s not quite what I was looking for. I was out of ideas for a while… and that’s when I remembered my obsession with Skylanders back in the early-to-mid 2010s. And here’s the funny thing- my enthusiasm for the series never actually disappeared completely. If anything my appreciation for the first handful of games has only gone up after I quit playing the games during the fifth installment’s lifespan.

Am I making this thread to give myself an excuse to get back into and show off some of my Skylanders collection on the Internet? …okay, fine, yes, that is my reasoning, but I also wanted to make a space where you guys can show of cool stuff you have, too. And who knows? Maybe this will help bring the motivation to actually get back into collecting. I still have all of the Skylanders figures I had when I was younger, for what that’s worth, and even some I forgot I had!

I am the proud owner of one of every Smash Bros amiibo!

They're on display in my living room / game room in a little smash bros display:

I also went through the trouble of getting both prints of the villager smash amiibo since they're both so distinct. You've got the original giant eyed villager and the one with the massive forehead from the fall 2015 reprints.

Under the smash fellas is an assortment of other amiibos and figurines. My littlest sister has the blue yarn yoshi so it's AWOL. Don't tell anyone the Banjo statue isn't an amiibo shhhh. The paper Lucas is something my middle sister crafted for me 17 years ago since Lucas was my main in Brawl for a little bit. It was my avatar on some long-dead websites for a while.

BONUS:

I have this one new in box Yoshi amiibo my siblings and I found at a Walmart in 2014 where it came loose inside the packaging. We call it the drunk tyrannosaurus.

BONUS BONUS

My mom knew I liked amiibo, so she got me this retro Mario one from Japan off of amazon in 2015. Had no use for it, so I never took it out of the box... And something weird's going on with the plastic inside there? I have no idea what's happening. It's like a yellowing SNES but it's Mario's skin. This isn't happening to my retro colored out of the box Mario amiibo either. Anyone have an idea what's going on?

None of my friends collect on this caliber but I have a shocking amount of friends who collect melty blood merchandise.

One of them has a "type-moon dealer". I don't know where the fuck he got that from.

Aside from him none of them have particularly grandiose collections. The only real connecting factor is that basically all of them have a copy of the MBAA PS2 collector's edition which is the only way to get a physical copy of the soundtrack. I'd like to point out one specific case where the collection consists of 3 figurines and 2 physical copies of doujinshi relating to the character.

My only collection of stuff is my keyboards. Since this photo was taken there's about 20-odd lubed cherry mx blacks in the center compartment and honestly I need to finish those and move some switches around since the switches I have in my qk80 sound WAY better in a different keyboard. I've also considered getting new switches and just leaving my taken-apart blacks to gather dust in a box but I don't have 50 dollars to spend on the ones i've been looking at right now.
