Resource DPP Simple Questions, Simple Answers Thread

I do actually hate to be that guy but when are we getting new sample teams or anything of the sort? I get that SSNL and other tournaments are happening but after that can we please get that stuff? I am not just asking for my sake I am also asking for the people that want to use meta teams but can't because the old sample teams thread was last updated in 2023 and the new one requires you to join the Discord server to find it (why is that the case btw that should be the page you are led to when you click sample teams in the builder). I am sorry if I sound rude I just really hope these resources are updated soon.

They were updated last year:

It's quite a bit of effort to put those together from people who are only negatively impacted by sharing their teams and it's incredible that they update them so often. So it is a bit rude of you yeah.

I understand that and I agree that I was a bit rude I just wish they were updated for the current meta. Again I know that we are going to have to wait a little bit I just don't want them to take too long.

The sleep ban was recently banned, so I doubt you'll get proper sample teams until after SPL / DPP PL. So best to wait 6 months, especially when the tier is back to see if sleep ban was good or not.

please elaborate on why you think the samples are not updated for the current metagame, as a summer 2025 update is quite recent for old gen samples. i don't expect the samples to be updated for well over a year.

Yeah that is fair enough. I wish it didn't take that long but hey at least this gives me the chance to experiment with my GOAT Shaymin lol.

I mean the sleep ban changes a lot about the meta. Breloom is worse, Roserade is terrible (unless I am wrong please let me be wrong), Tyranitar and Clefable are better, etc. I think the teams in the builder (while not bad) are not meta and should be replaced with meta teams when possible.

1. sleep got banned not even a month ago. expecting us to have "meta" samples when the meta is still developing is not a realistic expectation.
2. please be more specific and provide an example of a team that is no longer meta/sample worthy since sleep has been banned.

I get that and in my last post I acknowledged that. I wish we could have the samples now but obviously that isn't going to happen. For now I will probably just try teambuilding myself even though I am pretty bad at it.

Speaking of not being good at teambuilding I am definitely not good enough to know exactly what is no longer meta. I really wish I was that good tho because this is probably my favorite tier. Going back to the point, I am not really sure what team is not longer meta but if I had to guess it would be a team that is bad into either Ttar or Clefable since both of those mons get better because of the sleep ban.

teams that are bad into pokemon like tyranitar and clefable do not make it onto the sample teams, hope this helps

if you aren't sure what team is no longer meta, then you can't be certain that the samples as a collective are no longer meta.

"For now I will probably just try teambuilding myself even though I am pretty bad at it." - sure it's good to teambuild yourself, but this reads as doubling down on this notion that the sample teams are not meta or aren't usable in their current state. in my opinion, the sample teams are still in very good shape despite having to temporarily archive the breloom and roserade teams. they are more than serviceable, and accompanied with skill i think players can do well in tournaments with our samples.

your posts in this thread have come off as rude, entitled, and ignorant of the effort that goes into creating the samples as well as the contributions the community makes to facilitate them. your complaining about sample teams is not going to be tolerated further, so take your time to learn the tier and kindly stop posting.

I apologize for being rude and I really didn't intend to be that way. I won't post anymore about sample teams I was just sharing what I hope is going to happen.

Honestly? I’ve been feeling a lot better building teams in DPP post sleep & this is coming from a guy who was addicted to Scarf Loom + Gyara. Building teams in DPP can be a mouthful given the long menu of threats, at least subtracting sleep did simplify a lot of things at the cost of losing a small portion of what’s old.

Yes it is. Just write down the EVs that you have on your Spiritomb right now so that you don't lose track of your progress when you resume EV training later.

Hello again! im going for this build for my shiny spiritomb and was wondering why the evs only add up to 468 if the max is 510? im probably not doing any competitive battling soon but just wanted to try out ev training where else should i put my evs in for in game play?

For tournaments can someone explain the Winners vs Losers brackets, as well as the Bye concept?
tournaments with winners and losers brackets are double elimination, which contrast single elimination.

double elimination tournaments (if there's no prior pools rounds with different formats) start everyone in the winners bracket. this functions like a normal bracket, except for the fact that once you lose in the winners bracket, you're not eliminated; you instead drop into losers bracket, with the round of losers bracket you end up in being directly tied to how far into the winners bracket you got before you lost. if you lost in winners bracket round 1, you end up in losers bracket round 1. if you lost in winners bracket round 2, you will drop down into losers bracket round 2 to play the winner of a losers bracket round 1 set. if you lost in winners bracket round 3, you will drop down into losers bracket round 4 (not round 3; round 3 is between 2 players that were both in losers round 2). if you lost in winners bracket round 4, you'll end up in losers bracket round 6. losers bracket is like a regular bracket that gets drip fed new participants as they drop down from winners, basically.

winners bracket and losers bracket play out until winners finals and losers finals (losers finals always happens after winners finals, since the loser of winners finals drops down to losers finals) finish. the winner of each brackets finals are placed in grand finals to play each other. because double elimination tournaments let you play until you lose two sets, the grand finalist from the winners bracket only has to win 1 set in grand finals (since the losers-side finalist already has 1 set loss), while the losers-side grand finalist must win twice and give the winners-side grand finalist the required 2 set losses to eliminate them. this means grand finals is a maximum of 2 sets. when the losers side grand finalist wins the first set, this is usually called a 'bracket reset'.

you can look at a sample double elim bracket with nothing fancy (ie no one start in losers, which sometimes happens if that was part of the rules of the prior pools phase) as an example.

byes are free wins given when the player number doesnt fit the bracket neatly. pools phases, which often precede brackets, are often done in formats (round robin, swiss) that are not as picky about numbers, and are set up to cut down the player pool to that neat, bracket-accommodating number (therefore eliminating the need for byes). sometimes bracket sizes like 12 or 24 or 48 players are chosen so that those that earned 1st seed in their respective pool get a bye during round 1 of bracket.

So basically a player won’t be eliminated from a double elimination tournament unless they consecutively lose two rounds in a row (or 4 times in a Bo3 match format to a combination of two opponents)?

So this also implies that the winners bracket finalist is heavily favored to win the tournament over the losers bracket finalist?

the round losses do not need to be consecutive. if you win winners round 1, lose in winners round 2, then win many rounds through losers bracket, then lose in losers finals, you'd be eliminated then and there in losers finals.

as another example, in a 64-man bracket where everyone starts in winners round 1, a bracket run of win-win-win-loss-loss is the same exact result (tied for 5th) as loss-win-win-win-win-win-loss.

to clarify, brackets are only concerned with the binary results of sets. sets are made up of individual games. brackets don't care if you won your set with a 2-1 or 2-0 individual game score at all (these are both just set wins); brackets are only concerned with the matter of whether or not the set was won or lost.

there are some contexts (basically never brackets) where the individual game scores matter. these would be things like round robin pools, where there may be ties that need to be broken to determine seeding. but in terms of brackets, only the win/loss binary part of the set result matters.

So this also implies that the winners bracket finalist is heavily favored to win the tournament over the losers bracket finalist?
you could view it that way, yeah. it's the fair way to do it, though, since double elimination is basically about playing out bracket sets until everyone but 1 competitor has accrued 2 losses. it wouldn't be fair to the winners bracket finalist if they get eliminated after losing only 1 set when everyone else had to lose 2 sets to be eliminated.

What I want answered simply is how does an elimination occur in the double elimination format?

losing a losers bracket round results in elimination from the tournament. losing in winners bracket drops you to the losers bracket. losing in losers is an elimination.

in grand finals, the winners bracket finalist basically drops to losers bracket if the losers bracket finalist wins the first set of grand finals.

Hello, is there any thread to discuss about the ban of Machamp in OU?
For me it's a bad idea, because since the ban, a lot of Tyranitar spam the team.
Why not just ban the combo Dynamic punch + no gard and deban Machamp?
Machamp is a good Pokemon for OU even with guts.
