(Little) Things that annoy you in Pokémon

I saw a post noting that the ZA protagonist does not show a reflection in a mirror. This suggests that the reason the player is unable to enter most buildings is that the player character is a vampire.

I believe every building (outside of shops/restaurants) we are invited to, so this would make a lot of sense.

iirc in an older game there was an NPC who complained about us barging in, maybe that was a programmer complaining about the meaningless interiors.

In addition to the above I want to point out that XY had an overworld Marill NPC already living free with people out in the open, and I was looking forward to seeing it again in prerelease all the way until the Z-A dex leaked, which managed to doubly disappoint when the scrubbed DLC dex leaked too. To say nothing of the fact that this is also following up Marill's cut from PLA despite being in DP's original Sinnoh dex roster.
damn. what did marill do to make game freak unperson it like this? was it, like, stealing the devs' lunches from the company fridge or something

For the longest time, the blue flavor profile in Pokémon games used to be called “Dry,” alongside Spicy, Sweet, Bitter, and Sour.

Scarlet & Violet changed it to “Salty,” which I thought was an improvement on the localization’s part.

But then Z-A turned right around and changed it to “Fresh,” which has a totally different meaning compared to both dry and salty.

Just… why? Is it some esoteric donuteering thing? What’s the deal here? Why can’t they just pick a lane for the fifth flavor type?

The change in SV and ZA weren't localization changes, the fifth flavor just has different names in Japanese too in these games.
The normal fifth flavor, Dry is called Astringent in Japanese (either 渋い or しぶい depending on which game specifically). The Salty flavor in SV is also called Salty in Japanese (しょっぱい). Same goes for ZA's Fresh, it is also called Fresh in Japanese (フレッシュ).

Not localization changes, basically the opposite in fact. Most people would have corrected Fresh back to the normal Dry in ZA given that it is literally the same stat.

I think they just changed it to Fresh because Salty doesn't really make sense as a Donut flavor. Although then again, neither does Spicy...
yeah the donut flavors being spicy, sour, and bitter is kind of ridiculous. the full extent of spicy you get in a regular donut is cinnamon, the full extent of sour is lemon, and the full extent of bitter is probably coffee, but all of those have very clear sweet overtones to the point where i wouldn't call them "spicy", "sour" or "bitter" if i were asked to put the flavor of the donuts into a single category. there's savory donuts that can be described that way but those are very clearly not the type of donut ansha is making and honestly i count those as a different ontological category than "donut"

The game does actually provide more in-depth descriptions of the donuts that give more insight into why they taste the way they do. The sweet donuts are made with supersweet meringue, sour with tart jam, bitter with bittersweet chocolate, and fresh with fresh cream. The only one that doesn't make sense is spicy donuts being made with curry, but putting curry where it doesn't belong is a running theme in Z-A so it's "fine".

It's a really neat detail that despite the galarian birds losing their original elemental typings, they still keep some of that with their signatures moves. Freezing Glare has a chance to freeze, Fiery Wrath has a chance to burn and Thunderous Kick has a chance to drop defense! It's such a neat-wait what the fuck? Seriously? Thunderous Kick doesn't have a chance to paralyse?

Might've not said, willing to bet. The cart timer. Like it for starters RUINS PP stall strats, as I found out the hard way. Actually that's really the main reason I dislike it, though for me still counts as somewhat minor. I think some form of timer is necessary, it just shouldn't be THIS short, and encourages them to take time making moves if they play to it. Kinda ick tbf.

A week or two ago I think I made a post in another thread mentioning how I wished spinoff material had more leeway to visually rework the Pokemon with wacky new artstyles rather than abiding by their original design sheets every single time.

The original Pokemon Trozei is precisely what I was alluding to when I made that comment.

As you can see for the human characters they wheeled out this incredibly distinct early-mid 2000s Cartoon Network aesthetic. Literally no other Pokemon product looks like this. Now, granted, this was a puzzle game where you don't often see the critters themselves outside of the headshots in gameplay, but still they made no attempt to align them with this new aesthetic and that's just a very unfortunate missed opportunity.

Isn't the timer 60 minutes in SV? If so then that should be more than adequate, especially with how fast Gen 9 can be. When I had a short stint of playing Yu-Gi-Oh at the local level you were given 45 minutes to do an entire BO3 set.

I know SWSH had a 20 minute timer and yeah that would be garbage to deal with lol.

wh...what? it's like way short in BSS. so cart singles um. I'm not quite sure what you mean. But yeah I'd love 60 min, I could use my pp stall Giratina insead of my, admittedly better, av one. I love tina but the timer is not gelling well w/ it often.

Double checking the official rules in case there was some mismatch...
Each game has these limits
  • Move time limit: 45 seconds
  • Player total time limit (called “Your time” in game): 7 minutes
  • Game time: 20 minutes
So in a best of 3 format like official tournaments, that's effectively 60 minutes for a full set if you have to go to game 3
Battle Spot and its derivatives are obviously just one-off random battles so its "just" the 20 minute timer.

I am pretty sure the timers are strict (30 minutes in prior gens, i think?) due to stall strategies, lol, but especially in a "i just want to go online and play some pokemon with randos" context I can see why they lock them up so tight.

I feel like a substantial part of the time issue is how long messages and animations take (and that pvp forces animations to be on). if it takes 14 minutes to use up both player's decision-making time (assuming optimal and coordinated time-wasting), that's still 30% of the total spent waiting around if it hits the game cap. I could easily see that proportion getting well over half the total game if the players are spending their time normally. It feels like GF is putting a lot of effort into reducing the number of turns being played when they should be focusing on making turns faster instead.

I feel like animations are for the most part, with some outliers like multihit moves or the decision to have tera have a one million year long wind up animation every time it uses a stab move, good at being made faster but there's just no getting around the slowness of the messages.

With any luck both Champions and Gen 10 will find ways to speed that up in various ways, ideally all the....everything....going on over the years does get to them. Snappier message times, message consolidation, turning some things to just being pop ups separate from the text menus, etc.

I hope they finally make multi-hit moves and moves like Shell Smash and Anger Shell more streamlined. Like we cannot do

Klawfs attack rose!
Klawfs special attack rose!
Klawfs speed rose!
Klawfs defense dropped!
Klawfs special defense dropped!

Each with their own text box and particle effect. Don’t even get me started on Multihit moves, they got it right in Stadium how have we regressed to having every hit be its own 5 seconds of animation

This isn’t even the only place they could streamline, like having the poison/burn/sandstorm animations not take an extra 5 seconds each, just have it show the health bar and the animation at once and not text box

you gotta increase gameplay time somehow :B

Okay so I was misremembering the specifics and the 60 minute timer is only an option if you set up a tourney. But it does exist if you really want to use it.
