Pokémon Day 2026 - Pokemon Winds and Waves coming 2027! Champions April 2026

there's so many indonesians and malaysians on twitter laughing about how much this looks like a cheap boarding house, lmao

Ledian and Taillow finally getting a chance to be in a game again after they missed out on the vast majority of the Switch 1 era games except BDSP is nice.

Also Tynamo gets to be in another game in a row! After being in both SV and Z-A and Eelektross getting a Mega in the latter. Eelektross for years felt like it was getting the short end of the stick by not being in a regional dex since Gen 5 up until Gen 8 where it missed out on that entire generation, now it gets to be in SV, Z-A, and WiWa all in short sequence. I like that.

Ok, but will the new Rotom form be in WiWa and Champions? In the Pokopia trailer they call it the Stereo Form before calling the npc DJ Rotom, maybe impling that this form exists outside of the context of this game?
In general with all the special Pokopia NPCs I feel like if any of them were going to make the leap to the real games they'd say it somewhere. To get people excited, or as cross-marketing incentive

So let's look over my predictions
It'll be almost exactly 6 months until Worlds. Surely they don't just announce a release date for March or even April right?
Lol. Lmao even.

Some thoughts about SV & Z-A presence:
[*]While I do think SV will just loop the starters forever there is one thing I can see them do: announce a rerun of the Mewtwo raid. Fits with the 30th celebration, gives another chance for people to get the mighty mark on their Mews. Just put the starter loop on pause for its duration, then start it back up again.
[*]Pertaining to that I can see them put the kanto starter trio out as mass outbreaks.
[*]Also I suspect we'll see them rerun the Walking Wake & Iron Leaves 5* raids again. Would be kinda nice if they ran them shiny, but I doubt that happens.
Literally none of this happened. Not re-running Wake & Leaves in particular is really weird. As 5* raids those don't even have to interrupt the starters.
[*]Z-A still has one thing left to send out, judging by the text strings it'll activate as a Mystery Gift. Makes the most sense to reveal and give it out here.
[*]I am a little curious what the plan for the battle seasons in Z-A is. My assumption is it'll just keep the current ruleset and they just run it for every season until the servers are turned off but hey maybe they decide to tweak the rulesets for flavor for a while before Gen 10 hits?
Garchomp-Z as expected. I didn't expect it to have such a trailer dedicated to it though.
Nothing about the seasons, so I guess we'll just see how it goes later.

And some stuff I'm curious about with Champions that I'll be interested to see if it gets detailed:
So like the thing about the general reaction to this game can be summarized as "Finally, they're making it way easier to do competitive than ever before" which reading between the lines mostly means
1. "we don't have to play the game in order to do competitive battles". Won't have to play raids for resources and tera shards, won't have to scour the world for a million berries, won't have to sell resources & grind battles for money. Finally, we can just select our Pokemon and make the changes and go battle. Freedom!

Except everything costs the new game-specific currency. We currently just know you can get it from the battles & the presumed single player but I would like to see how much you get. And how much of that do you get in single vs PVP? Is it one time or infinite sources? What extent do you need to realistically play that stuff to get enough currency to actually do things such that it's faster and more efficient to do it here than to edit them as needed in their respective game? Related, but how much are items to buy; items are the one aspect we didn't get a look at other than knowing they're there.
Likewise, are any purchases one-time (such as moves) or do you have to pay every time you change ANYTHING?
Remember even the website says to keep battling to earn points to keep powering up your squad so ngl folks, I don't think this is necessarily the magic bullet unless you get a boatload of VP per battle.
We still don't have an indication of how much VP you earn but we did learn you get to spend more points on other things. So that's great. Confirmed a shop, for example. And rerolling costs VP too.
But don't worry though, there's all these secondary ticket currencies you can use instead, too!

: )

2. "We won't have to go to several different games to get the Pokemon we need". Makes sense, right? SV dumped the origin requirements and thus didn't bother including all of them to capture in the game so if you wanted Wolves, Calyrex, Enamorus (ok well no one needed Enamorus) or whatever you had to have SWSH, the DLC, L:A and beat the game/dlc to get there. This is one I see lifted up by a lot of people who aren't even competitive players (who, tbh, are the ones most likely to have all the games anyway) and mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm WELL! I have! Some doubts!
featured-main.jpg

This is the one look at the "recruitment" screen we have and this isn't exactly optimistic is it? It's a seemingly random set of Pokemon, you can only "rent" for a week, and you can only pick a Pokemon to rent for free once a day. & permanent recruits cost at least 1k
So a bunch of questions that need clarity here are:
-The "r" stick icon seems like it could indicate a reroll the screen. So having confirmation on that would be nice. Is there a limit on rerolls?
-So ignoring rerolls for a moment, how often does this screen refresh? Once a day? Every battle? I doubt it's every time you enter the screen. When you buy a Pokemon, does it automatically fill back in?
It refreshes every 22 hours but you can spend VP to reroll it. Isn't that great?
-Actually, can you buy multiple copies? PVP always uses species clause so I can't see many people wanting do that but I guess having multiple builds available for different formats instead of editing the same Pokemon over and over could have merit.
Unanswered. I still lean towards no, but it'd be nice to know for sure.
-How deep is the recruitment pool? Aside from knowing that not literally every Pokemon will be available (presumably at launch it'll be all fully evolved SV + Z-A Pokemon + a few notable NFEs like Pikachu (Clefairy for example)) I mean... A lot of people have just immediately assumed oh well obviously everyone will be available through this screen but I have some doubts that Legends and especially Mythics will just be randomly available through the recruitment gacha. Like the Legends are really strong Pokemon that you either have to do a bunch of nonsense to get to (Kubfu is probably the fastest you can get a legend and you still have to go through a couple hours of game time and story events to actually get a thing you presumably have to evolve to even use in Champions proper) and the Mythics are (depending on the era) best known for being event-only &/Or also having to do a bunch of nonsense to get to. I can EASILY envision a situation where you have to do things to get them, or that they might only be available to purchase during specific event periods. Live Service Games that are also still wanting you to participate in the regular games, baby!!!
There's still some room for clarification but considering we've seen Battle Passes that give out Pokemon already, and they underline several times stuff like Mega Stones only being available in one way (Dragonite's through the Battle Pass, the kalos starters & e-floette by "visting" from Home) or another and then being put in the shop later....it sure seems like yeah you're only getting access to these briefly over time. Whatever the pool of Pokemon is in the shop will be a more limited "common" pool that will expand over time.
I absolutely, definitively, believe that Legends and such will only be available either via stuff like Battle Pass (at least initially) or maybe through whatever the "single player" is for a handful of them (Victini is shown off prominently for the Arena).
-Also let's think about costs. iirc we only see Gardevoir and that cost 1000 VP. But is that the same for every Pokemon? Is something NFE like Pikachu worth less, are Legends worth more, does it all base on BST for example, etc ,etc.
Not shown, I think.

And related to that all that, would be nice to know exactly how Home & Champions interact. Although they use the term of bringing Home Pokemon "into" Champions, the infographic just sort of had them connected without arrows & we know you can't bring Pokemon out of Champions back into Home. My assumption based on that is it might instead use a PBR style "copy" feature, where you select what Pokemon/boxes you want and then it'll make a separate copy that you can edit or later down the line make an updated copy. Or maybe it functions like the Battle Box, where they have to be in Home all the time in order to show up in Champions? I do think they'll go into more details of how this works here.
Well it's weird they keep referring to it as "Visiting" which makes me think there's something more to it, but they do indicate they do actually go into Champions and then are pulled back out. Champions sets are, as figured, separate. That includes all training.
There's also an indication that Champions doesn't flatten the moveset, you still have to make changes; it specifies that if it knows a move that isnt in Champions you have to replace it with more training (lol more VP fees).

Also an oddity that if you send back, change form, then send into Champions again all the training is undone??? That's bizarre.

So once again yeah to get the most out of competitive you are going to just want to have the Pokemon to begin with. You'll likely get up way quicker if you've played al ot of eg SV and have a bunch of those resources rather than grinding out more resources. As should have been figured lol. Obviously they still want you to play the games.

"HOME spring 2026":psygrump:

What is this nonsense, Game Freak. Get your/ILCA's act together and stop waiting months after a game's release to add HOME connectivity. What's the issue this time? You wanted to make one big update for ZA and Champions at the same time or something? Make 2 updates. For how long this is taking they had better be working on making a U-turn on the "mons going into ZA can't go back into SwSh/LA/SV" decision.

"Champions April 2026/ mobile later" :pikuh:

"Winds/Waves 2027"

I know a lot of people are going to be pleased with this delay because they think it will translate into better graphical quality / battle frontiers / whatever, but I would rather this come out end of 2026. It's already had more time in the oven than past generations. Hopefully the extra time is not mostly to change a bunch of stuff around because of the teraleak, because that won't translate into the "quality" people want and then people will just complain on end about how the game took 5 years and still sucked. Well, maybe Switch 2 will have been hacked by then so we'll get datamines of the games when they come out.

Anyways, on the positive side, the game looks nice enough so far, and they thankfully went with "Winds and Waves" instead of "Wind and Wave." I'm looking forward to the expansion of diving; the water level in new snap was very pretty, so it will be cool to see what they do here.

South East Asia is a neat choice of region, and kudos to Game Freak for not just picking Japan or North America or Europe again (although I was looking forward to a myth-inspired Greek region when the leak-reposters erroneously misinterpreted the map as the Cyclades). For those skeptical it's SEA, the teraleak confirmed it already (unless game freak really spent a lot of effort retooling it into somewhere else because of the leaks).

As for the starters, none of them really jump out at me so far. The fire dog Pombon is maybe the least-objectionable for me at the moment. Browt looks too much like and angry bird and gecqua looks too much like a fakemon attempt at drawing sobble from a 4chan leaker's text description. But it doesn't really matter because I always pick my starter based on the final evo. In both gens 8 and 9 the base form I liked most ended up having final evos I didn't care for.

Being a fire dog, hopefully the hidden ability of Pombon3 will be "incin intim," which drops all of Incineroar's stats to -6 when both are on the field at the same time. :P

this is insane levels of creating a narrative ill be honest. most of what the tera leak discovered is pretty apparent here already, from the region design to the pc having surfboards and the hints of underwater and sea exploration. Also why would u want less time for them to work on the game.... a 5 yr dev time is really good and the perfect balance between not too long but not too short for most games

Can we SR for shiny Deoxys in ORAS? If not, then this is the biggest reason to shell 20 bucks for these ports

(but I got mine in Go years ago, so)

Speaking of which, I guess they dropped that idea of the "seed" pokemon? IIRC it was meant to be the starter. Although maybe it will be this gen's Cosmog

Also, while obviously we don't know what it is, as per tradition the Japanese title has revealed an additional symbol they could be related to Gen X's Super Mechanic:
PKMNWiWaSuperSymbol.png

A Poke Ball with wavy lines on either side of it. Certainly thematic, but what could it mean...

I guess also wouldn't hurt to go over the Super Mechanics we've had in the past:

Mega Evolution:
* A stronger form with increased stats. Usually the new stats reflected the base form though sometimes would deviate to a new niche.
* Usually an Ability change (either an existing Ability or a completely new one; sometimes Pokemon's strategy revolves around Ability).
* In certain circumstances a Type change (which includes completely losing a Secondary Type becoming Mono-Type, though that's a super rare case).
* Downside 1: Uses the Item Slot.
* Downside 2: Species exclusive.
* Potential Changes: Another downside used to be it was Once Per Battle, however Legends Z-A made a change where Mega Evolution runs on a power meter. Using attacks charge the meter, and when full can Mega Evolve a Pokemon. While a Pokemon is Mega Evolved the meter depletes, when depleted the Pokemon transforms back. The meter than can be charged again and Mega Evolve either the same or different Pokemon once full. So new positives is multiple Pokemon can Mega Evolve (and auto Plus Moves use (explained below)); new downsides is must charge a meter first & limited time as Mega Pokemon.
* Variations:
- Primal Reversion (Only difference is Groudon & Kyogre immediately transform instead of waiting for the player to press a button)
- Dragon Ascent (Rayquaza only needs to know the Move Dragon Ascent to Mega Evolve; this means it can also hold an Item)
- Plus Moves (in Legends Z-A, in addition to increased stats Moves can get an additional power boost by becoming Plus Moves. To use a Plus Move as a Non-Mega Pokemon you need to spend some of the power meter. A Mega Pokemon will always use Plus Moves (it will not remove any additional power from the meter which is already depleting))
- Z Mega (Introduced in Z-A, Pokemon has even high stats but depletes meter faster)

Z-Moves:
* A super powerful Move (usually). When activated Moves which match the Z-Crystals criteria turn into the Z-Move (or, in the case Status Moves, receives an additional effect)
* Any Pokemon can use the "elemental" Z-Crystals as long as they have a Move of that Type. For attacking Moves they turn into the Z-Move and both its Category and Power is based on the base Move's (higher the Power the stronger it is (maxing at 200), a Z-Move will never go below 100 Power); Z-Moves are 100% accurate and have no secondary effects. Status Moves don't change into the Z-Move, rather they gain additional effects which includes but not limited to stat increases, resetting stats, healing, and boosting Critical Hit ratio.
* There are species exclusive Z-Crystals. These Z-Crystals only work with one Move. Usually these "exclusive" Z-Moves are more powerful than their "elemental" counterpart and sometimes have a secondary effect (and in one case changes into a powerful Status Move).
* Downside 1: Uses the Item Slot.
* Downside 2: Once per battle.

Dynamax/Gigantamax:
* Pokemon grows huge for 3 turns, doubling its HP (HP lost before and after transformation is based on percentage).
* All Moves change to Max Moves (and Gigantamax Pokemon gain an exclusive G-Max Move, replacing the Max Moves of that Type).
* Any Pokemon can Dynamax; Gigantamax is species exclusive.
* Attacking Max Moves, similar to "elemental" Z-Moves, have their Category and Power based on the base Move's (though each Move's Power increase varies; none go above 150 but they can go below 100). However, unlike Z-Moves, they have an additional secondary effect which is either a stat increase, decreasing an opponent's stat, or summoning a weather/terrain.
* All Status Moves change to Max Guard, which is like Protect but with more benefits (in addition it fully blocks most Max & G-Max Moves whereas normal Protect and its variants only block some of the damage). In addition, if you want, you can use Max Guard two turns in a row or for all three turns without chance of failing.
* G-Max Moves' Category and Power is also based on the base Move's but Power is higher than their Max Move counterpart. G-Max Moves also have more unique secondary effects including but not limited to better stat changes, afflicting status ailments, boosting Critical Hit ratio, and setting up Field Hazards.
* Does not take up the Item Slot or require a specific Move.
* Downside 1: Only lasts for 3 turns.
* Downside 2: Once per battle.
* Downside 3: In order to Gigantamax the Pokemon must have the Gigantamax Factor. If Pokemon doesn't have Gigantamax Factor it must be fed Mushroom Soup at the Master Dojo accessed through the Isle of Armor DLC. In addition, Pokemon with the Gigantamax Factor cannot Dynamax, once again they must eat the Mushroom Soup in order to lose the Gigantamax Factor.
* Downside 4: Lorewise a Pokemon can only Dynamax/Gigantamax if they're in a Power Spot. Main games have only had Power Spots in Galar. Pokemon Masters (EX) and Pokemon GO allow for Dynamaxing/Gigantamaxing without Power Spots via special bond with their trainer, but canonicity of those games is questionable.
* Variation: Eternamax (not usable in Sword & Shield and only fought as a boss, a special Dynamax form that makes Eternatus incredibly powerful)

Terastallization:
* Pokemon is covered in a crystal form that changes it into a Mono-Type based on a hidden trait called Tera Type.
* In addition to keeping its normal STABs, a Pokemon that Terastallizes to a Type it wasn't originaklly gives it STAB on those Types.
* If the Pokemon Terastallizes into a Type it was originally, the STAB for that Type is boosted from 1.5x to 2x.
* Any Pokemon can Terastallize.
* Does not take up the Item Slot or require a specific Move.
* Downside 1: Once per battle. In addition once Terastallize a Pokemon you need to recharge the Tera Orb (this recharge restriction is removed after completing the Indigo Disk DLC).
* Downside 2: If you want to change a Pokemon's Tera Type you need to trade in 50 Shards of the desired Type at the Treasure Eatery in Medali. DLC isn't required but collecting 50 Shards can be grindy unless you have the Glimmering Charm which you can get from the Teal Mask DLC.
* Variations: Ogerpon (instead of itself, the mask Ogerpon is wearing Terastallizes changing to a Type associated with the Mask and changing its Ability to Embody Aspect which raises one of its stats), Terapagos (when it Terastallize it changes to a unique Stellar Form: Its Type becomes Stellar, its stats increase, changes Ability to Teraform Zero, and Tera Starstorm gains additional effects)

So we've had 2 Super Forms (one an advanced stage and another becoming a kaiju), a Super Move, and a Super Type. What do you think will be next? Judging from the titles, maybe... Super Weather?

that presents was bullshit. like actual shit out my ass bad. hooooly shit.

-NO b3w3

-TOO MUCH KANTO

-champions has a BATTLE PASS

-70 DOLLAR shitty speaker

-gen 10 is RIPOFF PALWORLD and takes place in 1 REGION instead of the ENTIRE POKEMON CANON

this is the biggest ip in the world btw. how can a company have this much money and still be so incompetent?? i made the critical mistake of getting my hopes up for this direct but they didn't have b3w3. disgusting. 30th anniversary btw. i hope tpci and game freak both learn that they need to cater themselves to my specific whims in the future because if they don't then they've lost themselves a valuable customer

I have grown up with Pokémon and still love it but I can’t help but feel pessimistic with how frequent and money hungry these releases feel.

Which releases do you mean here, exactly?

Winds & Waves are coming out so far away that it’ll be the longest gap between generations yet, and there’s no sign right now that they’re gonna be pumping RSE out right on the heels of FRLG (which are the first re-release of a legacy main series game on the Switch in its 9-year life)

Pokopia is the first full-fledged standalone spin-off we’ve had since… what, Detective Pikachu Returns in 2023? So 3 years ago?

Even Champions continues to drag its tail toward release.

My personal thoughts on what I've seen from Winds/Waves so far (P.S. Keep lEaKs away, please!):
  • Team Pombon, which I imagine is 90% of fans right now because dog. I'm personally so because we've already had a Grass bird and Water lizard (even though I like Gecqua more than Sobble).
  • Here's to hoping Ledian, Carnivine, and Lumineon finally get the evolutions they've needed for about 20 years now.
  • Despite the fact that I liked Alola, it felt like Gen 7 had a ton of missed opportunities; I'm kind of hoping W/W, being new island adventures, deliver where those games didn't (underwater exploration is a start, at least).
