CAP 38 So Far

-----

In this thread, you may post work-in-progress and final stat spreads for the community and the TLT's consideration, and make comments on other peoples' submissions. The Stats Leader, Gekokeso], will decide on a slate for voting based on the community's input. In the Stats Limits thread, the Stats Leader decided on the following limits (updated):

A spreadsheet for calculating the ratings can be found HERE. To use it for yourself, create an editable copy with File > Make a copy. If you don't have a spreadsheet program, OpenOffice and Google Sheets are free. You must have the stat rating values listed correctly in your submission or it will be ignored for the slate.

When you are satisfied with your stat submission, mark it as finished using the following final submission post format:

Stats Leader over here. Gonna clear some stuff before opening the stat spread submissions.

As the Stats Leader, I reserve the right to reject any spreads that me or the rest of the TLT deem to be too powerful and/or are engaging in BSR abuse. If there's any concerns, feel free to reach out to me, and I'll try to identify any problems that I or other members have with your spread and offer some suggestions to help make them more suitable for submission. Also, when constructing spreads, please remember to use the most up-to-date BSR Calculator (which can be found in the OP) and that you have the correct T-value of T = 2.25 (you can change the T-value by going to the sheet labeled "Turns Value (T)" and changing the number in the green box to 2.25). Finally, make sure to supply relevant damage calculations, as these often play a very crucial role in determining which spreads make it onto the slate and which are left on the cutting room floor.

the most "mini-eternatus" you can get, probably. pretty much just took etern's stat spread and sanded it down until i got numbers i thought would fit with cap's power level. then i realized i fucked up and used the wrong t-value so i had to do it all over again (i assume this is a time-honored cap tradition), but the numbers remained mostly the same. not really much to say about it other than it's a big ol stat stick that generally plays straightforward outside of meteor beam, with the raw stats to spec into offense or defense well without being overbearing at either. this might seem like a boring answer to some, but it seems like the obvious answer to me

i hope i did it right this time

Speed Reasoning

I've been thinking about somewhere between 126 and 129 Speed. Initially I was thinking 127 to avoid Speed ties while also leaving 126 open in the future for similar reasons. However, 127 ties +1 Adamant Dragonite. This isn't the best or most common Pokémon in CAP, but it does setup reasonably easily on CAP 38 whilst being strong enough to threaten an OHKO on offensive sets with +1 Ice Spinner and that baked in option is something I find appealing. This is still WIP so it is possible to flip that and say 128 Speed is nice to be able to Wisp Dragonite we give that to CAP 38.

+1 252+ Atk Dragonite Ice Spinner vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Venusaur: 374-440 (95.6 - 112.5%) -- 68.8% chance to OHKO

SpA Reasoning

Bulk Reasoning

Misc.

Pumped up the BST to 590 for flavour reasons. Typically box legends are 680 BST and Eternatus is 10 above that. 590 does the same for most 'normal' legends without impacting BSR.

130/54/74/130/74/128 - 664.21
bsr only leaves room for something small

Let me preface this by stating it's likely going to be the most conservative spread subbed, and given it's also my first time competitively subbing, I don't personally expect it to really end up slated, much less winning in the polls. But might as well dip my toes.

Anyways, since I'm terrible with explanations, I'll let the calcs do the talking. At least you'll have an idea what it can do at minimum and what it can do more with investment:

Notes: I modified a Tsareena template because I am really invested in one kingly design (plus Umbremons was going on with Tsareena buffs when I started); these calcs do use a Grass/Poison typing, look it up yourself if you don't believe me.

Finally, why I went the conservative route. This is a Mini-Uber, so the lesser version of a uber. Eternatus is a 'box-art' legend in the loosest terms, and what's lower than that? The 'trio' or 'quartet' type of minor Legends, which typically go around 580 BST. I was tempted for the 550 BST, but that might be way too unserious to be considered.

Penalties: - 5 BSR for Spe > 124

My submission encourages a variety of sets through smart investment, an essential aspect of Eternatus being "do a lot of things but not at the same time". What immediately stands out here is the extremely high HP/low defenses combination, which rewards defensive sets that pick between physical and special bias with EV investment. 126 Speed is chosen to reliably outspeed Darkrai while still outspeeding Ogerpon formes with a neutral nature, leaving room for natures other than Timid. Specifically, Eternatus uses Modest on a few sets, and this is encouraged here as well. 125 SpA is low enough that 38 needs help with a boosting item to have real offensive pressure, but high enough that it can achieve some key 2HKOs with no investment on defensive sets.

The high HP/low defenses combination comes with the distinct advantage of selective investment like Eternatus and against niche stuff like Seismic Toss, but also with the disadvantages of reducing the healing from Giga Drain and Leech Seed while increasing the health lost from Pain Split Equilibra and Hatterene.

Ultimately, this spread argues that the stats should be in service of replicating Eternatus' function and sets, rather than the aesthetics of the raw numbers themselves.

Life Orb (Timid or Modest with 252 SpA/252 Spe)
My reasoning here is Life Orb should guarantee winning matchups by making up for the lackluster offenses. Timid guarantees or near-guarantees OHKOs against :Clefable: and :Chuggalong: while guaranteeing 2HKOs against non-ID :Zamazenta: and :Cresceidon:. Modest goes a step further in wallbreaking potential, and can be feasibly run given that you hit 351 raw Speed, which outspeeds Ogerpon-W. Key near-guaranteed OHKOs are on :Mollux: and :Kitsunoh:, while :Ting-Lu: is guaranteed 2HKOed after SR. Even against :Slowking-Galar: and :Obliteryx:, you have ~2/3rd chance of 2HKOing, which discourages them from switching in to force CAP38 out.

Physically Defensive (Timid/Modest with 252 Def/252 Spe, Heavy-Duty Boots/Leftovers/Rocky Helmet)
The key calculation this investment achieves is never being 2HKOed by Headlong Rush from :Great Tusk:, ensuring that even against a Speed Booster Energy Tusk you can come in and KO it or threaten it out. Other benchmarks include avoiding the 2HKO from 5 allies fainted :Kingambit:'s Sucker Punch while 2HKOing it back; avoiding the KO from :Hemogoblin:'s Flare Blitz; avoiding a 2HKO from Adamant :Dragonite:'s Ice Spinner; almost never being 2HKOed by :Revenankh:'s Poltergeist and never from +1 Shadow Claw. If more power is needed to enable stuff like Scorching Sands, a Modest nature can be used, as Eternatus does for its physdef set.
252 Atk :Great Tusk: Headlong Rush vs. 0 HP / 252 Def CAP38: 234-276 (41.8 - 49.3%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
0 SpA CAP38 Giga Drain vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD :Great Tusk:: 324-384 (87.3 - 103.5%) -- 25% chance to OHKO -> converted into OHKO if against +1 Spe Great Tusk, which is the dangerous one

Specially Defensive (Timid/Modest with 252 SpD/252 Spe, Heavy-Duty Boots/Leftovers)
This spread is built around surviving a 2HKO from a key outspeed in :Darkrai: while avoiding an OHKO from +2 Make It Rain from :Gholdengo:. While some super effective attacks still KO us reliably, like Choice Specs :Kyurem:'s Ice Beam, neutral hits have a difficult time breaking through, such as Draco Meteor from Specs :Dragapult: and Dragon Pulse from :Raging Bolt:.

129 speed allows the defensive set to do the silly thing defensive eternatus does with marshadow to darkrai/weavile, as it can drop 28 speed ev's and put them in HP to flip a few matchups. HP investment provides ~1% more bulk, but defensive investment is still more valuable because CAP 38 can pick and choose what pokemon it comes in on. Also every number is a multiple of 3. The main offensive draw of 126 is its ability to barely squeak OHKO's with super effective coverage on offensive threats, namely :cinderace:, :naviathan:, :chuggalong:, :kingambit:, and :gholdengo:.

There are a lot more calcs I could show but anything that seemed like too much of a gimme matchup or where the spA wasn't very relevant I didn't include. Also, I think that the penalty for 126 speed was too low, so I'm using the points I'm scamming out of speed on redundant fire coverage.

Having looked at the submitted spreads so far, they all seem extremely similar to me. I wanted to try to make something a bit different. Because CAP 38's ability is Flower Veil, I think that Speed is a bit less important to its game. Additionally, having Eternatus as your speed control is kind of bad in Ubers, so I definitely think that lower speeds are actually more reflective of how an Eternatus-lite would play in CAP. In CAP processes previously, I've usually been the one to really amp up Speed in my submissions. Here, I will look to do the opposite.

HP: 130
Atk: 71
Def: 75
SpA: 134
SpD: 79
Spe: 111
BST: 600

PS: 92.11
SS: 158.60
PT: 108.57
ST: 113.89
BSR: 669.69

This set seeks to use its natural bulk to tank hits and deal more damage back. The Special Attack allows CAP 38 to OHKO Hemogoblin without a Life Orb. The special bulk allows CAP 38 to withstand one Meteor Beam from Stratagem with no investment.

Assumed Moves: Grass STAB (Giga Drain / Energy Ball / Leaf Storm), Poison STAB (Sludge Bomb / Sludge Wave), Ground Coverage (Earth Power / Scorching Sands), Meteor Beam, Leech Seed, Toxic, 50% Recovery, Strong Fire Coverage (Flamethrower / Fire Blast), Universally Assumed Moves
Penalties: -10 BSR for Flamethrower / Fire Blast, -5 BSR for Speed > 124.

I built this spread around paying for strong Fire coverage with bulk instead of power. The threats list has Corviknight as a counter and Equilibra as a pressure, both only if 38 doesn't get Fire, so I wanted to get rid of both while keeping enough SpA for the Life Orb set to hit the benchmarks from Stat Limits.

126 Speed gives 386 with max Timid. This outspeeds Darkrai (383) and Cresceidon (381). 126 with a neutral nature gives 351, which still outspeeds max Speed base 110s, so Modest stays a real option for the wallbreaking set without losing that benchmark.

The Darkrai matchup is the main reason to go past 124. Neither side OHKOs the other from full, so turn order decides it: if 38 is slower, it takes Ice Beam, hits back, and is usually finished by Life Orb recoil plus the second hit before it can KO. If 38 is faster, it gets the first hit in and Darkrai is forced to trade or switch.

I kept 38 below Stratagem and well below Zamazenta. In the Stat Limits thread there was a good argument for Zamazenta keeping the option to revenge a Tera'd 38, and I agree with it. Outspeeding Stratagem also seemed like something the community wanted to cost more than -10 BSR.

With Life Orb, 126 SpA OHKOs Clefable and Hemogoblin and 2HKOs Kyurem, Darkrai and the bulky birds after Stealth Rock. Uninvested Sludge Bomb also 2HKOs Calm Mind Clefable through Leftovers, which Spammernoob brought up in Stat Limits and is nice for defensive sets that switch into Fairies.

On the Meteor Beam set, +1 Meteor Beam OHKOs the common Venomicon spread, so predicting the switch pays off. It also has a 25% chance to OHKO Obliteryx and 2HKOs physically defensive Corviknight.

I didn't push SpA higher since Fire already makes 38 hard to switch into. Modest Life Orb Earth Power is still only a 79.3% chance to 2HKO Slowking-Galar, and Life Orb Energy Ball only has a 5.9% chance to 2HKO Ting-Lu through Leftovers. Both can still check the special sets, and they're listed as answers in the threats list anyway.

38 should give teambuilders the choice of which side to invest in, like Eternatus does. With 105 HP and 87 / 87 defenses, investing in Def or SpD gives the same return. 38's HP stat is already a lot higher than its defenses, so defensive EVs are worth more than HP EVs. That's why Set 2 maxes Def before putting the rest in HP.

On the offensive set (Set 1), 38 survives one Headlong Rush from Great Tusk, one Psychic Fangs from Zamazenta, one Life Orb Ice Beam from Darkrai and one Specs Draco Meteor from Dragapult. It does not survive super effective hits from Kyurem, Tornadus-Therian, Deoxys-Speed, Iron Moth, Hemogoblin, or Obliteryx. Those are on the checks list, or are Pokemon that 38 outspeeds and OHKOs first (Iron Moth, Hemogoblin with Life Orb).

On the bulky set (Set 2) with Leftovers, Zamazenta Psychic Fangs, Headlong Rush and Black Glasses Kowtow Cleave all become 3HKOs, and Obliteryx, +1 Dragonite and Hemogoblin need two hits. Special attackers that hit it super effectively still OHKO it, so against Kyurem, Tornadus-Therian and Iron Moth this set depends on Speed and positioning.

Sets

Set 1, Offensive:
Timid, 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe (386 Speed). Life Orb or no item (Power Herb on Meteor Beam variants).
Set 2, Bulky: Timid, 128 HP / 252 Def / 128 Spe (352 Speed). Leftovers (Power Herb on Meteor Beam variants).

Set 2 uses only the Speed needed to outspeed max Speed base 110s (Ogerpon-Wellspring, Iron Moth, Kitsunoh at 350) and puts the rest into physical bulk. Physical bulk was chosen because most of the Pokémon that threaten 38 are physical (Zamazenta, Obliteryx, Dragonite). A Calm or SpD version is possible, but the special threats on the checks list (Kyurem, Tornadus-Therian, Deoxys-Speed) OHKO or nearly OHKO 38 regardless of investment.

Set 2 may also run Meteor Beam. With Power Herb it works as a surprise wallbreaker, and without it the bulk and Flower Veil let 38 take the charge turn against passive Pokemon like Corviknight, Equilibra and Slowking-Galar, similar to how bulky Eternatus uses slow setup. The +1 numbers are still lower than Set 1's.

Penalties: -20 BSR for Apple Acid, -5 BSR for Mystical Fire, -5 BSR for Speed > 124; cumulatively -30 BSR

Reasoning: There are a few similar stat lines that have already been shared with solid reasoning but the main difference here is forgoing some of the bulk to include apple acid and mystical fire. I thought this would help enable more variety in the teambuilder.

Sub is Legal, all values check out. Other than that I really would prefer to hear your reasonings for any decision given for the stat spread, as I'd rather know the reasoning behind a couple of your stat decisions rather than just leaving it out there, since it gives a better chance for understanding where you are coming from as well as possible improvements.

Also, Minor Nitpick and it really goes for everyone subbing, but you don't really need to list the assumed moves, those are assumed for a reason. What spreads should note is any penalties they have accumulated, if any. You can keep them for the final sub but should generally just note down if a penalty is taken place.

Your T-Value seems to be incorrect but doesn't push your sub into ilegal territory, and you have 589 bst instead of 590.

I can see this is still a work in progress so I won't comment on the reasonings yet but something to note, if your BSR is this low I assume you are taking some sort of penalty? Especially since's there mentions of wisp in the following comments. Please note exactly which penalties you are adquiring or if you aren't taking any penalties at all.

Thanks for noting down both your assumed spreads as well as your assumed moves and taken penalties, for what is worth I think you are doing a decent job for your first stat sub.

Some critcism I would note for the final submission (you can keep your sub as it is now with its current calcs since it cna help people point you in the right direction) is that usually a wall of calcs isn't very appealling. You should look to include at most just the ones that get the closest to the defensive and offensive limits of your spread as anything weaker will serve to know you can live already, as those will tell everyone exactly what your spread is actually looking to achieve, or if you want to keep all those calcs, make sure to highlight the most important ones.

Penalties: -10 BSR for Flamethrower/Fire Blast, -5 BSR for Mystical Fire, -5 BSR for Speed > 124; cumulatively -20 BSR
As a note, I believe that the penalty for 126 speed was too low, so I'm using the points I'm scamming out of speed on redundant fire coverage.
For what is worth, you didn't "scam" points out of speed. In fact, because of the addition of Mystical Fire, this spread is ilegal, as it surpases 650 BSR (651.51 to be specific). Pretty much all of the values for each limit are slightly off, which I think means that the calculation spreadsheet you are using might be outdated.

Second note to everybody: If you think you got a lot of extra points that you don't know how to spend and don't feel like either of your available options for optional moves will affect much, its a slightly move convinient solution to try and distribute those extra points somewhere in your offenses or bulk than grab something you think your spread doesn't need. That or just leave them out entirely, with perhaps someone else helping you to allocate those remaining points.

Spread is legal with all the values checking out, and so far its the spread with the steepest penalties applied to it, so it looks decently good. Optional Defining Moves: Mystical Fire

I find Stratagem to be an incredibly important matchup here; IMO this mon is basically the gatekeeper for whether or not you can slot on a normal balance team and count as a "fastmon" a la Zama/Pult. A lot of the 125-130 spe spreads fall into the Darkrai trap, where you sit in this really awkward space between being fast but also being unable to fulfill the role of primary speed control because you're unable to revenge the best mon on opposing offense teams. This is only my personal belief, but as I see the metagame right now, I think there will be a massive difference in this mon's usage if we are 125-129 vs 131+ speed. (Lower speed spreads don't fall into the same trap of being fast-but-not-fast-enough; I think a spread like dex's would be quite strong too.)

127 SpA OHKOs Stratagem with Giga Drain without Life Orb, useful if you've either been knocked off or are running a meteor beam set.

HP is always a bit arbitrary, so I chose 131 because it matches the speed. 81 defense hits a couple of Great Tusk benchmarks; for one, it survives Proto-boosted spin into tera ground headlong rush with a defensive spread that creeps Oger, maxes out defense, and dumps remaining EVs into HP. It also allows Timid 252 def/252 spe spreads to survive two headlong rushes with leftovers. 64 SpD maxes out the BSR.

Defensive spread: 168 HP / 252 Def / 88+ Spe
252 Atk Protosynthesis Great Tusk Rapid Spin vs. 168 HP / 252 Def Roserade: 65-77 (14.6 - 17.3%) -- possible 6HKO (Max roll = 77HP)
252 Atk Protosynthesis Tera Ground Great Tusk Headlong Rush vs. 168 HP / 252 Def Roserade: 310-366 (69.6 - 82.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO (Max roll 366 HP)
77+366 = 443 (Our max HP is 445)

Defensive spread: 252 Def / 252+ Spe
252 Atk Great Tusk Headlong Rush vs. 0 HP / 252 Def Roserade: 178-211 (44.1 - 52.3%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

Offensive spread: 252 SpA / 252+ Spe (unboosted)
252 SpA Roserade Giga Drain vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Stratagem: 324-384 (100.9 - 119.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Penalties: -5 for Mystical Fire, -10 for Speed for a BSR limit of 655

Reasoning: I'm taking on the Speed penalty to lean into the decision between Modest/Timid when teambuilding for the sake of additional set variety. I didn't go all the way to the next benchmark specifically so that Modest spreads would underspeed base 120 (neutral nature 138 would tie with +speed nature 121).

Mystical Fire being weaker than the other fire moves means that some thresholds against Equilibra take more commitment to reach / have more opportunity cost.
252 SpA Life Orb CAP38 Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Equilibra: 195-231 (47.7 - 56.6%) -- 32.8% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Life Orb CAP38 Flamethrower vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Equilibra: 161-190 (39.4 - 46.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Life Orb CAP38 Mystical Fire vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Equilibra: 133-159 (32.5 - 38.9%) -- 5.6% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

252 SpA Life Orb Tera Fire CAP38 Flamethrower vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Equilibra: 242-283 (59.3 - 69.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ SpA Life Orb Tera Fire Eternatus Mystical Fire vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Equilibra: 218-260 (53.4 - 63.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Life Orb Tera Fire CAP38 Mystical Fire vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Equilibra: 198-237 (48.5 - 58%) -- 53.5% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Pain Split complicates the situation, but looking at Tera Fire the stronger fire moves can still 2HKO with a pain split in between the two hits.

Min roll Flamethrower deals 242 and takes Equilibra from 408 -> 166 HP, life orb chip brings CAP38 from 375 -> 338
Pain Split restores 86 health for Equi, leftovers heals another 25, leaving it at 277 HP at the end of the turn and is a 12.5% chance to KO on the next turn. Any chip on either side makes it more likely for Equilibra to get knocked out.

The lower power means that Modest Mystical Fire is easier to tank than Timid Flamethrower.
Max roll deals 260 and brings Equi down to 148, pain split and leftovers bring it back up to 268 to barely live another max roll.

This is the main matchup where the difference between the fire coverage options is significant, and with the amount of extra commitment offensive sets would need, Mystical Fire ends up benefiting defensive sets more by mitigating the damage Equilibra can deal.

The bulk simply takes up the remaining BSR, with a ratio where 248 HP evs is a slightly better overall bulk increase than 124 in each Defense. Both spoo and dex brought up benchmarks that make slight bias to one side or the other appealing, so I might edit this part later.

As for the 612 BST, I was originally planning on 600 BST but decided it would be funny if it had a unique BST number like Eternatus does, so I fiddled with Attack to avoid messing up the BSR. If this is deemed unacceptable, then remove 12 Attack to bring it back down to earth. Or maybe 11 Atk and 1 Speed to put them at multiples of 5.

Both versions of the spread seek to stand out by maximizing CAP38's Special Attack while maintaining a high Speed stat (albeit it only gets past Tornadus-Therian), with the goal being to incentivize defensive sets while making sure they are not too passive. The inclusion of Mystical Fire is to make the match-ups of defensive sets against Equilibra and Gholdengo better without allowing offensive sets to go completely unga bunga. The idea is for any defensive set to be running Sludge Bomb/Mystical Fire/Leech Seed/Recover. What I am struggling to decide is whether to lean towards physical bulk (which makes defensive match-ups against the likes of Woger and Great Tusk easier) or special bulk (which improves CAP38 against Gholdengo and Tornadus-Therian). I've been staring at my spreads for two hours running a bunch of calcs, but I need to get the actual spreads posted as WIPs so I can stop looking at it for a while LMAO. If there's anyone with specific thoughts as to what version makes more sense (or if I should try to have more even bulk, though I do sorta like the lopsided approach and think the aesthetics of my spread are super good lol), please let me know either in the thread or in the Discord.

No bells or whistles with this one, just plain ol' numbers. My other WIP spread was 96% identical to spoo's so I've pivoted to something a bit different from other submitted spreads. Started with >Strata speed tier and worked backward from there. Wanted to leave an intentional defensive "hole" to lean away from becoming Sonic the Unkillable Death Lord of Murder Mountain. Chose SpDef as the dump defense since most stronger resisted moves 38 wants to switch into on the Special side are lower in overall power than physical. Sweepiness started at finding the SpA floor I wanted to work around (128) and tweak until I got something functional and aesthetically pleasing.

Traditional calc splurge (huge WIP, will edit in when I'm not in danger of losing electricity):
