why :(

The music is so upbeat but the lyrics are so sad.

It is like, this guy wants to sign on to the record company, but his wife is afraid he'll be a "sell out" and doesn't want him to do it. She doesn't want him to get involved with that celebrity culture and maybe get into drugs and ruin his life.

Right now, their life is terrible and he is working fast food. He wants to amount to something though. "I can't work at fast food all my life" so he wants to become a famous musician. But she doesn't want him to for the reasons above.

But their life is shit and he is desperate. He thinks once he signs on "the record company's gonna give me lots of money and everything's gonna be alright" so their life is totally shit but he believes once he signs on, he'll be able to make a good life for him and his wife

But of course his wife keeps warning him not to sign on because that shit will ruin him, but he is desperate. The way he keeps repeating "the record company's gonna give me lots of money and everything's gonna be alright" throughout the song, over and over, makes it seem like he himself knows his wife is right, and he is trying to convince HIMSELF that it will fix their problems

and the lyric "but it's too late" at the beginning of the song shows that it's a forgone conclusion. Perhaps he knew he shouldn't have "sold out" and is trying to convince himself that it was for the best. And the ending of the song, the last two lines have no music to them and are considerably sadder. This whole song just seems like a big story of regret to me

it reminds me a lot (the meaning at least) of the song "Lost in Hollywood" by System of a Down, you should check it out!

You might be thinking too far into it! Iirc it was just written to mock the act of paying to get on the radio. I'd like to think that in the end they both accept that they're going to sell out and they're going to get ruined, but they'll ride out the storm together!

You're definitely reading too much into "it's too late". I don't think it means it's too late for their relationship, but it's too late to not sell out.

I never said they were ending their relationship, I meant it was too late to not sell out. In fact I agree with you D:
