deutschland and dutch both come from a root that basically means "of the <common> people" and has shifted its more specific meaning a lot throughout the ages and apparently worked fine in both contexts... the dutch word for ancient dutch is "diets" and used the same root, so there's another one :]
and "netherlands" literally means "low lands" (think also "netherworld") because p. much the entire western and northern halfs are below sea level, ya get the picture
