it has flaws (mostly wrt its characters + how they led up to kaminas death) but I still love it. it is the zenith of epicness in mecha anime

Weeeeeeeeeeeellllllllll..... as someone who has dedicated a good chunk of his life watching old school mecha, I can honestly attest to how it just doesn't add up to any of the atmosphere I got from gurren lagann. Sure it has a good deal of references (how lagann is literally a walking Hover Pilder from Mazinger Z) but it just doesn't feel like the 'hot blooded teenager / kid gets to pilot super robot with a slew of random tools' feel from the other shows

It's prolly more because of the focus on character development ttgl has, but then again, my opinion here

yah it definitely feels different (which personally I enjoyed) from like clips of the old stuff. I guess I just meant it went larger than any other mecha anime out there, which I can admire
