It's a particularly bad, boring drum line specifically because it not only has no variety (unlike stuff good drummers do, for example the killers) but it is also just under the BPM of walking speed, which I think is a really REALLY frustratingly LOW speed for a "rock" song

if your "band" goes totally silent for your singer to sing his "carefully crafted" and "meaningful" lyrics, then ur song already fails musically because it's trying to appeal to both 'intellectual' pppl through poetry and 'basic' people through "cool-sounding" basic chords and music

Having different levels of instrumentation is good but you've got to build to certain portions; its more than simply just being verse=singing with quiet instruments and chorus=repetitive but quiet vocals with the band playing
