isn't that the point?

There's plenty of konys out there, but nobody cares. Nobody would care unless invisible children didn't decide to run a moneymaking scheme. It makes you think.

Hulavuta
Yeah it does. It's hard to care for people you never meet and never see the fruits of your efforts. On the other hand do you feel there is a moral priority to help those who are in a worse condition than you, even though we all have our own problems. It's something hard to quantify, when you think of it, nobody's problems are equal. So where do you draw the line on priority?
GatoDelFuego
GatoDelFuego
That's why it's easy for a cynical person like me: nobody matters except me. That way I never feel guilty to care about anybody
Hulavuta

but you have people you care about right
GatoDelFuego
GatoDelFuego
of course, but if I had to choose between them and me I pick me

you sound a lot like the Joker right now. I guess a lot of people feel the same but how have people responded if you straight up tell them that?

Most people don't care to ask, do they? Yeah, I'm like the joker I guess. I would wager that most people are really like this deep down in their heart, only I'm not going to play pretend and act like I'm a "real good person". I'm not gonna save the people in the trolley problem cause it isn't my concern. I'm not going to feel guilty about the starving ppl in africa because imo you're hypocritical if you "spread awareness" without doing anything, and we all benefit in some way from foreign slave labor. Anybody who pretends to care is getting paid somehow

I believe in moral guiding principles, and I hate being a hypocrite. So if you feel a moral obligation to help one crowd of people but not another, I think that's hypocritical and goes against my beliefs. Or if you give up 10% of your wealth to the poor, why not give 20%? We're all selfish, and the one definitive point where I can draw a line is to do nothing. I may be a horrible human being but at least I'm not subjectively treating ppl different in different situations

To be fair I do believe it when people say they will die for their children or something like that.

Isn't the idea of helping people that you personally choose to focus on a certain group or problem, and then encourage others to focus on other problems? Nobody has enough time to do everything. If you mean wishing ill on another group, then I agree with that.

Honestly I find this situation somewhat contradictory because by nature saying that you don't care because you are not good is a justification of why not caring is good. And I don't think you can universalize not being good but also selectively caring about certain people close to you, by your own logic.

As for the trolley problem, what would you do if you could just throw the switch and nobody would die at all? Would you do that? Genuine question not a rhetorical one

if nobody dies then I'd do it, but if I DIDN'T do it I don't believe it to be my fault that they died
