Their philosophy is about rule of the strongest. So they're ok with getting killed by their apprentice as long as they're stronger. Because eventually they want to be strong enough to rule the galaxy and not need to train to get smarter. Palpatine pretty much reached this point where he didn't really need an apprentice and has so many backup plans for immortality

I get the philosophy but I don't see the Sith thinking in long-term goals like that; most of them are pretty selfish
