Steels are not always mandatory, but given how great they are offensively and defensively against fairy, ice, and so many other types, I almost never see a good balance team without a Steel. That being said, not strictly mandatory in my opinion at least.

thanks! I was also wondering on what you thought counted as a knock absorber. I've been building bulky balance lately and gliscor is an obvious choice but essentially every good knock user is able to force it out.
