Alright, I don't have an AR, so you'll have to ask someone else to help you find your SID - personally I asked The Giritina-man. Also, as I'm pretty new to this too you're going to have to hold up with me if it takes a while to go through.
In response to your question, yes, an AR is needed to find your SID, I can give you a quick walkthrough for HG/SS shiny / IV abuse if you want, if you're interested, give me your msn or something; I'm not going to do it through VMs.
