hello chat, it's time for PL IX's edition of the:
1v1 Draft Gambling Competition!
i do not condone gambling in any way, shape, or form, OP stolen from stravench.
this year, it will be hosted by me, myself, and i (also prunyy). anyone who gets it exactly right will obtain the great price of bragging rights for all eternity as well as 1 team for every generation in PL (courtesy of me)
rules are simple: try to guess your price in the draft! send your guesses to me in PMs either on smogon, discord (bern_4) or PS!. If your price is predetermined, be it a retain or self-bought manager, you can't play, cuz it's like cheating y'know.
once the draft is done with, i'll compile all of the results and everyone shall know how wrong (or right even) you were!
here are some other rules you should read if you're planning on submitting:
- submissions will close when draft begins.
- please include your smogon username if your discord or PS! username doesn't match it.
- minimum guess is 3k, reminder to use intervals of 500/.5k (don't PM me a price lower than 3k, otherwise your prediction will be invalid).
- all entrants must be enthusiastic about playing in 1v1 PL IX (don't PM me undrafted as your prediction, i will count it as invalid).
- if you wanna PM me or prunyy in PS! but neither is online, use the /offlinemsg command to do so.
- most important of all, have fun!

8. RPS Rhyperiors self bought Elo Bandit for 16k and retained dreepy for 10k and Here Comes Team Charm! for 16.5k. Their total budget is now 100k - 16k - 10k - 16.5k =57.5k
The RPS Bleeperiors have continued to instill their PL legacy with another retain, albeit I think this one seems to be a little more question mark than the rest. Let’s dig into why:
Elo Bandit for 16k: Dr YouTuber Bandito GSC/RBY/whatever connoisseur continues to stay locked in on SM and with past records always showing positive (5-0 OGPL2, decently positive OGPL3/PL 8) this is on paper fine. The slight caveat being that you’re paying 16.5k for a BO5 tier and while I know murmurs from other SM mains I know don’t really follow his way of building, this is on paper at least going to be pretty par or save you a slight bit of money.
HCTC for 16.5k: It seems someone’s been cyberstalking my analysis on the SS7 pool
since I did correctly assume that zo/rtm/blanched/hctc would go between rhyps thwackeys pults and horrors respectively. This makes sense and is probbaly going to be the team’s cheapest option, but with the likes of glitched/luser/presumably close being both in more touch with the meta and retained I feel like HCTC could have been let slip to auction and they could have spent more effort in securing something else…? I’m just not sure if I see someone who hasn’t played since last PL (iirc?) to go for this price even if the ss7 pool is diminishing, as it lessens room for your other tiers. This seems like a slight overpay to me.
Dreepy (10k). I’m unsure about this one. The RPS Bleeperiors have continued to instill their PL legacy with another retain, albeit I think this one seems to be a little more question mark than the rest. Let’s dig into why:
Elo Bandit for 16k: Dr YouTuber Bandito GSC/RBY/whatever connoisseur continues to stay locked in on SM and with past records always showing positive (5-0 OGPL2, decently positive OGPL3/PL 8) this is on paper fine. The slight caveat being that you’re paying 16.5k for a BO5 tier and while I know murmurs from other SM mains I know don’t really follow his way of building, this is on paper at least going to be pretty par or save you a slight bit of money.
HCTC for 16.5k: It seems someone’s been cyberstalking my analysis on the SS7 pool
since I did correctly assume that zo/rtm/blanched/hctc would go between rhyps thwackeys pults and horrors respectively. This makes sense and is probbaly going to be the team’s cheapest option, but with the likes of glitched/luser/presumably close being both in more touch with the meta and retained I feel like HCTC could have been let slip to auction and they could have spent more effort in securing something else…? I’m just not sure if I see someone who hasn’t played since last PL (iirc?) to go for this price even if the ss7 pool is diminishing, as it lessens room for your other tiers. - indi/stravench go to SV7 and SS7, be on bottom half of the pool and accept you have no tiebreak clutch, then you beef up every other slot to be self sufficient

4. Metro Boomin' Megarays self bought neomon for 12.5k and retained luser for 16.5k and torterraxx for 12k. Their total budget is now 100k - 12.5k - 16.5k - 12k = 59k.

After getting a 11k steal on drip last time allowing them to get core star players such as waylaid (negative) blanched (used moltres and golem alola in some irrelevant tournament) and James (unironic failed upbid) yet winning anyway, this time the thwackeys on taking their chances via drippy~ at 19.5k and radu at 18k
Let’s be fair - both of these are probably top 5 players you can get so this is incredibly good value. The problem stems from the fact that they need to spend a bit giga in SS (only not super expensive SS7 in pool - firstly drip and rtm have each other blocked LOL and blanched will go for 25k and be a hyperspace horror, and like I said if I were zo i accepted my pults retain a week ago) and if RADU is unmotivated (which rumors circling around tends to be…!) then they may need to fork over. Still, two guaranteed positive players r not bad especially with RADU’s luck of the divine allowing him to hax every relevant series despite what he says .

litteneleven has used his tactical advantage of flopping last PL to go 10k lol? but considering the guy goes like x-1 every ogpl u can’t really say this is on par since he always plays the same tiers + had understandable multiple disasters last PL with kaif’s country literally losing internet for a week + i heard apac did not gaf last wcop. this is something with huge upside where he can easily get away with at least even
for the rest of the retains both are maybe a bit closer to par imo.
im actually not high on others as glitched is in ss7 but considering the pool i think this buy will be at least par. from what ive heard of glitched they seem motivated and nice but huuugely momentum based. like tilt a week and then want to log off discord after a loss kind of tilt. still, 15k for 3-4th best player range in ss7 + into probably being able to support a cheap ss5 isn’t bad + they can probably use money to spend on whatever 5 they want ala the luser retain let rays accomplished.

- bbb - the simple truth of the matter is that close is the best ss player in the pool and needed to selfbuy. thats this teams greatest asset and while like, if playing is misery-inducing or something its fine to not selfbuy but then im confused as to why you would sign up to manage. maybe gorilla or a new blood can hold down the fort. i don't think close has ever hard supported another slot in the time i have played but i think hed be capable of it. i don't think this decision ruins the teams chances or anything but it just doesnt make sense to me.
- horrors - sometimes sheet lies, sometimes the quality of a players most egregious games lie, they rarely lie at the same time.
- RPS - hctc is the best buyable ss player in the pool for their own individual slot. lack of Modern Meta Knowledge relative to a sweat like rtm isnt that important since rps don't really buy people to hard solocarry another slot historically. this is a pretty great retain in the context of rps team infrastructure. dreepy retain is unfortunately pretty grief, they might very well perform again for all i know and seem to work better in rps but dreepy was simply never going to go for more than 10k (even in this climate).
- heatrans - t_rex emoji. they both probably go slightly positive, neither of these retains bring the heatrans any closer to having a broken roster.
- thwackeys - don't ask me about my opinion on either of these players. hmph!
- dragapults - tbh krys been putting up numbers and this is one of their roster-defining purchases from the way lumii talks about him so 16k for that is amazing. if i had a gun to my head and had to rate kry id still say "ymmv" /shrug but i think this team has so much power that they can naturally elevate mid decisions (this retain would look a lot worse on the heatrans for example).
- rays - 16.5k for third manager luser is great, he seems to have a good idea on what needs to be done for the draft and will at least support ss2. if he bosses up and learns sm or something this could easily be a tour winner. rest of the retains bring rays no closer or farther to having a broken roster.
- panchams - 10k litt is on the same tier of egregious as drips price last year. this formula does not work.
One last thought: zo is woat for not taking their retain. if you are planning to buy them and are not planning on going fifth seed, don't bother. they deserve everything they will suffer ^_^

1v1 PL IX Pre-Draft Manager PRs
Overall I think that this manager pool is quite strong and no team is leagues ahead of the others. I look forward to seeing how the teams develop and how inevitably wrong I am. Some closing remarks for next year’s PL I think a couple things are quite obvious. For one this manager formula does not seem to achieve what it sets out to do. Namely I believe it unnecessarily hurts cheaper managers by setting the baseline to 10k, this feels like a simple fix. Furthermore, I believe it benefits expensive players too much, namely by limiting it to 2k per win you end up in scenarios where for example a 23k player who gets 5 wins is somehow cheaper than their original 23k price which feels incorrect. I believe that considering all but 2 teams decided to not self buy both managers there is ample room for 1v1 to encourage solo managing and thus ban manager buys. Potentially I would also be in favor of an intermediate step where we cap the number of players going into auction at 2, specifically one manager and one retain maximum.
This took much longer than expected, if I made any mistakes I apologize in advance.
Unsurprisingly the Dragapults take first with the best retain pool going into the draft paired with one of the stronger manager pairs it is clear that Dragapults were well positioned going into the draft. Not self buying delemon, even though her price was an underpay, I do believe to be the correct decision. Allowing delemon to focus solely on support allows for a strong sv core while allowing the Dragapults to avoid entering the draft with very little leverage. Lumii makes sense to self buy with an underpriced self buy price that doesn’t break the bank while also being a valuable sv7 slot. Lumii can additionally leverage her skills in BW if needed and Dragapults decide to gamble with a cheaper SV7 slot. Finally, retaining Krytocon is what brings the team together. In an SM pool which is historically weak having one of the top SM players guaranteed on your team brings a lot of security in drafting. One thing of note is the lack of a Zo retain. This significantly brings the Dragapults down from an outright broken team pre-draft to still number one but much more reasonable. It’s possible that Zo declined the retain or there were worries about team chemistry but even entering the draft with 56k would not be unreasonable when Dragapults would have had 2-3 of the most expensive slots guaranteed. Overall, a strong contender to win the entire tournament Dragapults most likely have their eyes set on a strong ORAS player and SS builders while picking up cheap SV and BW players as otherwise Delemon may be stretched out too thin building for all of SV and SS.
Litt reprises his role as Pancham’s captain with the assistance of managing newcomer Glitched to take second place. Litt embodies one of the fundamental flaws with the manager pricing formula better than anyone else except potentially RTM. Starting off with a 10k Litt gives Panchams a lot of flexibility going into the draft as Litt’s proficiency in ORAS, BW, and SM gives Panchams a lot of options to go in. Paired with a 15.5k Glitched which albeit slightly on the expensive side gives Panchams a lot of security by giving a strong SS7 slot. Finally, retaining bea for an appropriate price gives Panchams a bit more of a foot into SV which they otherwise may not be as prepared for. Bea’s strong SV5 performances as well as SM competency allows for more flexibility giving Panchams a deceptively unpredictable draft plan. However the lack of a clear SV7 player may force Panchams to enter into a bidding war for an established SV7 player unless bea decides to take up the mantle which may hurt their price advantage. Finally, it is worth noting that of all the teams that enter the draft with 3 players Panchams have the most available cash which gives them a slight advantage enabling them a more focused game plan for the draft. Overall, Panchams use their on rate retains with an incredibly underpriced Litt to shoot them up to second place.
Potentially a controversial pick the SEU duo of Close and Lialiabeast deciding to not retain or self buy anybody gives them a huge spending advantage going into the draft. This is of course not without its downsides: giving up on a Close self buy even for a non-insignificant 23k denies Skewdas the ability to have one of the strongest SM players in the pool whose flexibility is additionally unmatched. However taking advantage of Close’s multigen capabilities gives Skewdas the ability to rival a Delemon support role or even a PLVIII Radu support role in its effectiveness. The lack of a Lialiabeast self buy I do believe to be a slight mistake. Off of a recent Classic win a 10k Lialiabeast is a pretty big steal and I personally am not aware of Lia’s performance in a supporting role but even with this misstep I believe Skewdas maintain a sizable advantage going into the draft even if it’s an unorthodox manner. Skewdas lack of valuable retains made Skewdas one of the less desirable teams going into the draft but Close and Lialiabeast surprise with a top 3 ranking. In terms of the draft itself Skewdas will need to utilize their 100k wisely to bully picks and throw off other team’s draft plans and will want to compete on big targets such as Blanched, RTM, and Waylaid. There is a risk with this money advantage in both directions; Skewdas may act too passively in utilizing their spending advantage and fail to acquire the expensive players necessary to complete their roster, additionally requiring to draft an entire team means that miscalculations on individual prices may stack up and counter intuitively result in Skewdas feeling as if they lack sufficient funds to complete their goal. This is in my opinion one of the most interesting decisions going into the draft and I am excited to see the results.
Another potentially controversial ranking but the reigning champions Drip and Radu round up the top half of the rankings. While by no means a weak team Thwackeys lack many of the advantages that helped them secure their PL win last year. First and foremost, Drip’s incredibly underpriced self buy from last year does not translate over with spending 19.5k for Drip being much more in line with his value. That isn’t to say that it was wrong to self buy, it still makes a lot of sense to do so. Drip is relatively forced into sv7 this year but being most likely the strongest sv7 player or second strongest going in makes this price warranted and expensive but nonetheless correct. Radu on the other hand while unarguably a strong player and worthy of that price tag nonetheless prevents Radu from taking up the supporter role once again. Paired up with potentially less activity makes Thwackeys nowhere near as well positioned as they were last year. While I do think self buying Radu is incorrect I don’t think this is as major of an issue as expecting a manager to essentially no-life for 2 years in a row might be optimal but it is understandable wanting to play. Additionally, you aren’t trading in a supporter role for a middle of the pack player as Radu is very strong but for an 18k price tag it is not an underpay in my eyes. Finally, the lack of valuable retains fail to make up the spending difference that self buying both Radu and Drip puts the Thwackeys in. Overall, Thwackeys are a strong team but lack the unfairness of their previous year as well as some other teams ahead of them. Thwackeys will most likely look to draft a top SS7 player who can also help with SS5 as well as a strong SM player while rounding up the rest of the slots with cheaper players which as a strategy did give them a ring so by no means are they out of contention.
Neomon and Dez take over the Megarays legacy with big shoes to fill left over by DEG’s absence. Just missing out of the top 4, Neomon does a lot of things right. For starters, the neomon self buy for 12.5k is a good steal even with Neomon’s slightly underwhelming performances as of late. If Neomon decides to play sv7 Megarays will not have to worry about that slot and that’s the direction I expect they’ll go in. However, I believe what may actually be more worthwhile is for Neomon to go to BW and draft an SV7 player or help support an SV5 player to start SV7. This gives the team some much needed flexibility considering the next retains. Luser while only playing ss is a good retain for a slightly pricy 16.5k however considering the SS7 pool this seems to be a likely underpay and an overall strong retain. Torterrax for 12k seems to be an about average retain if not a bit expensive. Being limited to ORAS means that an underwhelming performance may end up turning around to bite Neomon. Dez in theory can help with ORAS but Dez’s availability may turn this team into feeling like a Neomon solo job. While this team has a lot of positives, entering the draft with one of the lower cash amounts as well as the potential unreliability of some of the self buys/retains means that this team has a large range in how they perform. Notably, it may be difficult to draft the necessary SV players + self sufficient SS player if luser is unable to carry both slots as well as an SM slot but a good draft can propel this team up the rankings making it a real playoff contender.
Rhyperiors claim the title of least amount available going into the draft but spending that much money may not be warranted. Starting off with the lack of a Murm buy I think this was a great decision. Murm’s self buy price being on the expensive side while also generally being limited to SV means that spending that amount of money wouldn’t be warranted. However, what you get in support is immense as Murm has always been an active participant in every slot and having that level of dedication is a positive for the Rhyperiors. However, from here on out the missteps begin to follow one after another. Starting off with Elo Bandit self buy, having an SM slot is incredibly valuable this PL but spending 16k on a player who will end up most likely very slightly positive to negative is not where you want to start off with the team. I believe the smarter decision was utilizing both Murm’s and Bandit’s support capabilities to get a cheap SM player and get wins that way. Following up on this dreepy is by no means a bad player, and for 10k BW is worth considering however I do believe they could have got Dreepy for less in draft. I would have opposed this less if Rhyperiors weren’t entering the draft with as little money as they are and thus they should be looking to save money wherever possible. Finally, HCTC for 16.5k while is an SS7 slot is too expensive considering their lack of playing since essentially last PL. While each individual decision is not that bad combined I believe this hurts Rhyperiors prospect of not ending up with a team lacking strong SV slots with some glaring holes in other tiers. However, if Murm exceeds expectations then Rhyperiors might be able to utilize one of their secret strengths of a strong team environment.
Stravench returns to manage Heatrans paired with Frostyicelad to take another swing with this seemingly cursed franchise. On the surface Heatrans have a lot going for them, 10k Stravench and 13k Indi are both relatively good retains while not breaking the bank giving Heatrans some solid cash to work with in the draft. Covering SV7 and SS7 if Stravench decides to play SS are some pretty big slots to fill for only 23k and Stravench can also help in BW as well. The players themselves are both above average and are capable of getting enough wins to make their price worth it. However, this is where the main issue with the Heatrans itself presents itself, its managers. While as a player Stravench is a strong player his managing skills have not be as fleshed out as one would like. To me this is seen with the decision to not retain Mubs. Not spending 13k for a top 1 ORAS player seems to be a huge missed opportunity. Furthermore, Frostyicelad’s availability brings into question if this will be a solo Stravench managing job. Combined with a pool of other seasoned managers Stravench may not be able to take advantage of their strong player start, however if Stravench steps up to the challenge and is able to not be too passive then the Heatrans become much more threatening. Stravench’s flexibility in slotting gives him a lot of directions to take the draft in and I hope that he will surprise me.
Last but not least Horrors take up the last seed in the rankings. First the good, both Felucia and Lost Heros have managed together in the past and clearly seem to enjoy doing so. This gives them the advantage of being able to promote an enjoyable team environment for their players. However, this also is part of where their troubles arise from. One of the most damning aspects of the team is the perception of a lack of competitiveness and a lack of competitive spirit. This can breed resentment from some members who feel that the team isn’t taking the competition seriously thus reducing motivation. Additionally, even ignoring this perception, the team itself struggles to have the depth in its managers that one would want. Namely, between Felucia and Lost Heros there seems to be mostly a focus on SM and SV. While SM is valuable spending 11k on Felucia runs into similar problems as mentioned in Rhyperiors where they could have most likely gotten more value by having Felucia build for a cheap SM but even this is questionable as Felucia’s unorthodox teams may not be intuitive for a cheaper SM to pilot. Furthermore, 12k for Happysh while not horrible may be a bit more than they would cost in draft. Finally, lost heros not self buying is an interesting decision. If he intends to help all the SV slots they may be able to avoid buying a dedicated SV7 player and instead look to have an SV5 player move up. This save in money combined with the relatively high starting 77k may allow them to afford top notch old gen players. The biggest worry remains how will the players motivation align with that of the managers.
Overall I think that this manager pool is quite strong and no team is leagues ahead of the others. I look forward to seeing how the teams develop and how inevitably wrong I am. Some closing remarks for next year’s PL I think a couple things are quite obvious. For one this manager formula does not seem to achieve what it sets out to do. Namely I believe it unnecessarily hurts cheaper managers by setting the baseline to 10k, this feels like a simple fix. Furthermore, I believe it benefits expensive players too much, namely by limiting it to 2k per win you end up in scenarios where for example a 23k player who gets 5 wins is somehow cheaper than their original 23k price which feels incorrect. I believe that considering all but 2 teams decided to not self buy both managers there is ample room for 1v1 to encourage solo managing and thus ban manager buys. Potentially I would also be in favor of an intermediate step where we cap the number of players going into auction at 2, specifically one manager and one retain maximum.
