we could try focusing on clearing small groups of people at a time

like you say: "is there an NOC-sided player in: player a, player b, player c, player d"

The thing is, now that you have claimed there is a strong chance the question askers either die or are roleblocked if you are town

Do it Truth style. Put two players up, one from your list and another you Townread and then ask if they share an alignment.
