Welcome to the first edition of The NeverUsed Homefield Advantage. This tournament will be included in the 2021 NU Tournament Circuit! Players will sign up with a generation of their choice for a Bo3 single-elimination tournament, with the first game locked to SS NU. The loser of that game will then play their opponent in the generation they signed up with immediately, giving them a homefield advantage. The host of this tournament is roxiee, do not hesitate if you have any questions. $50 has been added as a prize for the winner of this tournament!
Tournament-Specific Rules

The home player can choose from one of the following tiers to be played: USUM NU, ORAS NU, BW2 NU, DPP NU, ADV NU, and GSC NU. Your generation of choice is locked starting from round 1, meaning you cannot change it from round to round, make sure to choose wisely!
  • This tournament will be Single Elimination.
  • All rounds will be Best of Three. You may switch teams in between battles of the same set.
  • Matches are to be played on Pokemon Showdown!, preferably on the smogtours server.
  • General tournament rules and clauses apply.
  • Smogon-Wide Clauses still apply.
  • Replays aren’t required until later rounds.
  • Any tier changes that occur after this post will not affect this tournament.
Standard Rules and Clauses
  • Species Clause: A player cannot have two Pokemon with the same PokeDex number on his team.
  • Evasion Clause: The moves Double Team and Minimize are banned. (No other evasion boosting things are banned).
  • OHKO Clause: The moves Horn Drill, Guillotine, Sheer Cold, and Fissure are banned.
  • Endless Battle Clause: Anything capable of intentionally creating an endless battle is banned.
  • Sleep Clause
Identity

About playing on alts: It is entirely allowed to play on an alt other than your own main forum name, though if your opponent wishes to confirm your identity, you must log on to your main alt to show them you are who you claim to be. This is to prevent people from pretending to be who they're not.

About playing on different servers: The matches must be played on either the Smogtours server or the Main PS! server if both parties agree to that. Other servers are not sanctioned by the host(s) and playing in them might result in your game not counting. Protect yourself from that by playing on Smogtours.

Scouting

On scouting opponents: Going through your opponents replays of tournament and ladder games is entirely allowed, as long as a game is public there is nothing preventing you from watching it. An exception to this is abusing powers granted to you by being staff on Smogon or PS! to gain access to information a normal user wouldn't have access to, which is strictly forbidden.

On leaking teams: Divulging private information about someone's planned team to their opponent is never allowed, and will be heavily sanctioned. Requesting that such information be divulged is also grounds for punishment. Keep your scouting to publicly available information and you'll be fine.

Timer Clause / Disconnections

Timer Clause: As for taking long between moves, if your opponent asks you to hurry up, please oblige. If you are doing a damage calc for a key turn that is one thing, but prolonging every move is suspicious and annoying. Don't do it. Furthermore, Battle Timeout is a rule for a reason. If you run out of time, you lose, simple as that. It does not matter what your opponent says. Do not battle if you think you will have to leave mid battle, and instead reschedule for a better time.

Disconnections: Finally, in the case of a disconnect, the decision is in the hands of the player who did not disconnect. The options are: redo the battle move for move, redo the battle with the same teams but different moves, or redo the battle with completely different teams. If the battle was without a doubt over, they may also take the win. Any suspicion that a disconnect was committed on purpose to redo a match may be appealed to me, and if I feel this happened there will be severe consequences, don't do it.

Scheduling

Use VMs to schedule with your opponent to make it easier for me to track activity calls when needed, and use this guide to ensure you don't lose via activity or coinflip. If you use other methods to contact your opponent outside of VMs, then post in this thread confirming you're in contact with your opponent; otherwise, it's not necessary. Extensions for those with time conflicts will only be given when proof is provided of scheduling with their opponent in the beginning of the round, so do not schedule last minute expecting to be compensated in case of timezone conflicts or be given an activity win over your opponent.

I know that was a lot to read, but it is all necessary for me to have posted here so everyone can see it in the case of a dispute. I don't want any confusion or any problems.

Lost SS NU (didn't save replay oops), won GSC NU, and won USUM NU vs Maple, ggs.

I'm grateful to my opponents for being tough competition and the polar opposite of johns, pretty unheard of to complete two round robin series in like 48 hours.

My experiences in this tour:
When I entered this tour, I genuinely expected to be eliminated in round 1, having never played a game of SS NU or SM NU. But thanks to the quality of poh's and Rabia's sample teams, me having plenty of ADV NU experience, and dumb luck, I somehow managed to reach the semis without dropping a game. In the semis I finally got to play my home tier (GSC NU) which I won in a very tight contest against Sabella. In the finals, poh's Specs Sylveon team gave me the edge once more against Expulso, then I lost a horrifically played DPP NU game and won GSC NU thanks to an unexpected Ice Beam from Octillery, though it was yet another tight game coming down to endgame management. Against Maple, I was becoming concerned because I had used the same team twice in the semis and finals and the replays were publicly available. And indeed, the matchup I faced in SS NU looked absolutely unwinnable. Probably should have changed teams there, oops. I noticed that a lot of the teams my opponents were bringing in GSC NU seemed to lack answers to Baton Pass, so I tried to earn a cheap win with Ledian pass, which was successful, but then I made a complete mess of SM NU, letting Comfey take Toxic and generally not understanding how to use the team I had chosen. Luckily for me, Expulso managed to beat Maple for the round robin bracket reset.

The second time around, I decided I was not going to bring the same SS NU team again, so I sought assistance from my long-time friend elodin, who was very willing to assist. Many thanks, I owe you one. He also provided a dump of DPP NU and SM NU teams from which I identified the kind of team that I wanted to use against Maple in the second match if it came to that. I decided that I didn't like any of the DPP NU teams in that dump though, and instead looked for other teams that I'd seen in RoA tour nights matches. The team I ended up going with worked splendidly, giving me a 2-1 victory in a close series. The GSC NU game was looking pretty close at the start, but some Kingler paralysis luck gave me an impossibly huge advantage and led to a sweep. I lost SS NU against both players, and decided to bring the Kingler paralysis team again versus Maple, and through a miraculous combination of odds working out, getting the Stun Spore off against Screech Duggy, and a poorly timed switch to Xatu, I managed to overcome a pretty big deficit despite Xatu doing Xatu things for much of the early-midgame and swept with Curse Gloom against a paralyzed team. Thankfully at this point I got a phone call from a work colleague and we had to postpone the third match.

I was convinced that I was going to lose after my first series against Maple, because my games never felt like I had much of a chance due to my poor understanding of the tier and its Pokemon, and the fact that I was too scared to fall back on more familiar, already-exposed teams from the semis and first round robin. However, my saviour HSA came through after I begged him to play against me with sample teams and help me understand the ins and outs of various matchups in the tier and my team in particular. He spent about an hour helping me prepare for the last game and explained how I could create pressure in various matchups, even analysing the teams that Maple had exposed during the semis and finals so far. I firmly believe that my chances of winning were increased by a huge amount thanks to him, so I'm very thankful. Thanks again to elodin also for providing the team. I had confidence that was notably absent from any of the SM NU games I've previously played, and the matchup also seemed great from the start--instead of Maple's Fishious Rend fish thing taking a dump on Vaporeon and my team, it was my Refresh Rapid Spin Blastoise slowly chipping away at Maple's Vaporeon and other limited resources.

This tour has been really enjoyable for me. I usually don't play tours that I don't think I have a good shot at winning, but I felt the need to play this one because I wanted to help spread the news about how fun and involved the GSC NU community is. Shoutouts to Reeece, FNH, cherryb0ng, Siatam, and the rest of the GSC NUers, as well as roxiee for giving us a shot in the community's tournaments. I hope the matches on display for GSC NU have also helped put the competitiveness and fun levels of the tier on display--just as it was by no means easy for strong new gen NUers to compete against me in their main tiers when I had access to the resources publicly available for those tiers, it was not easy for me to compete with the newer players either when they had access to the GSC NU resources we've put together. And since I didn't enter the tour expecting to win, it is all the more satisfying to have achieved that, regardless of various fortunate things that may have gone my way throughout.

I'll look forward to the next NU tour featuring these great tiers!

Congrats Earthworm! Super deserved win, you’re obviously great at GSC but being able to play well in all the other generations, both with and without team preview, is very impressive. Very fun games & tour, I enjoyed it a lot even tho my DPP hasnt been impressive at all recently. All the NU oldgens are very interesting, shoutout to quziel for being an ORAS goat since I used the thief Magmortar team a lot. Looking forward to watching / testing in all these gens more next NUPL!
