5th gen OU - Team Old School - 1st Gen Only

A few days ago I made a war story about a 1st gen team I used, found here: http://www.smogon.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3458364, and was pleasantly surprised when it received very positive feedback. It also inspired me to make a RMT thread here and possibly get some tips on improving the team. Like the thread says, this is a gimmicky team, but at the same time I made it as competitive as possible so it can warrant a RMT thread. To keep the gimmick, I will only accept first gen replacements.

Unfortunately, if you're using a first gen only team, you're bound to suffer the weaknesses that come with them, such as only having access to 2 steel types (only 1 actually being somewhat viable for OU), and having a general weaknesses to Pokemon with Psychic/Ghost type coverage as you have no Dark types and only one Pokemon on the whole team that resists both. Regardless, if you play this team smart, it can win you some nice battles. It even does okay against weather teams.

Building the team:

Right off the bat I wanted Mew. So versatile, can be anything it wants to be which is particularly helpful since I have a limited amount of choices, so I decided to go for it and make it a Stealth Rock lead.

Now I want something to complement this Mew, both offensively and defensively. Mew has weaknesses to Bug and Dark. What powerhouse 1st gen Poke resists both of those?

You got it, Machamp. So now I have a Stealth Rock lead and a physical attacker. What I want now is a special attacker to balance the team out a little bit. Something with a nice movepool with tons of coverage to abuse.

Since having at least one steel type is pretty much mandatory if you want to be successful in OU, I decide to get a Steel type. Didn't have much of a choice, but it turned out to be a good pick anyway, because this Mew is physical and has Superpower.

And finally, I'm going to need a strong defensive core. This team needs a couple of tanks, and after thinking a bit and asking around, I decided on what I think is the strongest possible 1st Gen defensive core; Chansey and Slowbro.

Bada boom, bada bing! It was a bit of a process finding selections, but I think I have a viable OU team!

The team

200px-151Mew.png

Mew @ Mental Herb
Trait: Synchronize
EVs: 252 HP / 140 Atk / 112 Spd
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Stealth Rock
- Taunt
- Thunder Wave
- Superpower

Probably not a Mew you've seen before. Let me explain. This Mew is designed to destroy 2 common leads, and cripple one that otherwise completely walls it. 140 Atk EVs to assure a 1HKO on a standard 252/0 Tyranitar with Superpower. 252 HP for dat bulk, and the rest on speed. Stealth Rock because..it's a Stealth Rock lead. Taunt + Mental Herb will make Deoxys-S cry as it will usually try to Taunt you first. You'll eat up the Mental Herb, Taunt it back and make it useless. Thanks to Mewcario2546 for giving me that idea. Thunder Wave is for Espeon and I know you're thinking "Paralyzed Espeon, wut?" Thanks to Mew's Synchronize, you CAN get the paralysis on Espeon, but you'll be paralyzed too. It's a small sacrifice to make to cripple that annoying little thing. Superpower to 1HKO T-tar as previously mentioned, and to hit Dark types in general that would otherwise trouble Mew.

170px-068Machamp.png

Machamp (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: No Guard
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SDef / 0 Speed IVs
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Substitute
- DynamicPunch
- Bullet Punch
- Stone Edge

When I was testing this team for the first few battles, Machamp didn't get much use and I was considering changing it. I gave it a few more chances and boy was I wrong about it. This thing is a powerhouse! And it can sweep with the best of them. 252 Atk EVs for obvious reasons, 252 HP EVs for some bulk. Doesn't need speed at all. Even gave it 0 Speed IVs for Trick Room Slowbro, which will be shown later. The plan is to sub up, DynamicPunch, keep subbing up if you have enough health, wait for confuse hax, and DynamicPunch the next Pokemon. Stone Edge is a standard move for flying types etc, and Bullet Punch over Payback because Payback is pretty useless, Stone Edge hits Ghosts and Psychics almost as hard, and harder with dat critical hit. Also because this team has no priority moves. If Machamp is behind a sub with Trick Room up, it's GG.

210px-034Nidoking.png

Nidoking (M) @ Choice Scarf
Trait: Sheer Force
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Earth Power
- Thunderbolt
- Flamethrower
- Ice Beam

Oh, sweet Nidoking. Don't tell your other teammates, but you're my favorite. Expecting to outspeed a Life Orb variant and get some easy damage on it? No, sorry, wrong. Nidoking speeds by you, uses the appropriate move and laughs as it 1HKOs. Lucario, Infernape, non scarfed Landorus, and other frail sweepers, I'm proud to say YOU LOSE! GOOD DAY SIRS! Other than the item, it's your standard Nidoking. I wish this thing was OU, it's so badass. Look at that perfect coverage. Just look at it. Name a single OU Pokemon that isn't hit for neutral damage by one of these 4 moves. You can't.

180px-082Magneton.png

Magneton @ Eviolite
Trait: Magnet Pull
EVs: 240 HP / 232 SAtk / 36 SDef
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Substitute
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Thunderbolt
- Volt Switch

Bye Ferrothorn, bye Scizor, bye Skarmory. Its primary purpose is as a steel killer, but thanks to its steel typing and Eviolite boosted defenses, it can come in on a number of attacks and force choiced Pokemon to switch. 240 HP EVs so it has 301 HP for 3 Substitutes, 232 Sp Atk EVs to secure the 1HKO on standard 252/0 Scizor (Because what Scizor invests in Sp Def EVs? Seriously), and the rest in Sp Def for a little bulk. With Eviolite, Magneton reaches 372 defense and 277 special defense, which is...pretty awesome. Substitute + HP Fire for Ferrothorn and Scizor and just Tbolt for Skarmory. Volt Switch for scouting and giving it an easy method of retreat after it takes out what it's supposed to take out.

113Chansey.png

Chansey (F) @ Eviolite
Trait: Natural Cure
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 Spd
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Heal Bell
- Wish
- Toxic
- Protect

Standard team support Chansey. The original queen of stall herself. I can't tell you how many OU teams I've stalled out with Toxic + Wish + Protect. Reaching 178 defense with 704 HP, it can even take some physical hits with relative ease. I've literally seen NOTHING 1HKO this thing. Not even an Infernape Close Combat. Wish and Heal Bell provide the best possible team support, Protect caters to both Wish and Toxic. Toxic is the only somewhat offensive move it has. Seismic Toss isn't viable to me because with or without it, I'm still walled by Gengar (And likewise, wall it). I'm also walled by Steel types yes, but that's what Magneton is there for.

170px-080Slowbro.png

Slowbro (M) @ Leftovers Trait: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SAtk / 0 Speed IVs
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Scald
- Slack Off
- Trick Room
- Toxic

And rounding out the team is the bro himself, Slowbro. Super reliable physical wall, and has great defensive synergy with Chansey, taking physical fighting moves like a bro. EVs are standard for a physical wall. Moveset is pretty standard too. Scald for water type STAB + burn chance, Slack Room and Toxic to make for some epic stalling, and Trick Room caters to most of this team's poor speed; although Mew doesn't particularly like it, and Nidoking hates it. The Pokemon that works the best with Trick Room is Machamp. A combo with this team I like doing is Slowbro putting up Trick Room, Chansey switching and making a Wish, and have Machamp come in, essentially getting the free switch in with Wish, and having 3 turns of sweep.

A couple of threats

Reuniclus: It's such a big threat, that when I see a Reuniclus on someone else's team, I just forfeit immediately. Once Reuniclus gets Trick Room up, it's GG. Even it doesn't have Trick Room, it takes a good 2-3 of my Pokemon to take it out, and that's just assuming it doesn't have Recover. Nothing on my team can touch it.

Gengar: Machamp can take a Shadow Ball and can Stone Edge + Bullet Punch to clean it up 80% of the time. Nidoking will clean it up the other 20% of the time. Chansey can stall it out, but that's not a viable option.

Conclusion

And that's all! Hope you guys enjoyed the team, and I'm looking forward to any constructive criticism. Thanks for reading.

I like the mental herb on mew idea! Dragonite and deoxys-s are supposedly the most broken pokes in the metagame at the moment and mental herb is totally unique and this mew is a solid check for deoxys.

It's difficult for me to suggest anything since you're sticking to generation 1, its a really solid team. One thing i'd might suggest is having DD dragonite over machamp as your physical attacker since its a great pair with magneton since it's eliminating all the steels. Magneton would be more valuable if it paves the way for a dragon instead of machamp... since dynamicpunch rips through most steels anyway. Nice job

Edit: i've been testing out that mew and its pure genius, although i'm considering running heal bell over superpower, works great with synchronise.

As far as i know, Mental Herb blocks Attract, not Taunt :/

You're quite weak to Rain Teams, i suggest Thunder on Magnetone (has a quite low SpAtk) and change Machamp's set, DynamicPunch + No Guard for Close Combat + Guts, as has more power, the confusion isn't that necessary, and Scald / Will-O-Wisp won't make it useless any more. Maybe also Payback for Jellicent, Reuniclus and others?

Nice idea for a team. But you say you are weak to Gengar and Reuniclus. Well look no further than Gengar. If you manage to get up a sub with Gengar, than your Gengar will have virtually no problems beating Reuniclus and Gengar. Also, scarf Nidoking deals with Gengar btw. Anyways, the set:
Gengar@ Life Orb
Trait: Levitate
4 HP/252 SpA/252 Spe
Shadow Ball
Focus Blast
Substitute
Pain Split
Take out Machamp for this. It is strong, but just not that good anymore.

While Machamp is a great Pokemon, Dragonite would probably be the better Poke to fill that slot. It synergizes well with Magneton and Chansey, taking Fighting hits like a champ. It's also decently bulky, and doesn't have as much trouble with Pokemon such as Gliscor and Celebi.

I prefer the Bulky DDer, but you could also try the offensive set and see how that works for your team.

Dragonite @ Lum Berry
Trait: Multiscale
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SpA)
-Dragon Dance
-Outrage / Dragon Claw
-Fire Punch
-Earthquake

Dragonite @ Leftovers
Trait: Multiscale
EVs: 252 HP / 44 Atk / 212 Spe
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SpA)
-Dragon Dance
-Dragon Claw
-Fire Punch
-Roost

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I was thinking about using Dragonite, and will probably be making that change. Gengar...maybe not, but I'll consider it.

Use this team in UU

Mew and Chansey are both OU where I play xD If it was a UU time, I'd put it in the UU forum :P
