VGC A Begginer's First

So I haven't done much Pokemon gaming since the original ruby and sapphire, but my wife and I decided to pick up ORAS, and I've decided I want to get into it seriously. After playing through the game a couple of times, doing a lot of research and testing, I've come up with my team. It's not ground breaking or anything new, just something effective to get the job done. I win alot more than I lose so far, but I'm still very new, so please, be brutal. Any advice at all would be great.

My Process
I started this off with Mega Kangaskhan. I always thought she was great in past generations, and I realized that she's a great offensive threat in gen VI so she was the first member of my team. Being a very offensive player, I opted for Landorus-T for his excellent typing, decent bulk with intimidate, and great attack power. From there, I added Thundurus and Talonflame to give a level of synergy, and allow Landorus to spout earthquakes with relative abandon. Terrakion was added to give some more firepower with his typing, followed by Heatran for more coverage and to add a bit of defense.

The Team

Talonflame @ Choice Band
Ability: Gale Wings
EVs: 252 Atk / 164 Spe / 88 HP / 4 Def
Adamant Nature
- Steel Wing
- Flare Blitz
- U-Turn
- Brave Bird

I was originally skeptical about using Talonflame on my team due to its low bulk and mere 81 atk stat, but priority Brave Bird won me over after some use. With choice band, this thing hits like a truck. It has great synergy when used with Landorus-T, as it is immune to Earthquake and has excellent coverage. Steel wing is mainly for coverage here, particularly with fairies, when I need something extra. Brave Bird and Flare Blitz are the standard STAB moves here with U-Turn being used in case of an immediate exit being needed from the start.

I went with pure attack in the spread, with enough speed to cover my bases with other priority users, and the rest into bulk to survive an extra attack or two.

Landorus-Therian @ Choice Scarf

Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Spe / 4 HP
Adamant Nature
- U-Turn
- Hammer Arm
- Rock Slide
- Earthquake

Landorus was an easy choice for me, as his excellent typing and great attack power fit in perfectly with my style. Earthquake provides a powerful stab move, while Rock Slide gives him excellent coverage. U-Turn is for when he’s leading my team and I need to make an immediate switch. I chose Hammer Arm over something like Superpower because it gets more benefit off of his amazing attack stat. It’s mainly a coverage move when I have nothing else, so in those situations, the speed increase I think is negligible.

His spread is pretty basic. Full attack and speed to hit everything hard, and to do it first. I used choice scarf on him as most of my team is pretty fast already, and the extra speed really does him some favors.
642.png

Thundurus @ Life Orb
Ability: Prankster

EVs: 252 SpA / 252 Spe / 4 HP
Timid Nature
- Thunder Wave
- Dark Pulse
- Thunderbolt
- Grass Knot
Thundurus was another easy decision, as I already had two incredible physical attackers. Thundurus functions as a special attacker with the potential to seriously annoy with his prankster thunder wave. Thunder Wave for the obvious implications, Thunderbolt for STAB. Dark Pulse I added for coverage purposes, as it hits ghosts and psychic types hard which is something I was lacking. Grass Knot is also for a bit of extra coverage, although eventually I’d like to exchange that for HP Ice which will help greatly with my lack of a dragon counter.

Spread here is for power and speed, with Life Orb to help him do extra damage. I figure he won’t take too many hits, and I didn’t want to be locked into a single attack with choice specs.

Heatran @ Leftovers
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpA / 4 HP
Modest Nature
- Earth Power
- Protect
- Fire Blast
- Flash Cannon

Heatran joined my team originally as a powerful fire/steel type attacker, but has really stayed for his utility. Even without any investment, I’ve found him to be quite bulky and a great counter to fairy types like Sylveon. Fire Blast and Flash Cannon function as his main STAB moves, with Earth Power for coverage. Since I was using leftovers on him, I decided to give him protect to take advantage of it.

His EV spread is purely offensive (as you can tell, that’s really what I like my pokemon to be), but I’ve been thinking of giving him a little bit of extra bulk. If it’s not super effective, he’ll be fine. But he tends to drop if you can hit him with a weakness. I had originally considered giving him choice specs, but opted against it for the extra survivability and to prevent him from being locked into one particular move.
639.png

Terrakion @ Focus Sash
Ability: Justified
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Spe / 4 HP
Jolly Nature
- Close Combat
- Rock Slide
- Protect
- Swords Dance

Terrakion entered my team for his dual fighting/rock type coverage. With his ability to hit tons of pokemon very hard, it wasn’t a difficult decision. Close Combat and Rock Slide are my STAB moves on him, with Swords Dance to boost his already great attack when I can. I chose to use protect on him as well, as he tends to be a bit flimsy, and I like being able to scout out oncoming attacks.

Again, power and speed for his spread to round things out. I went with a focus sash on him to make sure he can survive at least a single super effective attack and continue fighting. I’ve found that a single hit from Terrakion can be the difference between a win and a loss.

115.png

Kangaskhan @ Kangaskhanite
Ability: Parental Bond
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Spe / 4 Def
Adamant Nature
- Sucker Punch
- Power-Up Punch
- Fake Out
- Return

Kangaskhan was the first pokemon I decided on since I’d always really liked it, and once I realized how incredible it’s mega evolution was, I decided to add it to my team. It’s set is pretty standard with Return for STAB, Sucker Punch for priority, and Fake Out for utility and damage. Power-Up Punch didn’t originally seem like it would come in handy often, but with the fighting type hitting a lot of things very hard, and the double attack bonus, I’ve come to use it quite frequently.

Kanga gets my generally attack and speed spread with her stone to allow her to evolve. I wanted her especially to hit extremely hard and make sure she could outspeed most things that would threaten her.

Problems

1. First and foremost, I have nothing to deal with dragon types. So far this hasn’t been too much of a problem, thanks to being able to take advantage of dual typing, but this is definitely something I’d like to be able to address.

2. My team has a lot of power and hits really hard. Most people don’t seem to be expecting a team with this much offense honestly, but if I hit a powerful wall, I’ve gotten stuck once or twice, and sometimes I can’t recover. This is something I’m not sure how to fix.

3. My team shares a lot of types, and therefore a lot of weaknesses. This surprisingly hasn’t been too much of an issue yet, but I suspect that it will definitely come up more in the future.

This is my first team ever that wasn’t just for an in game play through. I know it’s nothing incredible, but it’s my very first attempt. Feel free to offer any and all criticism, and thanks for reading it.

Anybody at all?
I'll give you my little bit. I don't think Hammer Arm on Lando is the best option as it fails to always OHKO Kangaskhan like Superpower. Also one thing I notice is your team is really weak to rain. You have Talonflame to help with Ludicolo as well as Thundurus but say your opponent is running a Terrakion + Politoed you could be in some trouble. (Well you are kinda weak to bulky waters in general) Just a thought you may wanna switch out Terrakion for something like Amoonguss and run HP Ice Taunt on Thundy. That is just a little bit from me Good luck.

Edit: Fails to OHKO Lando oops changed to Kang.

Hey there, cool team man! Definitely agreeing with Mishimono here, your team is really weak to rain and Trick Room. You can usually stop Trick Room by Taunting it with Thundurus, but that only delays the problem, it doesn't necessarily stop it.

For starters though, I suggest changing Talonflame's spread to 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe with an Adamant Nature. Unless the HP EVs help it survive something crucial, which I kind of doubt, you're much better off going with a simple max/max spread. Talonflame doesn't have the bulk to withstand any notable hits, so it would much rather outspeed and KO something, which is why max Speed is preferred over a bulkier spread. I also suggest replacing Steel Wing with Tailwind. Steel Wing doesn't hit anything relevant to be honest. Against Fairy-types, such as Gardevoir and Sylveon, you're MUCH better off going for Brave Bird, as it does more damage after factoring in STAB. Steel Wing is also a really bad move to lock yourself into. Tailwind, on the other hand, is more of a utility move. Talonflame is bound to be super weakened, as its primary attacking moves deal recoil damage. There are many times, especially on a Choice Band set, where Talonflame won't be able to do anything once it's weakened, such as when you're staring down a max health Landorus-T; this is where Tailwind comes in. Tailwind is essentially a last-ditch effort from Talonflame to support its teammate once it goes down, and late-game, using a well-timed Tailwind can often steal the game, as your opponent's Pokemon will either be knocked out or severely weakened to the point where they can't stall out Tailwind.

Totally agreeing with Mishimono in that you should switch out Hammer Arm for Superpower. Superpower is stronger than Hammer Arm, and both Hammer Arm and Superpower's drops will usually force Landorus-T to switch out, so why not choose the stronger alternative? Losing Speed, especially for Choice Scarf Landorus-T is just as bad as losing Attack and Defense because it can allow your opponent to outspeed Landorus-T.

Again, going to agree with Mishimono's changes for Thundurus. Grass Knot and Dark Pulse are pretty unnecessary coverage to be honest. The only thing I can think of that Grass Knot would hit would be Gastrodon and Swampert, both of which aren't even that common, whereas Dark Pulse honestly doesn't hit anything at all. It does nothing to Cresselia and Gengar is 2HKOed by Thunderbolt anyways. So I suggest replacing Grass Knot and Dark Pulse with Taunt and Hidden Power Ice respectively. Taunt allows Thundurus to delay Trick Room, as well as other forms of speed control, such as Tailwind and Thunder Wave. HP Ice allows Thundurus to hit both Landorus-T and Mega Salamence hard, both of which are really common Pokemon in VGC. Switching to a bulkier Thundurus will benefit your team a lot more to be honest, as it increases its longevity and thus allowing it to spread Thunder Wave more. A spread of 252 HP / 120 Def / 36 SpA / 68 SpD / 28 Spe with a Calm Nature allows Thundurus to outrun +Speed nature base 70s, most notably Breloom, while the HP and Special Defense investment allows Thundurus to survive a Modest Life Orb Hydreigon's Draco Meteor. The Defense investment allows Thundurus to take crucial physical attacks, such as Mega Kangaskhan's Double Edge and have a chance at avoiding a 2HKO from Terrakion's Rock Slide. As you're running a more defensive spread, Sitrus Berry should be used over Life Orb to further increase Thundurus's longevity.

  • 252+ SpA Life Orb Hydreigon Draco Meteor vs. 252 HP / 68+ SpD Thundurus: 156-185 (83.8 - 99.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Sitrus Berry recovery
  • 252+ Atk Parental Bond Mega Kangaskhan Double-Edge vs. 252 HP / 120 Def Thundurus: 189-223 (101.6 - 119.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Sitrus Berry recovery
  • 252 Atk Terrakion Rock Slide vs. 252 HP / 120 Def Thundurus: 108-128 (58 - 68.8%) -- 62.5% chance to 2HKO after Sitrus Berry recovery

Heatran needs Speed investment to be honest. Heatran is weak to a lot of common types, such as Ground and Fighting, so running max HP EVs doesn't really help survive anything. I suggest changing Heatran's EV spread to 52 HP / 252 SpA / 204 Spe with a Modest Nature. 204 Speed allows Heatran to outrun neutral base 70s, most notably Bisharp with the rest of the EVs put into HP. Fire Blast isn't worth using to be honest. Its cool on choiced sets and it OHKOs Aegislash, but for non-choiced Heatran, using Heat Wave is much more reliable. Heat Wave is a spread move, which is super important in a doubles metagame, as it allows Heatran to hit two Pokemon; which is essentially the only reason that it is used over Fire Blast or Flamethrower haha. Flash Cannon is cool and all, but honestly using Substitute will benefit you a lot more. Flash Cannon only hits Fairy-types, most of which can't touch Heatran anyways; meaning that you'll be able to beat them with Heat Wave alone. Substitute allows Heatran to beat Amoonguss and Venusaur, as it can avoid Spore by Substituting on it. Substitute already works really well with Leftovers, as it can allow it to heal up HP from Substitute. Heatran's typing, despite being weak to a lot of common types, also resists a lot of common types, which is perfect in conjunction with Substitute, as it can allow it to setup on common Pokemon, such as Sylveon and Talonflame.

As for bigger changes, you can honestly go two ways with this. Terrakion is definitely the weakest link on your team. Landorus already provides Rock and Fighting coverage that Terrakion provided while also having more Speed and a better matchup versus common Pokemon, such as Aegislash, so Terrakion honestly isn't needed anymore. You can either replace Terrakion with Amoonguss or replace it with Breloom. Personally I would recommend going with Amoonguss, as it completes the THALK core (Thundurus, Heatran, Amoonguss, Landorus-T, Kangaskhan), a really popular and good core that's great for beginners, and gives you a much better matchup against rain and Trick Room; whereas Breloom keeps the offensive nature of your team and is a lot better against bulky Water-types while still giving you a decent Trick Room matchup (it's not as good as Amoonguss against rain, however). Amoonguss can also allow Kangaskhan to setup Power-Up Punch easier by redirecting a powerful hit, such as Close Combat, away from it with Rage Powder.

Once again man, this is a sweet team, especially for a beginner! If you do decide to go Amoonguss, keep in mind that it isn't a Trick Room and rain counter, but it certainly does VERY well against it. Breloom, on the other hand, while not as bulky, is much more offensive. This is honestly up to personal preference to be honest. Definitely pay close attention when you're playing against weather teams, most notably sun and rain. Against those teams, your main focus should honestly be getting up speed control as fast as possible. Once you get that up, you should be able to overpower your opponent with Kangaskhan. Hope I helped man and good luck with the team!!! :]
