Recently I've gotten into Monotype teams, so I wanted to try out a Dragon monotype team, but then I realized something, with the recent banishment of Latias and Salamence to Ubers, there are only FOUR fully evolved Dragons in OU.
Dragonite, Flygon, Altaria and of course Kingdra
With these four on the team I needed two pseudo-"dragons" on my team, my options were Gyarados, Aerodactyl, Charizard and Tyranitar.
Tyranitar's Sand Stream messed up my team, and his attacking power didn't really make up for it, IMO.
While Aerodactyl IS useful for setting up Stealth Rock, I'm not the biggest fan of entry hazards, nor suicide leads.
That left Gyarados and Charizard.
Gyarados makes a great lead and can set up DD on SR users and kill most other offensive leads.
While Charizard's most popular set is Bellyzard, I always hated it and thought he made a better special attacker, due to his high Speed and Sp. Atk.
A Closer Look
Gyarados @ Lum Berry / Leftovers
(Overdose)
Jolly
252 ATK/252 Spd/ 4 HP
-Dragon Dance
-Thunder Wave/Taunt
-Waterfall
-EQ
Thunder wave whatever their lead is to cripple it and help me set up more easily, taunt is more useful for SR users, but T Wave is more useful in general and helps me set up more easily. While they're struggling to set up or retaliate I can almost always get up at least 3 D-Dances and proceed to sweep their team, more than a few times, Gyarados has murdered entire TEAMS without taking any damage. VERY nice.
Flygon @ Choice Scarf
(Shotgon)
Adamant
252 ATK/252 Spd/4 HP
-EQ
-Stone Edge
-U-Turn
-Dragon Claw
My primary revenge killer, EQ for STAB, Stone Edge to hit Gyrados and Togekiss, U-Turn if I want to get in and out very quickly. I used Dragon Claw over Outrage because I don't like not being able to switch out, especially when using a revenge killer.
Kingdra @ Lum Berry
(Drag Queen)
Sniper
Adamant
252 ATK /252 Spd/ 4 HP
-Substitute
-Dragon Dance
-Waterfall
-Outrage
A typical Kingdra set, come in on something that can't hurt me, Sub and Dragon Dance until my sub is broken, proceed to sweep. Sniper is used because I have no use for Swift Swim. At all. Lum Berry is on it so I can get rid of that pesky Outrage confusion.
Charizard @ Choice Specs
(Kaiser)
Timid
252 Sp. Atk / 252 Spd / 4 HP
-Overheat
-Hidden Power Water
-Air Slash
-Focus Blast
Ahh, Charizard, with his great Sp. Atk and good Speed, he's a great Choice Specs user, and deals with the team's crippling Ice-type weakness. Originally I had Fire Blast, but it kept missing, then I had Flamethrower, but it was too weak, I finally settled on Overheat, since he won't be out there for very long anyway. Hidden Power water is for Rock-types and other fire types. Air slash is for STAB, and Focus Blast is to deal with Water/Ice types.
Altaria @ Leftovers
(CotonCandy)
Careful
252 HP / 40 Def / 216 Sp. Def
-Toxic
-Earthquake
-Roost
-Heal Bell
Altaria has great defensive stats, so she makes a great wall. Toxic is for residual damage, EQ so I can kill steels who think Altaria's a free set-up. Heal Bell to get rid of status and Roost to increase her bulk.
And lastly.
Dragonite @ Leftovers
(Barney)
Adamant
252 HP / 54 Atk / 204 Spd
-Dragon Claw
-EQ
-Dragon Dance
-Roost
The star of my team. I love BulkyNite, I was using it when Salamence was around and it's always served me very well. I used Dragon Claw over Outrage, since I want to stay in for a while and confusion does not help that cause. EQ + Dragon claw offers almost unresisted coverage. Dragon Dancing is easy since he's so bulky and Roost just helps his bulkiness.
Final Thoughts
I really love this team, it's lots of fun and I have a great record with it so far. While it is a "monotype" team in the loosest sense of the word, it's more BASED around dragon types, so I'm willing to add different types to support it.
Thanks, please rate and peace.
