A NetBattle Warstory

Introduction:
It was a typical Thursday morning. I was hanging around a BR NetBattle server, trying to find a decent battle, while ignoring the horror that was the chat at the same time. Not an easy task, mind you. Why NetBattle you ask? Well, for nostalgic reasons mainly, and I prefer NetBattle’s interface. I don’t recommend it over ShoddyBattle purely as an emulator though; there’re still plenty of bugs. Anyway, I challenged someone and he accepted. Seeing as he came from a somewhat established clan, I expected a challenging battle, but what I got certainly exceeded my expectations.

Note:
I always liked reading war-stories, and finally got a chance to write one. While it was not a battle of the highest quality, along with some mistakes on my part, I thoroughly enjoyed it, and hope you do too. I did not have a chance to ask my opponent for permission to make a war-story, so from henceforth he shall be known as Dude.

PKMN Trainer Red vs Dude. Begin!
PKMN Trainer Red sent out Metagross (Lv.100 Metagross)!
Dude sent out Tyranitar (Lv.100 Tyranitar)!
Tyranitar's Sand Stream whipped up a sandstorm!
Ani376MS.png
vs.
Ani248MS.png

---
A Tyranitar lead, I have an advantage here. I can 2HKO it with Earthquake and Bullet Punch, so I don’t see any reason why it would stay in. I took this time to set-up Stealth Rock.

Dude withdrew Tyranitar!
Dude sent out Jirachi (Lv.100 Jirachi)!
Metagross used Stealth Rock!
Pointed stones float in the air around Dude’s team!
PKMN Trainer Red's Metagross: 364 HP
Dude’s Jirachi: 100% HP
Ani376MS.png
vs.
Ani385MS.png

---
How weird, switching Jirachi into a Metagross. Perhaps he thought I wasn’t running Earthquake? From what I see, he has two options here; he could trick a scarf to Metagross, or he could Fire Punch. Either way, Heatran stops them.

PKMN Trainer Red withdrew Metagross!
PKMN Trainer Red sent out Heatran (Lv.100 Heatran)!
Jirachi used Trick!
Jirachi switched items with Heatran!
Jirachi obtained Choice Scarf.
Heatran obtained Choice Scarf.

Ani385MS.png

Ah ha, so trick it was. It’s going to switch, but I didn’t know the rest of his team, so I could only damage the switch-in. I Earth Power in fear of an opposing Heatran.

Dude withdrew Jirachi!
Dude sent out Blissey (Lv.100 Blissey)!
Heatran used Earth Power!
(20% damage)
A critical hit!
PKMN Trainer Red's Heatran: 324 HP
Dude’s Blissey: 68% HP
Ani485MS.png
vs.
Ani242MS.png

---
In came the blob of fat that is Blissey. I giggled a little, as I remembered another match involving my opponent and his friend. Apparently, they think Blissey is tight and will totally do her. Alas, it’s a story for another time. I’m locked into Earth Power and Dude knows it, he’s probably going to status my switch-in and there’s nothing I could do about it. I switch in Scizor, it’s immune to Toxic, doesn’t mind Thunder Wave (although parahax can be annoying), and can scare it off with Brick Break.

PKMN Trainer Red withdrew Heatran!
PKMN Trainer Red sent out Scizor (Lv.100 Scizor)!
Blissey used Thunder Wave!
Scizor is paralyzed! It may be unable to move!
PKMN Trainer Red's Scizor: 289 HP (Par)
Dude’s Blissey: 68% HP
Ani212MS.png

Ani242MS.png

Well, that was expected, to say the least. Shame, because I was really hoping for a Toxic. Get real. There’s no way Blissey’s going to stay, so I Sword Dance on the expected switch.

Dude withdrew Blissey!
Dude sent out Dusknoir (Lv.100 Dusknoir)!

Ani477MS.png

It’s been awhile since I faced a Dusknoir, I don’t know if a +2 Bullet Punch can KO it. It’s late and I’m sleepy, I really couldn’t be arsed to run calcs. Sensing a fire move of some sort, I switched Heatran.

PKMN Trainer Red withdrew Scizor!
PKMN Trainer Red sent out Heatran (Lv.100 Heatran)!

Success! From experience I know a boosted Fire Blast hurts even bulky waters, not to mention Dusknoir, so he’s probably going to switch. Blissey will come in, and we’ll be back to square one. Prediction time, I know Blissey is coming in, and I really hate that pink whore. What better to get rid of her then an Explosion?

Heatran used Explosion!
It doesn't affect Dusknoir...

PKMN Trainer Red sent out Jolteon (Lv.100 Jolteon)!

Holy crap! I’m at a loss for words, I would’ve bet my balls Blissey is coming in. Very nice prediction, Dude! Most Dusknoir packs Will-O-Wisp, a special sweeper is probably my safest bet now. Celebi is weak to ghost, so Jolteon it is. Normally I would Baton Pass to Scizor on the expected switch to Blissey, but after what happened last turn, Dude probably saw it coming

Jolteon used Thunderbolt!

Ani477MS.png

Gah, annoying crit. Now Jolteon’s going to live even shorter then usual. The Fire Punch confirms my suspicion last turn that he expected me to switch to Scizor. I should’ve Shadow Ball, but I wanted to deal some damage on the off-chance that he switches to Blissey. Now Dusknoir have been pretty useful, I doubt Dude would let it die. I smell a Blissey switch-in, so I decided to go Scizor. A risky gambit, as if he decides to sacrifice Dusknoir and Fire Punch again, I’ll be losing Scizor for nothing. You would’ve have thought I’ll learn my lesson after that blotched Explosion, right? Hell no!

PKMN Trainer Red withdrew Jolteon!

A fairly unnecessary crit, I’m sure you’ll agree. Why do I always get unnecessary crits? This marks the beginning of a series of bad plays made by me. I wasn’t thinking clearly at this time, my head just screams “KILL”. This is why you shouldn’t be playing Pokemon at 3 am.

Dude took this chance to set-up Stealth Rock, looks like Jolteon isn’t going to be playing a big part in this match. Enter Zapdos, one of the best counters against Scizor. Why didn’t he switch it in earlier? At this point I thought Scizor’s usefulness was at an end, so I wanted to deal as much damage as I can. Yes, I actually thought that my Scizor was faster because of the scarf that got tricked to it; I totally forgot that it was paralyzed. What was I smoking?

I’m pretty pissed at myself. Then again, Gyarados aside, none of my Pokemon can take a Heat Wave now. I didn’t want to go Gyarados on the off-chance that Zapdos doesn’t run Heat Wave and Thunderbolt my Scizor instead. Jolteon is almost dead; sandstorm will wreck it next turn. I wanted to blast off one last final Thunderbolt.

Wait, did he just get a free Roost? Yup, you read that right. This is one of the bugs that happen quite commonly in NetBattle. Sometimes, when one of the Pokemon faints, the opponent gets a free turn. While it doesn’t matter if he uses an attack, as I have no Pokemon on the field, it would’ve no effect, the problem occurs when the opponent use it to gain a free stats-up, heal off damage, or even switch Pokemon! As a show of sportsmanship, the player that receives the free turn usually just attack as to not gain a strategic advantage. Who am I kidding, this is NetBattle, nobody cares.

Why did he do that, I have no idea. Perhaps he thought I wouldn’t Grass Knot, Zapdos resists it x4 after all. Or he predicted a Thunder Wave, but that wouldn’t have made any sense, Ice Shard is a 2HKO at best while Grass Knot is definitely a 1HKO. Hooray for free kills! Tyranitar finally makes a reappearance, which puts me into a dilemma. Pursuit will definitely spell doom for Celebi if I switch, but I can probably beat it with Grass Knot if he does and I stay in. Decisions, decisions. A coin-flip dictates that I switch, and I’m generally a lucky person, so a switch it is!

PKMN Trainer Red withdrew Celebi!

A sub? All that coin-flipping was for naught! What type of Tyranitar uses a sub anyway? Either way, I don’t see how Tyranitar can hurt Metagross much; it’s still holding an Occa Berry. Should it run Earthquake, I’m fairly sure I can kill it before it does.

Damn, I should’ve predicted this. That sitting Tyranitar was too tempting. Now I’m in another dilemma, I could Earthquake on the obvious Roost, but I’m not sure if Metagross can survive a Heat Wave with 174 HP, even with Occa Berry. If there’s one thing I learnt though, when in doubt, go boom! Now this is why Stealth Rock is so important, had I not set them up, Zapdos will have over 25% HP and a Substitute now will screw me over.

Pokemon Red said:
he’s probably going to status my switch-in and there’s nothing I could do about it.

You switched in Scizor to take a Status when you had Celebi with Natural Cure, who could have switched in and threatened Blissey with Leech Seed and then got rid of the status on the switch? You also had Jolteon to absorb Thunder Wave (I'll admit that was a risky option because he could have used Toxic).

Decent battle, but that Roost bug shows that Netbattle stories are going to be quite defunct until it's all sorted.

All in all, above average job for a first warstory.

I'm not surprised your Gyarados was faster, usually TyraniBoah runs a -speed nature and just a little speed EVs to outspeed Blissey.

By the way, good battle and nice first warstory.

I never thought of it, guess that just goes to show I need to improve on my battling.

That free-turn bug has to go if NetBattle is ever going to be taken seriously (well, save the chat of which you speak; I wouldn't know, for I exclusively play Wifi). Were you being sarcastic when you said that the people have enough sportsmanship to waste his free turn after a KO?

Oh, does NetBattle have the Rotom formes? I'm asking because your opponent had a Dusknoir (most say Dusknoir is outclassed by Rotom, but even though it's banned on Wifi, the formes are on Shoddy).

Oh, Tyranitar with special attacks is not extinct, though less common on Wifi than the physical attacker. Keep in mind that on rare occasions, Specs Tyranitar rears its head too. You wrote well, but a major slop was not being aware of "Boah" (whatever that name means; Smogon nicknames make no sense). Keep battling, and write more warstories!

:jump:

Wait, did he just get a free Roost? Yup, you read that right. This is one of the bugs that happen quite commonly in NetBattle. Sometimes, when one of the Pokemon faints, the opponent gets a free turn.
This happens when a pokemon faints due to residual damage. In this case it was sandstorm.

And no, there are no Rotom's other forms in NB yet.

But in the case in the warstory, that's not supposed to happen. The Jolteon attacked, then the Zapdos, then the Sandstorm finished Jolteon off. Then, apparently, before he could choose a Pokemon, Zapdos Roosted in a "free turn."

Yes, I know. I just explained how the glitch works.

This was pretty good. I assume your gyarados doesn't have taunt? Also, I'm a little curious why you used grass knot on his Zapdos, it seems an interesting decision is all.

Were you being sarcastic when you said that the people have enough sportsmanship to waste his free turn after a KO?
Yes I was, then again I abuse the bug too if I get really frustrated, so I can't complain.

I'm aware of special variants of Tyranitar, I exaggerated when I used the word "extinct", but they are so rare that it never occurred to me in the heat of the battle. I probably faced those only once or twice out of a million Tyranitars (another exaggeration here).
I assume your gyarados doesn't have taunt? Also, I'm a little curious why you used grass knot on his Zapdos, it seems an interesting decision is all.
Yes, I didn't run Taunt, it was a STalker set actually. I used Grass Knot because the other option was Hidden Power [Fire], which frankly both would do craptastic damage, so I thought it wouldn't have mattered. I couldn't switch as well since Celebi was my only chance, I'm really lucky he decided to switch in Dolphan. Again, thanks for the comments guys!
