a tutor training program for Battling 101

The biggest problem on Smogon is that there is a shortage of tutors for the Battling 101 program. This combined with so many people demanding it causes many to be unable to better their skills. The Battling 101 program has had only some success in getting enough tutors for these people. The biggest obstacle in getting enough tutors is that the tutors have to be of a high quality. How about implementing a tutor training program to help solve this dilemma. The program would be like a teacher training program used for all those teachers in school. The program would be taught by the existing tutors at Battling 101. It would teach would be tutors how to be a good successful tutor. It would last a few weeks and at the end there would be a kind of examination. It would involve tutoring someone and to become part of Battling 101 the tutor must receive a satisfactory evaluation. This program could turn out many high quality tutors and help people get the tutoring they need. I came up with this idea after thinking of a way to help ease the unmet demand in Battling 101. I hope you admins find this idea useful and good day to you all.

While I agree that the tutoring program has a shortage of quality tutors, this is not the solution. The tutors have a hard enough time as it is to find time to tutor. There is simply not enough tutors / time for this to work.

Secondly, being a good tutor comes from months, even years of experience, not from learning how to tutor. Someone that would come out of this program would not have the experience of the current tutoring staff. Having unqualified tutors can be even more harmful then not having tutors at all.

IMO you can learn a lot of techniques about how tutors work just by signing up for the program.

And besides, every tutor has his own personal style. I've heard that Stathakis has his tutees do a turn-by-turn analysis of what they know of the opponent's team, and what the opponent knows of their team, which is ostensibly designed to help tutee's in predicting opponent's sets and planning for the future in the battle. When I was tutored by LonelyNess, he would give me teams and ask me to find their strategy and weaknesses, along with going on extensive backseat battling binges (where he would use my team and play for me).

Also, I was under the impression that we didn't have a shortage of qualified battlers as tutors. When you see their posts, many of their credentials include excellent ladder and tournament performances. Whether being a good player automatically makes you a good teacher is a different matter entirely.

This Tutor Tutoring Program isn't going to solve anything, I'm afraid, for reasons others have said. As tempting as it is to make a Battling 101 101 subforum...
