A Universal Signal

I was recently at an event this weekend where I thought I had found another competitive pokémon battler. I know that it is very hard to "break the ice," so I wondered if there was a universal signal to find out if someone plays.

Those of you also on funnyjunk probably know exactly what I mean (I smell bacon...). There could be a universal signal to discover if someone around you plays.

Step one: An initial word. If someone around you says a certain word or phrase (e.g. "Don't you just love the smell of onions in the morning?"), then you respond with another phrase or word.

Step two: The secondary word. If you hear the initial word, then you must respond with the secondary word or phrase. (e.g. "Most definitely")

Step three: A final gesture. If both of the previously noted actions are completed successfully, then one final gesture involving both talkers is executed. (e.g. *taps foot furiously*)

Example conversation 1:

Person A: ...And that's how I won the Nobel prize!
Person B: That's so interesting... Don't you just love the smell of onions in the morning?
Person A: Umm... what the hell?

In this case, person B tries to use the initial word to start the Universal Signal. Person A does not recognize the symbol and shuts the conversation off right away. This scenario will be encountered most often. Attempt FAILED.

Example conversation 2:

Person A: ...And that's how I won the Nobel Prize!
Person B: That's so interesting... Don't you just love the smell of onions in the morning?
Person A: Most definitely!
Person B: *taps foot furiously*
Person A: What's wrong with your foot!?

In this scenario, Person B tries to initiate the signal. Person A replies with the correct response, but the final gesture does not follow through. This case shows exactly why the final gesture is necessary. This scenario is very rare. Attempt FAILED.

Example conversation 3:

Person A: ...And that's how I won the Nobel Prize!
Person B: That's so interesting... Don't you just love the smell of onions in the morning?
Person A: Most definitely!
Person B: *taps foot furiously*
Person A: *taps foot furiously*

In the final case, the entire signal is completed. This will be very rare to come by, but definitely has the most rewarding outcome. Attempt SUCCESSFUL.

ANy suggestions of a more thought-out signal would be great, and this would help battlers everywhere communicate and find each other better.

real men do not hide themselves in the closet. if you really wanted to know you could just ask them if they knew what smogon was

There are two types of people on this board.

1. The group of people socially inept and / or nerdy enough that you would expect them to play competitive Pokemon.

2. The group of people normal enough to get away with others knowing they play competitive Pokemon.

You're obviously in the first group, so no need to worry about alienation. If you must, say something about "competitive battling" or "competitive gaming" rather than Pokemon outright. Or make a Metang@ joke on accident and have someone ask you if you're the guy who keeps getting banned.

Just openly admit that you play competitive Pokemon. But there are of course right and wrong ways of doing this:

Example 1:
Person A: Um...yeah...so I'm like...kinda...into Pokemon battling?
Person B: Bahahaha dude grow the fuck up.

Wrong

Example 2:
Person A: I BATTLE POKEMON MOTHERFUCKER! WHAT OF IT? MY GARCHOMP WILL MESS YOUR SHIT UP. I'M HOTTER THAN ASH KETCHUM BIIIITCH.
Person B: Whoa what a boss.

Right

Do it the right way and you can't go wrong.

Going around saying these "signals" sounds more embarassing than asking someone if they play Pokemon if you ask me...

exactly

Just say: hey, ever heard of smogon? If they aren't german, chances are they will ask what it is or say that hey are a member. If they ask what it is make up some shit about how its a cool band or something

I think if we modified the handkerchief code for Pokemon players it would work out excellently.

Like a blue handkerchief in the right pocket means you want to play RBY OU or an orange handkerchief in the left pocket means you have well IVed Pokemon to trade.

I think it is a good system and I will be using the blue handkerchief myself.
