A valiant first attempt at a WiFi team

Here is my first go at a competitve team. It is crucial to note that I do not have access to Gen 4 movesets, thus certain Pokemon cannot reach their upmost potential. After putting what I believe to be some well-practiced thought into the team, I feel like a I put solid effort in my first go-around.

I have experimented with all sorts of teams, Sandstorm, Hail, Trick Room etc. Trick Room saw some success utilizing Bronzong and Eviolite Dusclops and perhaps my favorite pokemon Slowbro. It was used to counter the heavy assault of speed teams hich the metagame appears to be centered around. I even tried using a Cloud Nine RestTalk Lickilicky for a period of time to counter weather teams, but I'd have to form a better core for him to find success.

I decided then to build a core of attackers that worked well together, as well as a trio of defensive pokes that synergize well. One of them, Snorlax, is capable of walling hits as well as hitting hard. This is important because now I can make a defensive situation more offensive. Thus, I maintain and or create offensive momentum, which is important to the team. However, it is also versatile enough to slow the pace of the battle and weather a team down.

Current Team:

121.png

Starmie @ Life Orb
Natural Cure
4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Sp
Timid
Rapid Spin
Surf
Psyshock
Thunderbolt / Ice Beam?

Starmie turned into my "lead" quickly being able to counter a wide array of threats in the metagame. Rapid Spin is here for hazard support that could potentially plague the team. The new move Psyshock is neat for attacking those special walls who think they can halt Starmie in its tracks.

212.png

Scizor @ Leftovers
Technician
230 HP / 96 Atk / 180 Def
Adamant
Swords Dance
Bullet Punch
Brick Break
X-Scissor

Here is where not having Gen 4 moves hurts. A bulky Scizor does well for this team, however, note that I have Evs invested in Defense as I find him switching in on physical threats more often than not. However, if it is best put them in special bulk, I'd like a reasoning why. Able to both revenge kill wtih Bullet Punch and also boost and hit a variety of threats, Scizor is an admirable asset to the team.

392.png

Infernape @ Life orb
Blaze
4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Sp
Naive
Close Combat
Nasty Plot
Grass Knot
Flamethrower

Yes, a MixNape set packing Grass Knot. A bit odd in the new generation, but it fits the team well. This MixNape set is valuable in KOing boosting Scrafty as well as eliminating Grass threats that threaten my defensive core. This set also damages a large number of opposing defensive cores as well.

143.png

Snorlax @ Choice Band
Thick Fat
40 HP / 252 Atk / 216 SpD
Adamant
Pursuit
Body Slam
Earthquake
Brick Break?

Snorlax is both a beast in appearance and ability and I believe underrated this generation. His ability and EVs allow it sponge special hits like the monster he is and then crush them with the attack of choice. He also acts as a great pursuit trapper, threatening Starmie, Latios, and Gengar. However, often I find myself debating hitting the incoming switch, or punishing the escaping special attacker.

593.png

Jellicent @ Leftovers
Cursed Body
252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Calm
Will-O-Wisp
Protect
Surf
Recover

One of my favorite Gen 5 pokemon, and notably the only member of that generation on the team. He is a great compliment to Snorlax as he can the big guy often lures fighting attacks and Jellicent flaunts his immunity and can WoW the switch. Snorlax also can switch in on the Ghost attacks targeting Jellicent and then Pursuit Trap or choose the necessary move for the KO. His resistance to Ice and Fire create a tandem of special walls on the team between she and Snorlax which heavily benefits Scizor and the final defensive member of the team, Gliscor.

472.png

Gliscor @ Leftovers
Sand Veil
252 HP / 180 Def / 76 Sp
Impish
Substitute
Earthquake
Toxic
Protect

Okay, no DW poison heal, I know. I'll get there eventually, I almost have enough points. Besides the point, Gliscor fills out the team well. He can come in on his ground or electric immunity, sub up, and then toxic the switch. He can then protect or Earthquake to add damage to the foe. He is a valuable asset in his ability to stall, yet damage with an excellent STAB- Earthquake. His Ice Weakness is countered by the remainder of the team as are his other weaknesses. He is necessary to stop the heavy hitters on the physical side this generation. I tried a variety of sets prior to this set, and this one appears to be doing me wel thus far.

So that's the team. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I see that I may have a taunt weakness and am not entirely sure if I covered it. Also wondering if entry hazard support would be helpful. Glaring weaknesses too!

Hey man, great looking team you've got right here. I would suggest a different moveset for Jellicent though, and a small tweak in it's Ev's as well, more like this
593.png
@ Leftovers
Ability: Water Absorb

*It may seem as if cursed body is better, but trust me, it's nice to switch in on other Bulky Waters and heal up

Ev's: 248 Hp / 216 Def / 44 Spe

*248 Hp allows Jellicent to take less damage from spikes, as well as sponge some attacks aimed at your Gliscor (Water mostly). 44 Spe Ev's will allow your Jellicent to outspeed other Scizor's and burn them, allowing you to switch in and either kill or revenge kill it.

Moves:
Scald
Will-o-Wisp
Recover
Taunt

*Jellicent REALLY wants to burn pokemon, allowing other team mates a better oppurtunity to come in and kill. With Scald and WoW, you will make sure to accomplish this. I put in taunt over protect to hit Bulky Pokemon, such as Blissey, Skarmory and Scizor so they can't set up on your or annoy you.

Hope this helped :)

I like this set quite a bit. But is the nature still calm? I know you're saying to make more balanced defenses, but a nature would dictate the specifics. And this fills my taunt hole quite well. Thanks for your help. I'll definitely look into your suggestions!

with adamant and 252 evs, wat is snorlaxes attack stat?

I would also make jellicets nature bold to make him bulkier on the physical side

I like the idea that ALpha Wolf brought up as you will be able to taunt a person into allowing you a nasty plot or 2 with your Ape. That makes for a very scary combo.

Hey man, your team looks great!

However, I think your team would be vulnerable to the following set up.

Ninjask @ Focus Sash
Swords Dance
Baton Pass
Protect
X-Scissor

Scrafty @ Leftovers
Dragon Dance
Hi Jump Kick
Crunch
Taunt

Ninjask, a common baton pass lead, is an instant counter to Starmie. In addition, a DD Scrafty with two speed boosts from Ninjask will outspeed your Infernape, the only counter your team has to Scrafty.

Just something you should look out for.

No reason to have Gliscor on this team other than Surprise factor. If youre going with Gliscor non-PH, try the SubDance Gliscor

Adamant snorlax reaches 350 attack. Impressive, right? And bold does sound useful.

And yes, I agree. And return does sound like a stronger alternative but the chance at paralysis has value too.

Team preview allows me to easily counter Ninjask with X4 resist. So, that lead is countered quite well. Thanks anyway!

Okay, jle, what do you propose?

Nice team. It looks like a pretty standard team at first, but Snorlax being thrown in there is kind of a surprise this generation.

U-Turn is usually standard on all Scizors, because it's really good for scouting and retreating from a counter. Remove X-Scissor for it.

Starmie doesn't seem like a good lead, since leads aren't supposed to sweep; they're supposed to set up, or mess up other leads. However, I'm not sure how well Starmie does here, so don't take my word for it.

You might want to switch out Body Slam for Return on Snorlax. The 17 more BP (25.5 when factoring STAB) turns 3HKOs to 2HKOs, 2HKOs to 1HKOs, and so on. 30% paralysis isn't worth it in my opinion.

I'm not very good at RMTs, but I hope I helped.

Nah man, any rate is appreciated. And Im debating the switch to uturn purely because if im swords dancing up, I don't want to switch out, however it also helps keep the momentum. And starmie isn't always the lead but he can work well with ape to put pressure on from the start. Also, your comment has further pursuaded me to use Return on Snorlax.

Thanks for your thoughts!

On PO, this would be a wonderful defensive core. However: remember that wifi is often more offensively oriented (weather random matchup or 6v6). I'm not saying you should change your team, but just make sure you don't rely on the defensive core too much. That fact aside, this is a pretty good team here. I like the defensive core's synergy, and gliscor is a nice fit to this team, rounding it out. It also packs the surprise factor with a rather defensive set. All in all this is a pretty good team.

A couple minor things:

Thunderbolt is definately a superior option over Ice Beam on Starmie, it allows it to beat Jellicent, the most commonly seen spinblocker, since hazards absolutely **** up Infernape.

Due to Technician, Bug Bite for Scizor is actually more powerful than X-Scissors, along with the bonus effect of possibly getting rid of some of those random Chesto and Lum Berries.

I second Alpha Wolf's suggestions for Jellicent

That same Gliscor set can be run with Poison Heal and Toxic Orb anyways, why sacrifice 6.25% healing each turn, as well as status immunity just for the unreliable Sand Veil kicking in occasionally? The standard Gliscor with SD, EQ, Ice Fang, and Protect/Taunt is better for checking strong fighting and ground types such as Excadrill and Conkeldurr anyways.

Hey guys!

Thanks for the comments and suggestions. This began as a wifi team so I was limited in my movesets and pokemon. Hence the lack of poison heal gliscor (not enough dream world points yet) and no bug bite on Scizor becaause it's a gen 4 move tutor. When I adapt to the PO game, surely I will implement these changes, so thanks for the early help! I also recently made a Jellicent with the set AlphaWolf suggested and it seems to work nicely so thanks to him and all you who have agreed with his recommendation.

yeah you should definitely make use of jellicent water absorb ability to hit on the bulky water pkmn..anyway good job well done....
