Tournament ADPL 9 Commencement Thread

Hey managers, I’m mostly a new player but I’m also consistently near the top in the sv ou ladder. I don’t have much experience in tournaments and really want to try getting into the scene, but I also only started seriously playing mons this generation. I have 2 accounts on ladder right now: abGodc and dracula drip.

I’m also very open to learning new metas, and am sure I’ll understand them rather quickly.

Hope to be drafted and enjoy. A team tourney with y’all!

A note to managers, kindly consider new people who are promising in your eyes. This tour was created to give new people a chance and I’d hate it if it becomes one of those tours where new talent doesn’t get the chance it deserves. I am sure most of you all have your drafts decided but if any newbies interest you, do go for it. Always remember that giving a chance to someone can come a long way.

Good luck to all the new players hoping to be drafted this year and thank you Scoobs + Cala for hosting the tour. ADPL is a tour with a lot of history and i am glad it’s become a well known tour, thanks to all the efforts of the people who have been apart of the Academy community.

I strongly agree with this, you also have to consider the main reason why people sign up (e.g. Is it purely because there's a CA available?). For me, it's purely to keep developing myself in the competitive scene and to meet and play with different people, the CA is just a bonus. I feel I'm in a much stronger position than I was a year ago when ADPL 8 came out, but there's still lots for me to work on.

What I'm saying is that I'm sure there are loads of people with the same motivation and attitude as me, and I hope that these people are given a chance - there are several tours for 'top level' players to compete in, rather than ADPL.

I'm always getting in trouble being involved in this tour, last time I got almost banned for having issues with the hosts, this time I'm near rage not getting picked in the academy premier league as manager since I'm head of the academy which..you would think the head inviting and helping so many newer academy members would get a team surely, yet I'm still here signing up to play knowing that I'll get annoyed one more time, taking the tour seriously and planning to win it playing Oras. If you a new player reading this and trying to get picked or involved in this tournament or in any tournament this is a great stepping stone and I encourage you to sign up and show your interest to the managers of the tour. If you need more help with that and u dont know what to do in a team tournament environment like this, you can also send me privately on discord and I'll happily talk to you explaining how this works. Team tournaments are a great experience, u will meet alot of good people, some that u will enjoy talking to and others you might not, if you trynna have fun playing Pokemon, sign up!

I might be pissed that the head of the academy isn't picked to manage in its own tournament and that it's surely trainers academy tour at this point not academypl, yet the goal is still the same, get new people involved which is great, one of the only tours that allow that. Good luck to everyone!

every tour there is going to be "snubs". i dont think complaining about being snubbed is going to help anyone. does your's or anyones undraft mean another less known player was less worthy of being drafted? nowadays on smogon you have plenty of opportunities to shine through circuits, officals, even mushi leagues. if you weren't drafted you simply just didn't do enough to impress the managers. there is also quite a few players who are less experienced in the tournament scene that have been drafted to this tournament including my team. end of the day it's a competitive tournament just like a majority of team tournaments on this site, and the main goal is to win. and with how hard pressed you are within the budget to find good players, not everyone will be drafted.

This is more of an appropriate comment which I respect, rather than the other ones above.

"Chances to new players" is cope. Nothing about this format encourages drafting new players. Change the format or stop lying to yourselves.

Advice to undrafted and fellow less known players, consider offering your support to one of the teams, especially if your friend is on one of them and can vouch for you.

I've been in multiple team tours but also in many team cords for tours I went undrafted in. Just because I hit up my friend who is a manager or was drafted and offered support I get to be in a team enviroment, see how good players build teams, play test games and discuss actual games.

This will make you a better, more knowledgable player, which should be your goal for a teamtour anyway!

If you only signed up for a shiny avatar and see offering test games and teambuilding insight as a chore rather than as a way to improve then maybe your approach to the game is wrong.

Plus you can befriend potential future managers, smogon is a circlejerk and teamtours are a popularity contest to some extent so embrace it and use it to become a better player.

This is great advice, and I just want to emphasise the point I was making to avoid any misunderstandings about my original comment. Was the timing of my comment wrong, as it came across as salty? Yes. Did I sign up? Yes. However, I mentioned before the draft that this was not a great idea for newer players, despite the contrary, and I think having a Custom Avatar prize doesn't help this case. There were also apparently discussions that people disagreed with having a pool for undrafted players, so that also beats the purpose of this competition?

I agree with Cow that joining things like Mushi League (beginner tours where you get drafted and can play against great players) is a good starter, which I would strongly recommend. I also agree with yours about supporting team cords to still be involved in that environment, if it's not about the Custom Avatar (I've done this as well).

Again, to avoid any misunderstanding, I got undrafted last year and took it much more personally. I whined to Gypsy (me genuinely being salty), who gave me a reality check. What did I do? I took his advice, and kept grinding tours, and slowly, more people recognised what I've been doing and gave me the opportunity to play and manage.

I would recommend people to not focus on the Custom Avatar, but about the tournament. And that's why if you're a newer player, I want you to try these developmental leagues and forget this tour, until they fix this format of it being an 'Academy League'.

Apologies if I came across the wrong way, and good luck to everyone.

formats that are truly about development are the mushi leagues, where every single player gets drafted. i started playing there 3 seasons ago at 2 stars which is pretty much average and have been able to learn a ton about advanced. this tour is really just another team tour on smogon like any other, with the same players and the same managers. i think its not entirely fair to complain about people who are mad about not being drafted in this tour specifically because it really is advertised as a development league of sorts(credit where it is due i really like the undrafted player system) but in actual fact this is just gonna make people disappointed.
i think team tour culture on smogon has gotten ridiculous over the years and if i can offer some advice for whatever that is worth: *grind individual tours*
these are often going to have bo3 formats which are more competitive and if you lose youre only really disappointing yourself.
grind those, get some nice results and then eventually get into the team tours as a nice side thing to make friends and socialize
game is about getting better, competing and improving. not about tap dancing for managers to see if they like you for 30 team tours a year hoping for a shot

guys just remember, we are all human, we make mistakes, we have stress, there are many different factors possibly going on in one's life, and smogon may be at the back of their thoughts, something less important, whether you think that you should have been drafted but werent is one thing, but to blame these managers who are human like you and worked hard to get where they are today is different! we must remember we are all equal at the end of the day, and you never know what someone is truly going through ^-^ happy women's history month!, you also need to remember they were once you before, but now they worked hard and made it out, you shouldnt discredit any player
