Calm Mind (Smoochum) @ Leftovers
Ability: Oblivious
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Calm Mind
- Ice Beam
- Psychic
- Substitute

[SET COMMENTS]
Smoochum is an offensive threat as a Calm Mind sweeper with virtually perfect coverage combination of STAB Psychic and Ice Beam against the relevant metagame, though it struggles with its middling Speed, underwhelming defensive typing, and poor physical bulk. Defensive staples like Mightyena, Flying-types like Tropius and Noctowl, and Grass-types like Gloom and Lileep are threatened by Ice Beam. Psychic tears through bulky Water-types like Corsola and Wartortle, Poison-types like Ariados and Dustox, and Fire-types like Ponyta and Quilava. Substitute turns passive walls like Porygon lacking Return, Drowzee, and Delcatty with no STAB move into setup fodder for Smoochum in addition to blocking harmful status like Thunder Wave and Toxic. Smoochum's tendency to force switches and encourage opponents to sack Pokemon makes it adept at creating opportunities to set up Substitute, which gives it more freedom to use Calm Mind. Additionally, Substitute's protection against revenge killers like Aipom and Ponyta is massively appreciated by Smoochum.

Offense teams can get a lot of mileage out of Smoochum as a potent wallbreaker, and fast offensive threats like Aipom, Ponyta, and Volbeat can more efficiently clean up teams weakened by Smoochum. Special attackers like Quilava and Abra similarly appreciate the holes Smoochum can create. Balance teams benefit from the power Smoochum brings to the table to mitigate their overall passivity, and they can support Smoochum with bulkier teammates like Seaking, Rhyhorn, and Magnemite. Baton Pass users like Aipom and Volbeat can get Smoochum in with a potentially free switch, mitigating Smoochum's lack of bulk. Smoochum also preys on defensive Pokemon Aipom and Volbeat invite in, including Koffing and Rhyhorn. Slow Baton Pass users can particularly create opportunities for Smoochum to hit the field safely, so Ariados and Delcatty make excellent teammates for Smoochum.

Salac Berry can give Smoochum some legs to outrun fast revenge killers like Aipom and Ponyta so that it can sweep, but Smoochum is so frail that it struggles to find an easy point for setting up. Smoochum's physical bulk is so poor that Smoochum itself is easily finished off by Quick Attack users like Doduo, Ponyta, and Volbeat. Additionally, Abra tends to outclass Smoochum as a naturally faster specially offensive Psychic-type. Hidden Power Fire destroys Magnemite and opposing Smoochum, the only Pokemon to resist both of Smoochum's STAB moves, but Smoochum struggles to fit it over Calm Mind or Substitute.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Faster Physical Attackers**: Fast Normal-types like Aipom and Doduo, Volbeat, and Onix outspeed and OHKO Smoochum. Anorith has Rock Blast to break past Substitute.

**Fire-types**: Fire-types like Ponyta and Quilava outspeed Smoochum and OHKO it even after a Calm Mind boost.

**Bulky Normal-types**: Porygon, Delcatty, Castform, and even Noctowl can tank boosted attacks from Smoochum and hit it back with Normal-type moves to OHKO it. Porygon and Delcatty stand out as Smoochum checks for their reliable recovery, but both can be used as setup fodder if they lack a Normal-type attack.

**Bulky Water-types**: Seaking has the bulk to withstand a boosted Psychic from Smoochum and retaliate with Megahorn for an OHKO. Wartortle is bulky enough to tolerate a boosted attack, while Clamperl has good odds to OHKO a Smoochum attempting to survive its Surf by using Calm Mind, though Smoochum can overwhelm them.

**Magnemite**: Magnemite resists both of Smoochum's STAB moves and hits it back hard, but Smoochum does have a chance to overwhelm and 2HKO it if it switches in as Smoochum uses Calm Mind.

Defensive staples like Mightyena, Flying-types like Tropius and Noctowl, and Grass-types like Gloom and Lileep are threatened by Ice Beam. Psychic tears through bulky Pokemon like Corsola could probably sum this up as Water-types in general and mention either Seaking or Wartortle as well, Poison-types like Ariados and Dustox, and Ground-types like Rhyhorn and Cubone Ice Beam; while the topic is on breaking defensive mons, Psychic also notably slams Fire-types harder and limits them with their longevity ie Ponyta. Substitute turns passive walls like Porygon lacking Return, Drowzee, and Delcatty into setup fodder for Smoochum, in addition to blocking status like Thunder Wave or Toxic. Smoochum's tendency to force switches and encourage opponents to sack Pokemon make it adept at creating opportunities to set up Substitute, which gives it more freedom to use Calm Mind. Baton Pass users like Aipom and Volbeat can get Smoochum in with a potentially free switch, mitigating Smoochum's lack of physical bulk minor change and while true, can be broader since Smoochum lacks really any defensive utility/safe switch-ins barring MonoPsychic Noctowl/Dustox.

Sorry if this reads weird, but Smoochum mirror is another reason for HP Fire that can provide an edge.

**Faster Physical Attackers**: Fast Normal-types like Aipom and Doduo, Volbeat, and Onix outspeed and OHKO Smoochum. Anorith has Rock Blast to break past Substitute.

**Fire-types**: Ponyta, Quilava, and Magby all outspeed Smoochum and OHKO it even after a Calm Mind boost.

**Bulky Normal-types**: Porygon, Delcatty, Castform, and even Noctowl can tank boosted attacks from Smoochum and hit it back with Normal-type moves to OHKO it. Can either add a section regarding Magnemite, which can check Smoochum due to resisting both STABs and being able to hit back fairly hard.

Smoochum is a massive offensive threat as a Calm Mind sweeper with virtually perfect coverage combination of STAB Psychic and Ice Beam against the relevant metagame (kinda like i mentioned in the elekid write up, it's a lower ranked mon for a reason, maybe highlight why since it's pretty hyped up here despite how much it's actually used/ranked). Substitute turns passive walls like Porygon lacking Return, Drowzee, and Delcatty into setup fodder for Smoochum (how is delcatty setup fodder? dont they run bslam primarily? if you mean hp grass, which is lowkey bad, i would specify) in addition to blocking harmful status like Thunder Wave and Toxic. Smoochum's tendency to force switches and encourage opponents to sack Pokemon make it adept at creating opportunities to set up Substitute, which gives it more freedom to use Calm Mind.
