UU ADV UnderUsed

1779845731529.png

Glalie By AkmarMohamed
Introduction:

Howdy! ADV UU is one of the tiers that i have the most fun building and playing, so i was very excited to be able to play it both in UUPL and ADVPL. With a 4-3 score in UUPL, tied at first with heysup and crying, and a convincing season in ADVPL despite the insane ammount of hax that i had to deal with, i write this post to share with the community my teams. I took a building approach similar to what i do in OU, identifying weaknesses in common mons and sets, and trying to patch them with other teammates. Most of the teams are built around offensive synergies, and that made some of the commonly used mons weaker in my opinion, but others became very threatening.

The dump:

Notable thoughts:

1779842980577.png

My kang sets were very simple. STAB+FPunch+Rest+Flavor move was the set that i felt was able to fit on most teams. I truly think that mono kang is terrible and should never ever be brought to a game ever. Being unable to fpunch is an insane momentum loss in the early game, and makes it really hard to 1v1 opposing kang. I preffer a more breaky and impactful kang then something that most of the time uses wish to heal itself and ppstall more efficiently/ as cheap u turn. Kang can support any team with any role really, but i preffer to use it as a spdef. bulky breaker.

1779843404819.png

Arca is a great mon, but its not really easy to fit, in my opinion. It does a bunch of things but most of the time you dont really need them. Its a great water breaker, midground spammer breaker, priority user, fire absorber and physical check to many things. Overall great traits but i didnt find them needed in most situations. Basically all my arca teams had a mon that abuses waters being chipped or helps chip waters for arca (golem, sandslash, gligar, solrock, rain dancers).

1779843901769.png

As a spiker, glalie might be the best around. Having explosion, balanced stats and ice typing makes it really hard to OHKO, so leading glalie is not a bad idea at all. Some early game mons have to switch out of glalie, so you get early spikes really easily. This mon can play a lot slower then qwilfish too, which is a great deal. Omastar, however, beats glalie on offensive capabilities. This doesnt make glalie any worse, but it makes me feel like most omastar teams that dont take advantage of its offensive capabilities should be using something else, as omastar is not a reliable normal resist or physical check as it needs to lose hp early to spike. If its not spiking in order to kill something, its dying, and if its spiking, its not killing something, therefore failing at being a reliable physical check.

1779844359236.png
and
1779844395148.png

I avoided using the above pokémon in my builds, but for different reasons. Scyther was my most spammed mon before, and i was trying to avoid being counter teamed. I personally believe scyther is insanely strong, but its not impossible to build without it. It made me more relieved to be able to use scyther later in the tour without being cteamed. Ampharos, in the other hand, always felt out of place. It always felt like a much worse heal beller then all the other options. For offensive purposes, grandbull and lapras are way more appealing, and for defensive purposes i also believe that grandbull and altaria are better options. Being a grounded elec makes it really frail and it also has a huge 4mss, as you cant run focus punch and toxic together reasonably. I legitimally didnt find a single team i wanted to use amphy on, and i dont think i regret it. Really dissapointing mon.

1779844722938.png

Extremely under rated mon. Altaria is, in my opinion, the most reliable heal beller in the tier, and it completely blanks a LOT of threats, main one being arca. I had success with it in builds where it needs to support really toxic weak mons (cradily, walrein, hypno). I tried one dd rest set and felt it also was a great pokemon for such role in physical offense teams. Id say its worth giving a try if you havent.

1779845022009.png

Getting progress done with missy is really hard, due to its fragility and passivity. That being said, i think its a very useful mon in some teams, because it completely walls blastoise (very scary pokémon imo, rlly hard to deal with) and can spread para around. The cm set is basically impossible to justify because it doesnt do any damage even after 1-2 cms, but the twave pain split or mean look psong sets are very good. I enjoyed using it alongside mons that dont really pressure blastoise that much, and think its worth giving a try.

1779845271005.png

I think people rank top way too low for how much it covers in the builder. Its a great spinner, one of the best physical checks around, a great toxic spreader and can be either defensive and offensive. One of its best traits, however, is spinning on kang. I think this trait is crazy strong and needs to be valued in spikes weak teams. Versatile intimidate pivot that forces progress really easily, good stuff.

Thanks for reading my post! Hope i could inspire someone to build some teams and have fun in this tier. At the moment, ADV UU is my favorite tier and its a blast being able to have great games with the community. For any questions, feel free to tag or dm me :)

Hello, I wanted to share some thoughts on the UU + Sceptile format after managing UUFPL. I had never played UU before, but it seemed neat and my team ended up needing to slot players who had never touched ADV, so I did my best to learn the tier and support in the later weeks. Big shoutouts to Nick6564 for wanting to play this when nobody else did and mielke for running some test games despite not being in the tour.

Set options:

:rs/sceptile: :rs/sceptile: :rs/sceptile: :rs/sceptile: :rs/sceptile:
Early on, Sceptile was scary because of its Speed and set diversity:
  • Leech Seed is quite oppressive against a lot of old UU teams, especially with spikes. Beyond the combo obviously forcing damage, Leaf Blade does serious damage to most of the relevant spinners, and it can run Earthquake for Tentacruel. It'd usually just run HP Ice to hit opposing Grass types though.
    • Focus Punch instead of Leech Seed lets it blast through Kangaskhan and Cradily instead of slowly wearing things down. I could also see Toxic working, maybe even alongside Leech Seed.
  • Sub Petaya was another good set- it doesn't have great coverage, but Leaf+Ice hits everything except for Arcanine, Muk/Swalot, and Pinsir quite hard thanks to Overgrow. Thunder Punch as the 4th move lets it hit the last mons neutrally and do a little more to Tentacruel before reaching low HP. Endeavor 4th also works for dealing reliable damage to specially bulky mons.
  • SD suffers from low base Attack and no STAB, but Earthquake and Double-Edge are good moves. There were a few combinations of attacks that seemed decent between Earthquake, Double-Edge/Return, HP Flying/Ghost/Rock, and Brick Break. I preferred EQ+Flying+Dedge. That set comes close to 2HKOing everything at +2, so it can wallbreak at a minimum.
    • Jolly is usually best to cover Scyther and enemy Sceptile, but Adamant notably OHKOs Arcanine with +1 Earthquake, so offensive teams can try to sequence around that.
So we were trying to cover all of those somewhat and still lost to HP Water + Dragon Claw in the rain week 2 (nice team LBN)

Results:

As the tour went on, Sceptile wasn't really dominant and started seeing less usage as people got used to building/playing with it in mind. It has plenty of checks, and a few of its potential sets aren't very consistent. If you don't give it a free turn, it can struggle to accomplish much, so good positioning is important for both sides.

Notable mons in the meta that helped with Sceptile:

:rs/kangaskhan: :rs/arcanine: :rs/scyther:
The top dogs of regular ADV UU are still very good in Sceptile's world. None of these want to get hit by Leech Seed, but they can usually trade with and/or revenge kill it.

:rs/vileplume: :rs/cradily:
The other Grass types of UU are excellent dedicated checks due to their bulk and Leech Seed immunity. Vileplume has no trouble taking a +2 HP Flying or +1 HP Ice, and Sludge Bomb puts Sceptile in range of any priority. Cradily is more passive, but much harder to take down- requiring hax or the uncommon Focus Punch or SD Brick Break. It can also run Sludge Bomb over HP Rock if it wants to. I'm surprised we didn't see much of it.

:rs/lapras: :rs/walrein: :rs/tentacruel: :rs/slowking: :rs/golduck:
Besides the spikers and Swift Swim mons that just did their thing, Water types had a few winners compared to regular UU. The Water/Ice mons had good win rates and seemingly a bit higher usage than usual. Being able to threaten an OHKO on Sceptile's Sub/SD turn is pretty helpful for the slot. Tentacruel also threatens KOs, isn't weak to Grass, and has Liquid Ooze, though its stat spread and the threat of Earthquake hurt it a bit. Slowking and Golduck can take on Sceptile with Calm Mind (assuming Leaf Blade doesn't crit). Golduck got 3 wins from Tack loading one team that mielke made, which was pretty funny.

:rs/electrode: :rs/ninjask:
The only legal mons that naturally outspeed Sceptile naturally gained some value. Electrode is common enough already and I could see Band Ninjask working as a Scyther replacement on non-HO teams in this meta (in addition to its usual SD niche). There isn't much priority outside of Arcanine and Scyther, but Fearow and Hitmonlee are probably usable enough.

:rs/altaria: :rs/gligar: :rs/granbull: :rs/solrock:
Altaria and Gligar are good at stopping SD sets if necessary, though they take a million from HP Ice and thus require different Sceptile checks as teammates. Granbull also handles SD and doesn't have the Ice weakness. Solrock and the other Levitate mons can help if you know an SD Sceptile doesn't have HP Ghost.

:rs/swalot: :rs/pinsir: :rs/roselia:
Random mons with useful traits: Swalot is immune to Leech Seed and can survive a +2 Earthquake, then Sludge Bomb, Counter, or Explosion. It had mad usage in UUFPL because it was on several of the mielke teams that people were spamming early on. Pinsir resists Grass without being weak to Ice and threatens HP Bug while being scary for most Bug resists to switch into. Roselia is cope but lets stall teams beat Leech Seed Sceptile. I think it should use Sludge Bomb with a little Attack investment so it can break subs and still hit Waters.

Conclusion:

:rs/sceptile: :rs/scizor: :rs/crobat: :rs/swellow: :rs/kadabra:
I don't really know why Sceptile was legal for UUFPL or if it's being seriously considered for a drop, but it was interesting. None of its sets felt overpowered, though it does restrict teambuilding a bit. If the ADV low tiers overhaul never happens, I'd like to see something like the GSC UUPL to test it further. Releasing Scizor for another test would add another Sceptile answer and could allow other speed options like Crobat to be freed at the same time. Might be too much but it seems fun to try imo! Cool tier either way and I hope to play it more sometime. Thanks for reading!

So we were trying to cover all of those somewhat and still lost to HP Water + Dragon Claw in the rain week 2 (nice team LBN)

Might as well share my own thoughts eh? I'll be more crude since I'm in the mood to talk like a fucking dipshit rn so any particularly insightful takes will be dripped in bullshit like a pair of damn ribs. Alright lets do it.

You never forget your roots sometimes. Sometimes, you just feel like being a fucking moron when you wake up in the morning and that day was whenever I decided to load this dogshit. Not like I can really blame myself, it's not like Haunter didn't take a 180 degree nosedive in viability after people realized that Misdreavus was still better. So when I made my check to missy sniping it with Tox well this was going to be the end result. Any actual thought put in was the goofatron sitting in slot 5. I wanted something that could fuck with any flavor of sceptile BS, and Swalot was where I landed. Sludge Bomb, Encore, Liquid Ooze. This combination let's you take just about every Sceptile, and psure the spread eats a +2 EQ as well.

Gorebyss is a piece of shit fucking bastard that deserves so much more use than it gets. Good god this mon is horseshit and Electrode isn't too far off. I really loaded Sunny day RK9 and RD Gorebyss on the same team somebody blow my shit off my shoulders. As for the Sceptile, ngl the idea of curbstomping an RK9 into the sidewalk with HP Water in Rain was an idea too succulent the clipfarmer in me couldn't help but salivate over. Shit worked too. Loaded DClaw HP Water into RK9 Altaria yo I deserve a fuckin medal and a free pizza.

I wanted to spruce up my lead game this go around, and inspired by the paraspam misery ADV RU seems to be afflicted by, I went with lead Aggron. Seemed cute, neutral to good mu vs a decent amount of the common leads like RK9 and Glalie while immediately demonstrating to your opponent that your dick is bigger than theirs. Beyond that its not too special. It's just Aggron Paraspam what is that not good enough? This was another Win for a 2-1 record. Gee I wonder how long LBN will remain positive!?

I loaded the same shit in W4 and Tack shit ALLLL over me with SD Scyther. Dude popped HP Ground on my aggron and I saw the stairs to hell ascend behind me in my bedroom.

This was a bottom 1 game in history ngl. My poor fucking opponent got ADV'd so damn hard the fact he said gg after the game deserves a nobel prize. Queen and Omastar didn't even come out. I remember around a certain point in the game I just told myself Kangaskhan wouldn't get switched out. She would either die a painful death or it'd paralyze their entire lineup. And good lord did she put up a damn good fight. Tentacruel got bitched. Plume got bitched. Golem blew itself up. Aaaand then Scyther got the boost on Slowking. Poor bydy I'm sorry .

Honestly, there was minimal thought here. I felt the premonition of an incoming Slowking as if I'm ryomen sukuna calling a black flash and decided to whip out my secret weapon. ..Not very secret I used this guy in ADVPL but Shiftry isn't that bad. Or atleast, not that bad compared to where its actually ranked. I'm sorry a complete slowking stonewall combined with Omastar slaughtering aptitude and explosion is not a D rank Pokemon. That's next to Absol man cmon its not that bad. This team is one of my favorites I've made recently, so whipping it out a 2nd time was always on the menu. Thank god it went better than when i reused the aggron team :tymp:

This team was like, interesting. I wanted to use lead buzz and ToxTect Sceptile. Beyond that it was mostly filling the team out as usual. Unfortunately I wasn't predicted moral bankruptcy on the opposing side and got dunked upon by Attract Lapras. I can't act like I haven't looked at Attract before in a tier with the S ranker as a locked gender, but there's a reason I never pulled that trigger. The word is called empathy LMFAOOO. Ngl I ain't even mad about it, but it's more I legit can't think of fuck else to yap about in regards to the team or the game because thats all that mattered.

======================================================================================

As for Sceptile, at the start I considered that mon stupid. I still certainly do, but it did end up becoming really annoying to get to work after a bit, to where I mostly stopped bothering. I think its solid, and restricting to an extent, but it never really took a game over. Honestly I would even go far enough to say that it's probably fine? A solid A / A+ rank mon, but it could use a second mon introduced to really cement it as OK. UUFPL does this alot, and thus I propose the following trio for the next iteration of UUBL extravaganza.

sceptile.png.m.1706150269
crobat.png.m.1706150269
232.png

I think these three would be a perfect trio that somewhat check one-another. Sceptile goes without saying, adding another fast-end Pokemon to revenge petaya sets would go a long way to making it more palatable. Crobat I think would be fine. Really, this is a tier where if you don't load a rock type for Kangaskhan ur throwing the game, so its not like Sludge Bombs are going to go the distance in a way where it takes over games with choice band sets. Curse sets are terrible, and beyond that Crobat has no particular boosting option beyond sub liechi angles. I could see those being good. But I also think it'd be worth trying regardless.

Donphan is just Sandslash with a bigger pair in its pants I don't see this thing being crazy enough to be broken. I think it would just be another incredible spinner in 90% of cases, and just function as a side-grade to Golem in the ground role. It'd be worth trying in a tournament that didn't throw Weezing Scizor Venusaur in along side it, thus rendering the idea of loading choice band as white noise for the rest of the tournament.

Also can we get Cradily lower on the VR this mon sucks balls. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk. Have a tier list to go.

W post from scion and LBN shout big qwilys above take my thoughts w a grain of salt but had some thoughts on the meta from uufpl based on what i saw in the builder.

kangaskhan is honestly prolly banworthy ts was very warping to build w/ / play against it felt like every team i made w/o a kang on it was just a pile of garbage reference of what my builder looked like after this post if u can tell legit every team was kang except 1 and the.1 that wasnt we ran one test and immediately knew it was ass. idk if tier changes r possible but this guy should be considered to be moved up / a tester w/o kang would be v interesting to see IMO. wish rest enables whole new playstyle physdef spdef offensive broken blah blah blah u ardy know.
Screenshot 2026-07-07 at 8.33.00 PM.png

scep rly wasnt all that bad its like kinda warping in the builder but like u should be having an arc / scyther etc. in the builder anyways and that + kang + not playing like a bot should be enough to deal w/ scep. if u load a team pre scep meta sure ur gonna get farmed but otherwise ur prolly fine just make sure ur mons r not complete fodder to it bc odds are first time it comes out its not attacking u it gets insane power boost from sd / getting a sub leech off that it just doesnt rly have if u hit it the first time its out

rk9 was rly good almost as good as kang definitely the 2nd best mon in the tier u could run it like 20 different variations of the same set and all of em r good off the top of my head 4 attacks special mixed band phys sub toxic rest sunny day bulky roar r all viable depending on the circumstance and this guy can have like every hp run viably so u rly dk what its gonna do, def good for the tier tho to have

all the waters: i have played few real smog metas but it felt like every 2nd mon in this tier was a water. most of em r good i think the best r omastar slowking lapras and lanturn the others r good but those guys were my prefs to try and build around each added a piece that allowed u to deal with the opposing water swapping in in some fashion guys like walrein tenta qwil r also good bc of setup / spike threat on swap but have less overall utility into the overall meta like oma just clears qwil bc u res the kang hit coming in and can spike on the swap whereas qwil just dies to offensive slam into eq

vileplume: sleeper beast of the meta this guy honestly felt super super good to build w/ and basically had no bad mus if u go sd version u beat kang if u go fast with coverage u jump the waters and can 2 shot some of em it gets aroma asw which helps u smash paraspam teams and its bulk is rly good and flexible into a buncha guys + super thanos into sceptile

fast guys: trode is cool boom cancelling opp move is definitely rly good this guy prolly underrated a bit, scyther is good didnt feel overly impactful but almost every team i built had an oma and physdef kang / rk9 so thats prolly why. ninjask is scyther but ur team is giga scep weak and need a revenger
psychics: felt like the other underrated defining part of this tier to me, there being basically no real resists meant you can always run mono psychic and really not feel that bad, any of the psychics in the builder that are spec felt solid to build with except lunatone he a fraud lol

these r the only notable things i wanted to talk about otherwise scion and lbn do much better w/ their posts ty for adding scep u should prolly keep him he wasnt rly that broken and felt fine to build with and against. sd kinda bum but not really sub leech broken as balls the sub endeavor stuff is noob bait and anything else ur prolly just trolling on main

if u r new to adv uu reading this and do not know what u r doing go stick a kang arc 2 waters a phys guy and then anything in the last slot and the team is like prolly playable just make sure u can break kang no matter what dc how troll it seems if u cant break kang u cant play the game then u need a dog resist and then u also need a guy to swap into waters if u have those 3 checked ur team will at least be somewhat playable

Also played scept meta, it was kinda ballz compared to regular adv uu ngl everyone was just spamming shit that lost to random sweepers into me so i went like 5-1 while completely checked out and mostly using some teams mielke tossed me at the start of the season, sceptile is probably too constricting on whats usable to be worth considering genuinely freeing it, subseed thats faster than literally everything other than ninjask and trode existing kinda completely rewrites the tier and it rly wasnt fun to theorycraft past wk1, that last bit might be my general burnout talking though

Saw freaking ADV UU show up on recent for forums, and got kinda inspired to make my own UUFPL post/dump/ramble. Haven't built/played ADV UU since like 2016 so this tour was a fun chance to play a format I used to enjoy quite a bit! Built my teams each week, s/o Hydronics for feedback and haxlolo for test games

If a meta has changed a bit and you haven't built in a while, just bring some spikes HO BS and it'll probably work out. That was my theme this week + I wanted to feature my dawg HaunterBoy28 early before shit got real (it never did). And because its HaunterBoy28, he rolled a great MU and proceeded to be the MVP for the week before promptly being benched for the rest of the season. Sometimes, LARP and reality blend together well :quagchamppogsire:

:omastar: :vileplume: :arcanine: :kangaskhan: :Misdreavus: :Solrock:

Scout looked pretty CB solrock-able so went for BO para spam team w/spikes support where Solrock could just say "Pick one" every time it enters the field. Vileplume ended up stealing the show tho, that mon is not ok

:Ampharos: :Kangaskhan: :Sceptile: :Glalie: :Arcanine: :Gorebyss:

Built around Gorebyss endgame sweep, Sceptile did his best EndeavPert impression tho and cleared the way for the cheap fish

:Nidoking: :Granbull: :Scyther: :Lanturn: :Kangaskhan: :Arcanine:

Wanted to try out Nidoking even though I think its mid and it performed about as expected. Lost to some hax on Scyther at the end but its chill cus I had just haxxed Leroi in SV OU like 15 min before this

:Granbull: :Lanturn: :Kangaskhan: :omastar: :Arcanine: :Meganium:

Watched a couple replays, noticed CB bull lead could go insane cus no one is loading ghosts, and it went insane indeed. Shell Armour Omastar was to avoid getting crit by Arca crunch, all according to plan

:Solrock: :Granbull: :Kangaskhan: :Tentacruel: :Glalie: :Electrode:

Wanted as many round mons as possible to celebrate WC2026 while still actively trying to win the game and this was what I ended up with. Glalie prob best spiker in this tier, Granbull is really not ok, and had some generous rng so Trode never ended up coming out for clean up

W7 (L)
:Arcanine: :Kangaskhan: :Banette: :Sceptile: :Glalie: :Lapras:

I really wanted to use Banette at some point so gave it a try this week. Had some early misplays, recovered thru midgame, lost endgame to b2b FB misses which was long overdue since my FBs had been hitting a bit too consistently this tour

Sceptile feels like an A rank mon, SD is fine on HO, sub endeav petaya is nice if ur pairing it with something that benefits from kang/cruel getting removed, never ran Leech but obvs can do work as well. Its speed tier is really nice and u dont really gotta invest in max speed, just never be slower than 341 and ur fine. If it dropped into UU fr I think it'd be fine.

Some things never change, Kang still king of this format and its not really close. Sp.def w/normal and another attk of ur choice (don't use Shadow ball) was pretty much a staple every week. Has enough flexibility to tech specific shit as well, its the glue that holds this tier together

Last time I played this, Arcanine was UUBL so this was my first go around with Big Dawg. Really nice mon, stuck to basic ass sets this whole tour but if it ain't broke don't fix it. Intim/espeed/FB/status/HPs backed by nice stats, pretty straightforward 2nd best mon in tier but its def a gap between it and Kanga cus u can drop this guy w/o suffering too heavily for in the builder

Granbull top 5, felt like Lebron everytime I used it. CB really forces ur opponent to show their hand early, Bulk Up is scary af, and still has nice utility options in heal bell and such. Top 5 mon IMO, really takes advantage of ghosts not being all that in this tier

Will probably edit in a tier list at some point but i'm tired of typing now. Really enjoyed this tour, ggs to everyone I played against, freaking adv UU + Sceptile man
