Aerodactyl positions itself mainly as a Snorlax counter. By resisting both normal attacks and being immune to Earthquake, Aerodactly walls all snorlax sets unless they carry Ice Beam or Blizzard. Secondarily, Aerodactyl also walls Rest/Fire Blast Tauros, Rock Slideless Rhydon, Surf/Blizzardless Dragonite, Dragonair, obscure attackers like pinsir. Finally, like any other physical attacker, has a decent matchup vs chansey.
Typical Aerodactyl moves include Double-edge for damage, Hyper Beam, Rest, Toxic, Fire Blast and Agility.
The standard naive set consists of an aggresive aerodactly with damaging moves like double-edge, hyperbeam, and Agility to bypass paralysis. The fourth move would be split between Fire Blast for a burn chance, and Sky Attack for longevity.
- Double Edge
- Hyper Beam
- Agility
- Sky Attack/Fire Blast
However a more defensive Aerodactyl can use rest for longevity, and rely on Toxic for damage and status spreading. Fire Blast can be used to counter rest users with a high surprise element. The combo works in the following order: Aerodactyl Toxic, Opponent Rest, Opponent wakes up, Aerodactyl stalls, Aerodactyl Burns with Fireblast, Opponent dies.
This combo exploits a bug where the badly poison damage is shared with burn (and leech seed), but reapplying toxic resets the counter. Since applying burn does not reset the counter, burn applies damage equivalent to the amount of turns that passed since the last toxic was applied (before rest) multiplied by 1/16th. This forces the enemy to risk a burn, a double edge or another toxic upon switchout. While players unaware of the bug may simply misplay by staying in after a rest.
Finally, weaker moves like Bite, Wing Attack, Take down, allow Aerodactyl to gain a pp advantage while stalling, while still dealing damage.
-Rest
-Toxic
-Fire Blast
- Double-Edge/Bite/Wing-Attack/Take Down
Counter Play
Like with any toxic user, switching out is a possible counter play, as it resets the bad poison to regular poison.
Synergy
Aerodactyl plays well with Wrap teams, as they appreciate even regular poison, especially against slower tankier pokemon like Rhydon, Snorlax, Cloyster, Exeggutor and Chansey
