ALBUMZ 2OO8

Really looking forward to Pendulum's next album. Their first album is just about the only drum and bass I can stand to listen to outside of a club/ party scene.

I'm looking forward to Weezer's new album, despite Make Believe sucking something major. And it's got to be better than Cuomo's solo tapes that he decided to release.

People In Planes are apparently working on another one that's set for May this year. *Thumbs up*

And a big middle finger to Cooper Temple Clause for declaring that they were planning to record an album this year, then taking it back and splitting up. You broke my heart. Dicks.

I found Fortress and obZen good at first, but they become tiring. Except for Combustion, that song is great.

I hope to god the new Opeth isn't a further drop into sellout territory :-(
From some interview I've read with Mikael Akerfeldt, it seems as if it's supposed to be more "energetic".

Ghost Reveries isn't even close to being a sellout. Apparently the new album is darker, more avant-garde and just heavier. I really doubt Opeth are ever going to "sell out". Getting more commercial attention when your music is good isn't a bad thing.

GR is their cheesiest release though. I haven't heard the more heavy/avant-garde part about Watershed... the "energetic" part got me a bit worried, I don't think Opeth would mix well with that.

Well, there are some synths on Beneath the Mire that don't belong there but other than that, is it cheesy because the lyrics are pseudo-occult? Even though the GR lyrics aren't my favourite of Opeth's (those are unquestionably Still Life's), it's much, much better than almost anything else out there that isn't Daniel Gildenlow.

I'd love to see your back up your claims that Ghost Reveries was a sellout album. It's simply a combination of all their previous styles, which works very well. It may not bring anything new to the table but it is certainly no more mainstream than any of their other work. Do you understand what the term sell out even means?

And before you even mention Roadrunner Records: You're wrong.

They are obviously running out of ideas. Deliverance, Damnation and Ghost Reveries have all gotten worse than their previous works. Fuck, even if they just rehashed My Arms, Your Hearse or Blackwater Park, it would still suck. There is no "progression" with Ghost Reveries except adding keyboards, and that was probably the worst thing to happen to that album.

They are extremely well-known in the metal community. Opeth certainly aren't radio material, but they are more "mainstream" than ever. That is probably because GR was more proggy and accessible (and cheesy) than any of their other works.

ps: I never said that they were sellouts. I would call In Flames sellouts, but not Opeth. I only said that I didn't want to see Watershed degenerate any further, into possibly "caring more about money than music" territory.

My favorite release of 2008 so far is probably Genghis Tron - Board Up the House. Also new Protest the Hero, The Loved Ones and Gaslight Anthem are good too. I just downloaded new Murder by Death and it's pretty good so far.

I'm excited for new Fall of Troy (I'm pretty sure their split with The Number Twelve Looks like you is supposed to come out later this year), Lightning Bolt, Wintersun and Portugal. The Man.

new suicidal tendencies? wow

That's pretty much what I said.

There's a new Testament album coming out too, with virtually the classic lineup (no Louie on drums though, Paul Bostaph is doing the drum work.. good thing too).

Damnation is a brilliant album. Deliverance is meh, but it has the title track. Ghost Reveries isn't their best, but meh. And they've had keys since Blackwater Park, it's just that this album added a permanent keyboardist. And you can't argue with Ghost of Perdition or The Grand Conjuration.

So according to you, the next album should be made out of mozzarella? ?_?

Opeth have never done that.

the cheese has been pretty restrained in the past. I don't cringe when I hear BWP or MAYH. also it's ironic that you mention The Grand Conjuration, that song is imo, Opeth's worst.

Because of a kickass ascending/descending riff? Maybe you don't like the organ/mellotron sound, that's possible though.

Hm, I'm still wondering how Barlow's return to Iced Earth is going to work out. Shaffer's song writing seems to get exponentially worse with every album they record; but Barlow is such an energetic power house he can make up for bad song writing (Something Wicked kind of proved that).

Blind Guardian's orchestral album sounds interesting; though whether or not it comes out this year or at a much later day remains to be seen.

Warrel Dane has his solo album with collaboration from one of Soilwork's guitarists; could be good, could be very bad.

There are a lot of big ifs this year. Though Middian's follow up- and you know there's going to be a follow-up considering how prolific Mike Scheidt is- should be interesting.

Okay, so, Millencolin's new album, Machine 15, was leaked a while ago and I was not informed of it. So yesterday while browsing last.fm I noticed new songs in their profile and was like 'shit, new album, awesome'. I downloaded it straight away because I obviously can't buy it yet (release date 6th or 7th of April) and what a disappointment!

Millencolin was the best skate-punk band I knew on their previous albums but Machine 15 lowered their points quite a lot. This new pop-punk shit they've done brings tears to my eyes and I managed to find one decent song on the whole album.

I definitely have higher hopes for the rest of the albums I'm anticipating for this year. Sucks if they suck as much as Machine 15.
