nature: Calm
evs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
[SET COMMENTS]
Ampharosite Clefable is a good pick for balance teams as it compresses several important roles and performs well as a support Pokemon. Acquiring Mold Breaker upon Mega Evolving allows it to set Stealth Rock reliably as well as maintain them versus several common defoggers, such as Sablenite Mandibuzz and Manectite Mew. Magic Guard before Mega Evolving and access to Heal Bell alleviate the burden that Status places on balance staples, including Clefable itself. As such, Clefable offers fantastic support to fellow defensive Pokemon like Sablenite Corviknight and Hippowdon and Manectite Mew, who are susceptible to being worn down by Status. With a good defensive typing in Fairy/Dragon post Mega Evolution, Clefable can put its decent defensive stats to good use against several common threats. Namely, the above set aims to reliably counter Hydreigon and Dragapult. When using Clefable, sometimes it can be wise to withhold from Mega Evolving immediately, particularly when the increased vulnerability to Ice-type and Fairy-type attacks and to Status can be a problem.
Clefable is directly threatened by several common threats in Arcanine, Iron Head Corviknight, Mamoswine, Excadrill, Necrozma-Dusk Mane, and Kyurem. It can easily lose momentum, risks being used as set-up bait by several of these Pokemon, and is denied Stealth Rock by Corviknight and Excadrill.
Pairing Clefable with Banettite Toxapex resolves its vulnerability to Arcanine and provides a way to neuter set-up attempts via Prankster Haze. Latiasite Toxapex is an alternative that foregoes this last perk but solidly counters Excadrill and Mamoswine. In return, Clefable faces threats to Toxapex in Electric-Type attackers and Hydreigon. Bulk Up Corviknight appreciates Clefable checking Zekrom while providing Heal Bell support; in return, Corviknight checks Excadrill and Necrozma Dusk Mane. The core is still threatened by Altarianite Arcanine as well as Kyurem. Manectite Mew enjoys cleric support and Hydreigon being countered, and covers several threatening physical attackers like Arcanine, Mamoswine, Necrozma-DM, Terrakion, and Excadrill. Despite its strengths, this core is vulnerable to Kyurem. Sablenite Gastrodon is a more niche option that checks some key threats to Clefable in Arcanine and Excadrill.
As for offensive partners, Pinsirite Arcanine has a good match-up versus Altarianite Arcanine, Mamoswine, Excadrill, and Necrozma-Dusk Mane, and it capitalizes on Clefable countering Electric types and bulky Water types.
